AI deflation is the risk that AI lets IT services firms deliver the same work with fewer labor hours, putting pressure on prices or changing how contracts are priced. It does not mean the whole market is shrinking: demand for AI-related services can grow even as buyers press for lower prices. The key question is who captures the productivity savings—provider, customer, or both.
What does “AI deflation” mean in IT services?
Here, deflation refers to the price of a unit of service or the labor needed to produce a result—not general consumer-price inflation or falling prices for AI models. If AI reduces the hours needed for a software project, support task, or consulting deliverable, a provider may face pressure to charge less for that work, even if the value delivered is unchanged.

Productivity does not automatically translate into a lower customer bill. Contract terms and negotiation determine whether the provider keeps the initial efficiency gain, passes some of it to the customer at renewal, or shares it through payment tied to outcomes. Forrester’s Q2 2024 analysis said AI-enabled automation at scale could drive efficiency and have a deflationary impact on service providers, and warned that providers reliant on time-and-materials models may struggle. It can put downward pressure on prices, but the evidence does not establish a single price reduction across the industry. A provider might quote less when competing for work, pass savings through when a contract is renewed, or retain savings under an existing fixed-price agreement. Conversely, demand for new AI, cloud, and transformation work can rise at the same time as prices for some services come under pressure.

That coexistence is visible in ISG’s Q2 2026 data. Its index recorded a 43% year-over-year increase in combined global managed-services and cloud-based as-a-service contract value, reaching a record $42.4 billion. The index covers commercial outsourcing contracts with annual contract value of at least $5 million. ISG also reported stronger competition, pricing deflation, and provider-funded AI transformation increasingly embedded in contracts. The record measures contract value, not a broad increase in prices or proof that every services category is growing. See ISG’s Q2 2026 results.
Who keeps the savings under different contract models?
| Contract model | How the provider is paid | Where AI productivity pressure can appear | What to examine |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time and materials | Hours or effort consumed | Fewer hours can mean less billable revenue unless demand or rates rise. | Are rates fixed? How are AI tools and time savings treated? |
| Fixed price | Agreed fee for defined scope | The provider may retain savings from lower effort while scope, quality, and price remain stable; competition or renewal can reset the economics. | Is scope measurable? Who bears rework and delivery risk? |
| Outcome- or consumption-based | Agreed result or usage | Payment is tied more directly to delivered value or usage, reducing reliance on headcount or seat counts. | How are outcomes measured, audited, and attributed? Who funds the transformation? |
This is a way to reason about incentives, not a standardized comparison of realized margins: the cited sources do not quantify margin outcomes by contract type. ISG’s observation that providers increasingly fund AI transformation within contracts also makes it important to clarify whether the provider or customer pays for implementation and how any gains are shared.

Will AI reduce IT services companies’ margins?
Not necessarily. A provider’s margin can improve if its costs fall faster than the prices it charges. It can worsen if customer price reductions outpace productivity, utilization weakens, or spending on transformation and innovation rises. The effect therefore depends on delivery costs, pricing power, demand, utilization, contract mix, and investment—not just on how many hours AI saves.
IBM’s 2025 results illustrate why company disclosures should be read in context: IBM reported 1.8% consulting revenue growth and said segment profit and margin reflected productivity actions, partly offset by strategic investment and innovation. This is IBM’s account of its own results, not an estimate of AI’s causal contribution or a template for other providers. Read IBM’s 2025 results.

What do company results say—and not say—about AI deflation?
Company growth or decline can reflect many forces, so it should not be treated as a direct measure of AI-driven price changes. For example, Capgemini reported 3.2% constant-currency growth in Strategy & Transformation consulting revenue in 2024, while generative AI bookings were close to 4% of group bookings. Those figures indicate business activity; they do not measure realized AI-related price reductions or margin gains. See Capgemini’s FY 2024 results.
IBM reported a 3.2% year-over-year decline in Technology Consulting revenue in 2024. The company described client reprioritization and spending constraints among the factors affecting the environment; the decline should not be attributed solely to AI. See IBM’s 2024 results.

Allianz Research describes broader pressure on pricing and changes to services business models, but its sector perspective is analysis rather than a direct, comparable measure of AI’s causal effect. Read Allianz Research’s analysis.
Why there is no reliable sector-wide AI deflation percentage
The available evidence supports qualitative pricing pressure and changes in contracting, but it does not isolate how much of any price or margin change was caused by AI across the sector. Provider results combine factors such as utilization, wages, project mix, investment, demand, and competition. Nor do the cited figures provide a comparable, sector-wide measure of prices for the same service before and after AI adoption.

For buyers, the practical question is therefore not a forecast percentage but how a contract defines scope, measures results, allocates transformation costs, and treats efficiency gains. For providers, the commercial challenge is to make productivity valuable without relying entirely on selling labor hours.
