To watch a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, you need an Ultra HD Blu-ray player, an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc, a compatible display, and an HDMI connection. To get 4K and HDR rather than a lower-resolution or SDR picture, the display’s chosen HDMI input—and any receiver or soundbar the video passes through—must support the signal formats you want. A receiver, soundbar, and surround speakers are optional.
What equipment is required?
- An Ultra HD Blu-ray player: The player must explicitly support Ultra HD Blu-ray. A regular Blu-ray player is not automatically a 4K disc player. Sony’s UBP-X700U product page identifies that model as a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player and notes that 4K output requires a compatible display and HDMI cable: Sony UBP-X700U.
- An Ultra HD Blu-ray disc: Check the individual title’s specifications if you want a particular resolution or HDR format; features vary by disc.
- A display and HDMI connection: Connect the player to a TV or projector by HDMI, either directly or through compatible audio equipment. The display needs a 4K-capable HDMI input for 4K presentation. Its capabilities can vary by port, so check the manual for the exact input you plan to use.
For ordinary playback, a receiver and surround-sound system are not prerequisites: the player can connect to the TV. The picture you get depends on the capabilities of the player, disc, display, and signal path.

What does a setup need for 4K and HDR?
Check the particular HDMI input, not just the TV’s headline specifications. Panasonic’s North American connection guidance says the HDMI terminal used for Ultra HD Blu-ray 4K/HDR viewing must support HDCP 2.2, 4K/60p (4:4:4), and HDR signals meeting Ultra HD Blu-ray standards. Confirm the requirements for your equipment in its manual: Panasonic connection guidance.
The HDMI cable must also be suitable for the signal you intend to send. Sony recommends an 18 Gbps-capable 4K HDMI cable or a Premium High Speed HDMI cable for the applicable player context; Panasonic specifies 18 Gbps for 4K/60p. See Sony’s HDMI guidance and Panasonic’s connection guidance. These recommendations do not establish that HDMI 2.1 is required for every 4K Blu-ray setup; match the cable and ports to the output and formats your system needs.

4K and HDR are separate checks. A display may accept 4K without supporting HDR, and HDR format support can differ between the disc, player, and display. Sony notes that in its documented scenario an HDR source can be adjusted to SDR according to the TV type. That can allow viewing on a non-HDR television, but it does not provide an HDR presentation.
What changes if you want Dolby Vision?
Dolby Vision requires compatible content, a compatible player, and a compatible TV. If video passes through a receiver or soundbar, that device must also support Dolby Vision for the signal path. Sony’s instructions for the UBP-X700 describe enabling Dolby Vision output and warn that a compatible TV port may be specific to that model’s setup. Follow the manuals for your own devices rather than assuming the same menu names or port behavior: Sony’s UBP-X700 Dolby Vision setup instructions.

Should you connect the player through a receiver or soundbar?
Use a direct player-to-TV HDMI connection for the simplest setup. Add a receiver or soundbar if you want its audio features, but verify that it passes through the video format you intend to use. For Dolby Vision, the intermediary must be compatible if the player’s video signal travels through it. Panasonic describes HDMI audio output to an audio system; the video pass-through requirements depend on the formats and models involved.

Setup and troubleshooting order
- Confirm the disc and player. Make sure the disc is Ultra HD Blu-ray and the player explicitly supports that format.
- Connect directly to the TV. Use a suitable HDMI cable and connect to the TV input documented for the required 4K/HDR features. A direct connection helps isolate problems before adding audio equipment.
- Check the signal path. If you reconnect through a receiver or soundbar, verify its pass-through support for the intended format; check Dolby Vision compatibility when applicable.
- Review device settings. Check the player and TV manuals for 4K/HDR output and enhanced HDMI input settings. Sony’s UBP-X700 instructions cite “Enhanced Format” for its described setup, but menu names and options differ across models.
- If HDR is missing, check format support at both ends. Confirm the disc’s HDR format and the TV’s support, as well as the chosen input and any intermediary. A non-HDR TV may receive adjusted SDR output in Sony’s documented scenario, but will not show HDR.
