1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSubmarine cable faults are first detected and roughly located from terminal stations. A repair ship then narrows the position, recovers and tests the cable, removes the damaged section, splices in spare cable, tests the repair and returns it to the seabed. The exact work depends on the cable system, whether the line is buried, and the water depth.
How operators detect and locate a fault
Terminal stations monitor cable performance and run tests when a fault is suspected. On systems with optical repeaters, the supervisory system can identify the affected supervisory section. The International Telecommunication Union’s guidance puts it this way: For systems equipped with optical submarine repeaters, a first localization to within one supervisory section is obtained using the supervisory system.

At cable ends, operators may also use electrical measurements such as resistance, capacitance and insulation tests, as well as optical reflectometry. These tests produce an estimated fault position for the repair vessel; they are not the same as physically finding or lifting the cable from the seabed. ITU-T G.971 KIS-ORCA’s cable maintenance and repair overview
How a ship narrows the search
Once near the estimated position, the crew can use electroding to refine it. A low-current signal is sent along the cable, and electrodes aboard the vessel detect where that signal changes or disappears, indicating a likely break or damaged section. Electroding helps locate the problem; it does not retrieve the cable. KIS-ORCA

How crews recover and repair the cable
- Search the seabed. The repair vessel sails to the estimated fault area and searches for the cable. In exposed sections, a grapnel towed along the seabed can catch and cut the cable. An ROV may help find and cut buried cable. KIS-ORCA
- Raise and test one end. A holding grapnel lifts one end of the cable to the ship, where the crew tests it and removes the damaged portion. The prepared end is sealed and buoyed at the surface.
- Recover the other end. The vessel repeats the recovery process for the other side of the damaged section. Depending on conditions and cable tension, crews may cut the cable on the seabed and raise each end separately. ITU-T G.971 KIS-ORCA
- Splice in spare cable. The crew joins spare cable to one end and pays it back to the seabed, then recovers the buoyed end and makes the final splice.
- Test and return the repair to the seabed. After tests confirm the cable is working, the crew lowers the repaired section. An ROV may use a water jet to rebury cable that had been buried. KIS-ORCA KDDI’s account of submarine-cable repair
How the repair changes with location and cable design
| Condition | What can change |
|---|---|
| Repeatered system | The supervisory system can initially localize the fault to a supervisory section; further measurements and shipboard searching refine the position. ITU-T G.971 |
| Shallow water | A repair may require extra cable length but not a repeater, according to ITU guidance. ITU-T G.971 |
| Deep sea | A repair usually needs additional cable and may need a repeater to compensate for attenuation. Recovery may also require cutting the cable on the seabed and lifting the two ends separately to limit mechanical tension. ITU-T G.971 |
| Buried cable | An ROV may help locate or cut the cable, and may water-jet the repaired section back into the seabed. KIS-ORCA |
| Exposed cable | A grapnel can be used to catch and cut cable along the seabed before a holding grapnel lifts an end. KIS-ORCA |
Why repair time varies
There is no single duration that applies to every submarine-cable repair. Vessel availability, weather, the fault’s cause and location, and water depth all affect the operation. KDDI notes that recovering cable from 8,000 m depth may take more than one day; KIS-ORCA says a repair operation may take many days. Those examples describe particular operational demands, not a universal estimate or typical turnaround. KDDI KIS-ORCA

Terminal tests and shipboard measurements estimate where the fault lies. Grapnels and subsea equipment then locate and recover the physical cable. Only after recovery can crews inspect and test it, remove the damaged section, splice in spare cable and verify the finished repair before laying it back on the seabed.
