AI can write or revise the HTML, CSS, and capture code, but an image generator does not execute arbitrary HTML as a browser does. Use Playwright when you want to run and control the browser yourself, or a hosted rendering API when you want to submit HTML or a URL to a service.
What AI can—and cannot—do with HTML screenshots
Think of the job as two steps: render the HTML, then capture the browser output. An AI coding assistant can draft the page, adjust CSS, create a Playwright script, or help diagnose visual differences after you inspect an image. The screenshot itself should come from a browser engine if it needs to reflect the page as a visitor would see it.

Do not assume that asking a text-to-image generator to “make a screenshot” will accurately reproduce arbitrary HTML. The reviewed browser documentation establishes rendering and capture workflows, not a guarantee that image-generation models execute HTML or produce pixel-accurate results. Always inspect the rendered output.
Prepare the HTML and assets
- Ask AI for code, not a substitute screenshot. Provide the intended content, layout, target viewport, and any constraints. Ask for HTML and CSS, or for changes to an existing page.
- Keep dependencies reachable. Images, stylesheets, scripts, and web fonts affect the rendered result. Ensure local files are served from a reachable location or external assets can load from the browser or rendering service.
- Choose the page state. Specify whether the page should be captured at its initial state or after a particular interaction. Dynamic content may need time or a condition to finish rendering.
- Record the viewport. Responsive CSS changes with viewport width and height. A screenshot without the viewport dimensions is not a reproducible representation of the same page.
Generate a screenshot with Playwright
Playwright is the do-it-yourself route: your code controls a browser, navigates to the page, and calls the documented Page screenshot API. It supports viewport screenshots and full-page captures. The example below assumes Node.js, Playwright installed in the project, and a local HTML file named page.html in the current directory.

Install and run
- Install Playwright:
npm install playwright. - Save your HTML as
page.htmlin the project directory. If it references local assets by relative paths, serving the project over HTTP is often more reliable than opening a file URL. - Save this script as
screenshot.mjs, then runnode screenshot.mjs.

}The output is website.png. The example uses a 1440-by-900 CSS-pixel viewport and a device scale factor of 1; change those values to match the display you need. For a page hosted locally or remotely, navigate to its HTTP(S) URL instead of the file:// address.
Choose what the image represents
- Viewport capture: omit
fullPage: trueto capture the visible viewport. This is useful for an above-the-fold preview. - Full-page capture: set
fullPage: trueto capture the full scrollable page. Long or dynamically loaded pages can take longer and produce very tall images. - Image output: Playwright’s screenshot API documents output controls; choose a format appropriate to the consumer and confirm supported options in the current API documentation.
Wait for the content you need
A page’s load event does not necessarily mean every animation, client-side request, or lazy-loaded image has finished. If an important element appears later, wait for it explicitly before taking the screenshot. For example, after navigation, use await page.locator('.hero').waitFor() to wait for a specific element. For content that appears after an interaction, perform that interaction before capture. Avoid arbitrary long sleeps when a specific page condition can be awaited.
Use a hosted browser API for HTML or a URL
A hosted renderer can remove the need to manage a browser runtime in your own script. Cloudflare Browser Run documents a screenshot endpoint that accepts either a url or raw html, renders the page including JavaScript, and offers REST API and Workers Binding access. Its documentation also describes viewport and wait configuration, plus authentication options such as cookies, HTTP basic authentication, and extra headers. Choose a hosted endpoint when submitting HTML or a URL to an API fits your workflow and you prefer not to own browser setup. Choose Playwright when you want the browser and capture logic inside your own code. The available documentation does not establish a price or performance winner between these approaches.

Make screenshots reproducible
- Fix the viewport and scale. Save the dimensions and pixel scale with your capture script. A different viewport can trigger different responsive layouts.
- Control timing. Wait for the specific content or rendering work needed by the page, rather than assuming every site is static.
- Check external resources. Missing fonts, blocked requests, inaccessible image URLs, or failed scripts can make the screenshot differ from the intended design.
- Authenticate only when authorized. For protected pages, use the browser or service’s supported session and authentication mechanisms. Do not put passwords or tokens in public prompts, source examples, or screenshots.
- Inspect and iterate. Review the actual output, ask AI to suggest targeted HTML or CSS changes, then render again. That is a practical iteration loop, not a guarantee of visual accuracy.

The screenshot is blank or incomplete
Check whether navigation completed, whether the page requires authentication, and whether its scripts or assets loaded successfully. If the page draws content after initial navigation, wait for the relevant element or state before capturing. For a hosted API, check the service’s response and documented wait or authentication options.
Images or fonts are missing
Verify that asset paths resolve from the page’s actual URL and that the browser or hosted renderer can access the asset hosts. A local HTML file with relative paths may not resolve the way it does when served by a development server; try serving the directory over HTTP.

The layout differs from the intended design
Confirm the viewport width and height, device scale, loaded fonts, and responsive breakpoints. Then inspect the rendered page in the same browser context and adjust the HTML or CSS. AI suggestions can help, but the browser output is the check that matters.
Lazy-loaded content is absent
Lazy content may not exist in the document until it approaches the viewport or another page condition occurs. Scroll or interact as the page requires, then wait for the target content before capture. Full-page capture alone should not be treated as proof that every lazy asset has loaded.
A protected page redirects or refuses capture
Provide an authorized session using a supported cookie, authentication, or header mechanism. Cloudflare’s endpoint documentation describes cookies, HTTP basic authentication, and additional headers. Keep credentials private and avoid embedding secrets in code that will be shared.

Can AI make a screenshot directly from raw HTML?
AI can help create the HTML and automate a browser capture, but a faithful screenshot requires rendering the HTML in a browser. Do not treat an image generated from a text prompt as an executed rendering of arbitrary HTML.
Should I capture the viewport or the full page?
Use a viewport capture when the goal is to show what is visible on screen at a particular size. Use full-page capture when readers need the entire scrollable document in one image.
