What Your Cursor Agent Should Do After the MVP Launch

After an MVP ships, your Cursor agent should not immediately build a larger feature set. Put it into a measured production loop: observe real usage, choose one high-impact problem, plan a small reversible change, implement it on a branch, run the right checks, review the diff, release safely, and record what happened. Repeat that loop until reliability, security, data correctness, and user adoption are strong enough to justify broader expansion.

The first post-MVP job is learning, not expansion

An MVP proves that a complete path can work under controlled conditions. Production reveals whether people can discover that path, finish it, trust its output, and use it repeatedly. Your agent’s next assignment should therefore be tied to evidence from actual users and systems rather than an unranked wishlist.

Collect a small, decision-ready set of signals:

  • User interviews, support requests, and failed task reports.
  • Activation, retention, and task-completion rates.
  • Error frequency, latency, infrastructure cost, and failed background jobs.
  • Security alerts, data-integrity checks, and rollback incidents.

Turn those observations into one measurable problem. “Improve onboarding” is too broad; “Increase the percentage of new users who complete the first import from 42% to 60% without increasing support contacts” gives an agent and a reviewer a testable target.

Choose the next task with an explicit ranking method

Compare stabilization, a new feature, onboarding work, and cost optimization using the same criteria. A useful scorecard asks:

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Criterion Question to answer Why it matters
Customer impact How many users encounter the problem, and how valuable is the affected workflow? Prevents a loud request from outweighing a widespread failure.
Failure severity Could the issue cause a security incident, data loss, incorrect billing, or blocked work? High-severity risks normally outrank cosmetic improvements.
Evidence confidence Do logs, interviews, and reproducible cases point to the same cause? Strong evidence reduces the chance of optimizing the wrong problem.
Reversibility Can the change be disabled, rolled back, or migrated back safely? Reversible work lets the team learn without taking on unnecessary exposure.
Time to learn How soon will a release show whether the hypothesis is correct? Short feedback cycles are especially valuable immediately after launch.
Implementation effort What code, data, testing, and operational work is required? Supports a realistic choice when several opportunities have similar impact.

A security flaw, data-loss path, or reliability problem that blocks learning should normally come before a visual refinement or broad feature. If the evidence is weak, select the smallest instrumented change that will improve your understanding rather than committing to a large build.

Ask Cursor for a plan before asking it to edit

For a multi-step task, start with repository inspection and a written plan. Cursor’s documented planning workflow can create automatic to-do items and track dependencies for complex work. Require the plan to contain:

  • The user problem and measurable success metric.
  • Current behavior, suspected cause, and assumptions that still need verification.
  • Files, services, schemas, and configuration likely to change.
  • Acceptance criteria, including unchanged behavior that must be preserved.
  • Unit, integration, end-to-end, security, migration, and performance checks appropriate to the change.
  • Data migration, feature-flag, deployment, and rollback notes.
  • Open questions that need a human decision before implementation.

Do not accept a plan that merely lists files. Ask the agent to explain dependencies and identify the smallest coherent slice. A plan for an import reliability fix might separate input validation, retry behavior, observability, tests, and rollout rather than mixing them into one opaque edit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical planning prompt

Inspect the repository without editing it. For the production issue described below, produce a dependency-ordered plan. Include the current behavior, likely failure points, files and services involved, assumptions to verify, acceptance criteria, tests, migration and rollback steps, and a staged release plan. Preserve all existing behavior outside this issue. Stop and ask questions where the repository does not establish an answer.

Give the agent the evidence you collected, such as an anonymized error, a failing request, or a support example. That keeps the plan anchored to a real problem instead of letting the agent invent scope.

Implement one bounded change on a branch

Once the plan is approved, create an isolated branch and give the agent a narrow outcome. Cursor’s Agent mode is documented as able to search a codebase, edit multiple files, run terminal commands, write tests, and fix errors. Those capabilities are useful only when the task has clear boundaries.

  1. State the contract. Describe the user-visible result, input and output expectations, compatibility requirements, and the metric that should move.
  2. Set scope limits. Name directories or services that may change and explicitly prohibit unrelated refactors, dependency upgrades, or redesigns.
  3. Require assumptions in writing. The agent should list decisions it made and distinguish repository facts from guesses.
  4. Preserve a reviewable diff. Ask for small commits or a clearly explained diff, with generated files and formatting-only changes separated where possible.
  5. Make tests part of the implementation. A production fix without a regression test leaves the next agent to rediscover the failure.

Have the agent show the diff and explain any behavior change before merging. If the patch expands beyond the agreed slice, stop and split the work rather than letting scope creep hide inside an apparently successful run.

