If a Google Gemini Gem is ignoring your instructions, first confirm you’re chatting with the right Gem, then review and save its instructions, test one behavior in the preview, and check any relevant Knowledge files. These checks follow Google’s documented workflow, but Google does not identify a guaranteed fix or a single cause for every case.
1. Confirm you selected the intended Gem
A Gem’s instructions apply when you use that Gem in a chat. In the Gemini web app, open the sidebar, select Gems, then choose the intended Gem under My Gems before sending your prompt. A regular Gemini chat or a different Gem may not have the instructions you expect.

2. Review and save the instructions
Open the Gem for editing and check whether its role and desired behavior are clear and specific. Google recommends supplying relevant context and style guidance; a broad request can leave room for answers that differ from what you intended. Save your edits before testing.

The editor can also use Gemini to rewrite instructions. Treat the result as a draft: inspect it for missing requirements or wording that changes your intent, then edit and save as needed. Rewriting is an editing aid, not a promise of exact compliance. Google’s Gems tips article quotes product lead Deven Tokuno explaining that users can copy some premade Gems and rewrite or add to their pre-filled instructions.
3. Test one behavior in the preview
Use the Gem editor’s preview pane to try a short prompt that tests one important instruction at a time. For example, if the Gem is supposed to answer in a particular format, test that format without adding several unrelated requests. Change one instruction at a time and compare the preview response; this makes it easier to see whether an edit appears to help.

Testing a single behavior at a time is a practical troubleshooting method, not a guarantee from Google. The preview lets you try prompts and adjust instructions, but it cannot establish that every future chat will follow them exactly.

4. Check the Gem’s Knowledge files
If the Gem’s behavior depends on a reference document, open its Knowledge section and confirm that the relevant file is attached. You can edit the Gem to add or remove files. Google says a Drive file uses its most recent version and changes to that file are reflected in the Gem.

For a Google Drive source, Google’s instructions say Keep Activity must be on and Workspace must be connected. See the Google guide to using Gems on a computer for the documented file and account requirements.
5. If the Gem still ignores an instruction
Google’s published guidance explains how to create, preview, edit, and use Gems, but it does not provide a cause-specific diagnosis or guarantee a remedy when a Gem continues to disregard instructions. A persistent failure does not, by itself, show whether the issue is the selected Gem, its wording, a Knowledge file, or something else.

Do not assume that clearing chat history, changing subscriptions, or rewriting the prompt will fix the problem: the official guidance cited here does not establish those as remedies. If you report the issue, include the Gem’s instructions, the prompt you tested, and what response differed from the requested behavior; these details describe the symptom without claiming an unverified cause.

Google Workspace Help says Skills are being introduced as a modular method for custom AI instructions and are scheduled to replace Gems in 2027. Its page, last updated September 30, 2026, says the Gemini app Skills rollout is scheduled to begin October 13, 2026, Gems are scheduled to move to Settings on November 17, 2026, and the earliest discontinuation dates are no sooner than March 1, 2027 for business and enterprise and no sooner than June 1, 2027 for Education. These are announced milestones, not an explanation for an instruction-following problem, and Google says dates may change. Check Google’s transition page if the interface or availability has changed.
