To play PC VR, you need a compatible headset, a Windows PC that meets the requirements of the game you want to play, and compatible software connecting the two. A standalone headset such as a supported Meta Quest can stream PC games over a cable or Wi-Fi; a native PC VR headset is another option. The exact requirements depend on the game, headset, and connection method.
What PC VR means
For PC VR, the computer runs the PC version of the game, renders its images, and sends them to the headset. A standalone headset’s onboard processor does not run the PC version by itself. Its standalone game library and its ability to connect to PC VR are separate compatibility questions.

Before buying anything, check the requirements for the specific game and confirm that the headset works with the software path you plan to use. A PC that meets one app’s minimum requirements is not thereby guaranteed to run every PC VR game.

Native PC VR headsets
Headsets such as Valve Index connect through their supported PC software. SteamVR lists Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Windows Mixed Reality, and other PC VR headsets; check the headset and game requirements for the particular setup. Valve’s SteamVR page provides its current compatibility overview.

Meta Quest with Meta Link
Meta’s device comparison information lists PC VR support through Meta Quest Link using either a cable or Air Link over Wi-Fi for relevant Quest devices. For wired Link, use a compatible USB-C data cable—not a cable that only charges. Meta’s developer hardware setup page discusses a data cable in a development context, so it should not be treated as a consumer gaming PC specification. See Meta’s device comparison and its hardware setup guidance.
Meta Quest with Steam Link
Steam Link is a separate wireless route for playing SteamVR games on supported headsets. Steam and SteamVR run on the PC; the Steam Link app runs on the headset. Valve’s support page names supported Meta Quest, PICO, and HTC models and describes the PC and network requirements. Confirm your exact headset model is on the list before relying on this method: Steam Link headset support and requirements.

Check the PC against the right requirements
Start with the game’s own system requirements, then check the requirements of the headset software or streaming app. For Steam Link, Valve specifies a Windows 10 or newer PC running Steam and SteamVR, with an NVIDIA GTX 970 or better or an AMD RX 570 or better. Valve’s support page excludes the RX 6400 and RX 6500 XT. These are Steam Link requirements, not a universal PC VR specification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe Meta Store listing for Steam Link gives a recommended baseline of an Intel Core i5-4590 or AMD FX 8350 equivalent or better, 16 GB of RAM, and an NVIDIA RTX 2070 or better. It also recommends broadband internet, Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E, and connecting the PC to the router by wire. This is the listing’s Steam Link recommendation, not a minimum for all PC VR games or a Meta Link specification: Steam Link on the Meta Store.

Do not substitute Steam Link’s GPU list for Meta Link’s PC requirements. A current consumer Meta Link minimum and recommended PC table, including its complete supported GPU list, is not established by the cited Meta developer pages. Check Meta’s current consumer requirements before choosing a PC specifically for wired Link or Air Link.
Choose wired or wireless play
| Connection | What it needs | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Wired Meta Link | A supported Quest, compatible USB-C data cable, and PC/software meeting the current Meta Link and game requirements. | The cable tethers the headset, but the connection does not depend on Wi-Fi streaming. |
| Air Link | A supported Quest, compatible PC and software, and a suitable local Wi-Fi connection. | No cable tether, but results depend on the wireless network. |
| Steam Link | A headset model on Valve’s support list, Steam and SteamVR on a Windows PC meeting Valve’s Steam Link requirements, and Wi-Fi. | Wireless play without a Link cable; the PC and headset need a stable local network connection. |
For Steam Link, Valve states a minimum of 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5. Treat that as a floor, not a guarantee of a smooth experience. The Meta Store listing recommends Wi-Fi 6 or 6E and a wired PC-to-router connection. A router upgrade is only relevant if the existing network fails the chosen connection’s requirements or performs poorly.

Set up the play area safely
There is no single room-size figure established for every PC VR headset and game. Follow the headset’s play-area setup and the game’s safety prompts, clear nearby obstacles, and leave enough space for the movements the experience requires. Tracking systems and game modes differ, so use the boundary guidance shown by your own headset.

A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Choose the game. Read its PC requirements rather than relying on a generic “VR-ready” label.
- Choose the headset and path. Verify the exact model against the game’s needs and the current support information for SteamVR, Meta Link/Air Link, or Steam Link.
- Compare the PC to that path. Check the GPU, operating system, and other stated requirements for the game and connection software. Do not treat Steam Link’s requirements as Meta Link requirements.
- Check the connection. For wired Meta Link, confirm the USB-C cable supports data. For wireless play, confirm the network meets the app’s stated requirements and can provide a stable local connection.
- Set up a clear play area. Complete the headset’s boundary and safety setup before playing.
