Why Gold and Silver Markets Close on Weekends—and When Trading Resumes

There is no single weekend timetable for every gold or silver market. For CME’s published NYMEX/COMEX ClearPort schedule, the regular session runs Sunday at 5:00 p.m. to Friday at 4:00 p.m. Central Time, so it resumes Sunday evening. However, CME now offers weekend access for specific smaller gold and silver futures through its 24/7 Globex schedule, subject to maintenance windows. Weekend trades in those products receive the next business day’s trade date and are processed on that day.

Why do gold and silver markets close on weekends?

For markets that follow a weekly session, the closure is part of the venue’s published trading schedule. CME’s regular NYMEX/COMEX ClearPort hours specify a Sunday-to-Friday session, with a weekly pause from Friday afternoon until Sunday evening in Central Time. CME’s schedule establishes when those sessions operate; it does not establish one universal reason why every exchange, bullion market, or retail broker pauses trading.

“Gold and silver markets” can mean exchange-traded futures, a broker’s retail spot-metal product, or another venue’s bullion market. Each may have its own hours. The CME times below apply to the named CME schedules and contracts—not automatically to every product that tracks gold or silver.

When does CME’s regular session resume?

CME Group’s published NYMEX/COMEX ClearPort hours are Sunday at 5:00 p.m. through Friday at 4:00 p.m. Central Time. Under that regular schedule, trading resumes Sunday at 5:00 p.m. CT. This is a venue-specific schedule, not a universal reopening time for all gold and silver trading. See CME’s holiday and trading-hours calendar for the current schedule.

Holiday hours can differ from the regular weekly schedule and are subject to change. Check the calendar for the specific contract and date rather than assuming a normal Sunday reopening.

Which CME gold and silver futures can trade on weekends?

The blanket statement that gold and silver futures are closed all weekend is no longer accurate for CME’s specific 1-Ounce Gold and 100-Ounce Silver futures. CME lists these as 24/7 Globex products, with maintenance windows. That does not mean every gold or silver futures contract trades continuously: access depends on the product and its schedule. CME’s 24/7 Futures and Options Trading page lists eligible products and details.

CME announced 24/7 trading for 1-Ounce Gold futures beginning July 24, 2026, and announced a planned September 11, 2026 launch for 100-Ounce Silver futures, subject to regulatory review as stated in its announcement. The current 24/7 product page lists both contracts. In its August 11, 2026 release, CME said that more than 53,000 1-Ounce Gold contracts had traded during expanded weekend sessions since the July launch, representing approximately $219 million in notional value. Those figures describe activity reported by CME at that point, not a forecast or a measure of all gold trading.

What happens to weekend trades?

Weekend access does not create a separate weekend business-day settlement cycle. CME says trades in the relevant products made from Friday evening through Sunday evening, as well as during holidays, carry the next business day’s trade date. Clearing, settlement, and regulatory reporting are processed on that business day. The trading window may be open while the business-day processing follows the next applicable business day.

How to check the right schedule

  1. Identify the product and venue. Confirm whether you mean a particular CME futures contract, a broker’s spot-metal product, or another market. Do not apply CME futures hours to a different venue.
  2. Check the contract’s session type. Consult CME’s regular trading-hours calendar for the contract and date, and its 24/7 product list to see whether a specific contract has expanded weekend access.
  3. Account for maintenance and holidays. A 24/7 designation is subject to maintenance windows, and holiday schedules can differ from ordinary hours. Verify the current schedule for the day you plan to trade.
  4. Check trade-date handling. For CME’s eligible weekend and holiday trades, note that the trade date and clearing, settlement, and reporting follow the next business day as CME describes.