Verify the change at the level of risk

“Tests pass” is not a universal release decision. Match verification to what changed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Unit tests: boundary conditions, validation, parsing, and deterministic business rules.
  • Integration tests: database transactions, queues, external services, authentication, and permissions.
  • End-to-end tests: the user journey represented by the success metric.
  • Security checks: authorization, secret handling, input abuse, and sensitive-data exposure.
  • Migration checks: forward and backward compatibility, partial-failure behavior, and restore procedures.
  • Performance checks: latency, throughput, queue depth, and resource cost when the change affects scale.

Ask Cursor to reproduce the original failure, identify the root cause, make the change, and rerun the relevant checks. The agent should report commands, results, and any checks it could not run. A green test suite does not prove that a migration is reversible or that production configuration matches the test environment.

Verification handoff

Run the checks required by the approved plan. Reproduce the original failure first when possible. After editing, rerun focused tests and then the broader suite relevant to this service. Report each command, pass or fail result, skipped check, remaining risk, and the exact files changed. Do not declare success when a required check was unavailable.

Review, release, and keep rollback ready

Human review remains the decision point. Inspect the implementation, generated tests, data access, logging, error handling, and configuration—not just whether the diff is small. Confirm that the code actually measures the success metric and does not create a new privacy, security, or cost problem.

Release in a way that limits blast radius:

  1. Deploy to a preview or staging environment that resembles production.
  2. Exercise the critical path and rollback procedure there.
  3. Use a feature flag, canary, or similarly narrow exposure when the system supports it.
  4. Define the observation window and thresholds for errors, latency, task completion, and cost.
  5. Promote only if the signals remain within those thresholds; otherwise disable or revert.

Keep the previous version deployable until the new path has proved itself. For data changes, preserve backups and document the exact recovery sequence before production deployment. A reversible release is not merely a Git revert: it also includes compatible schemas, safe configuration changes, and a way to undo queued or persisted effects.

Connect Cursor to the workflow around the code

An agent becomes more useful when it can work with the systems that contain product context and release evidence. Cursor’s documented workflow connections include GitHub, GitLab, Azure DevOps, Bitbucket, Slack, and Linear. Use those connections to bring an issue, pull request, discussion, and deployment status into one auditable flow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep permissions narrow. A useful setup lets the agent read the issue and repository, propose a patch, and report checks while a human retains merge and production-release authority. Copying a ticket into chat without linking the acceptance criteria or prior decisions makes context disappear between iterations.

Use multiple agents only when boundaries are clear

Delegation helps when work is genuinely separable. Good candidates include independent research, test generation, migration review, documentation, or a UI task with a defined interface. Give each subagent an explicit output and prevent overlapping edits.

Cursor’s official Subagents documentation says specialized assistants can be delegated work and, since Cursor 2.5, can launch child subagents. Treat that as a decomposition tool, not permission to multiply uncontrolled changes. One owner should integrate the outputs, resolve contradictions, run the complete checks, and review the final diff.

Background Agents require extra controls

Background Agents are intended for asynchronous repository work. Cursor’s Background Agents API documentation describes programmatic creation and management of autonomous coding agents, and labels the API beta. It documents GitHub repository integration, follow-up prompts, and a capacity of up to 256 active agents per API key. That capacity is an API limit, not a recommended team size or evidence of product success.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before using an asynchronous agent, record who owns the branch, what files it may change, how secrets and production data are excluded, which checks are mandatory, and who reviews the result. Never merge an unattended patch merely because the agent reports completion.

Keep a decision log and a ranked backlog

Chat history is not durable product context. After each release, write a short decision record containing:

  • The observed problem and evidence used to prioritize it.
  • The hypothesis, chosen change, and alternatives rejected.
  • Acceptance criteria and the measured result.
  • Unexpected effects, follow-up risks, and rollback status.
  • Links or identifiers for the branch, pull request, deployment, and monitoring view.

Update project rules and technical documentation when the release changes conventions, APIs, data contracts, or operational procedures. Convert unfinished ideas into a ranked backlog with evidence and a next validation step. The next Cursor agent should be able to understand why a decision was made without reconstructing it from old prompts.

A repeatable post-MVP operating loop

  1. Observe: gather user feedback, adoption data, failures, latency, cost, and task-completion evidence.
  2. Rank: compare impact, severity, confidence, reversibility, learning speed, and effort.
  3. Plan: inspect the repository and produce dependencies, acceptance criteria, tests, and rollback notes.
  4. Implement: make one bounded change on a branch and preserve unrelated behavior.
  5. Verify: reproduce the problem and run risk-appropriate automated checks.
  6. Review and release: inspect the diff, use controlled exposure, monitor outcomes, and retain rollback capability.
  7. Learn: record the result, update documentation and rules, and feed the next ranked problem into the loop.

This sequence answers the common post-MVP dilemma. Add a feature when evidence shows it is the best next learning opportunity and the foundation is safe. Write tests when an important path is unprotected or a regression would be costly. Fix reliability, security, or data correctness first when those failures can harm users or make every later measurement untrustworthy.
