What Would It Take to Terraform Mars? Erika DeBenedictis’ Ideas, Explained

Mars lacks enough accessible CO2 for major greenhouse warming with present technology. Erika DeBenedictis’ ideas focus instead on super-greenhouse gases and contained microbes that could turn local resources into settlement materials.

Terraforming Mars would require far more than releasing a greenhouse gas or planting hardy microbes. A workable sequence would have to warm the planet, raise atmospheric pressure, keep surface water stable, manufacture oxygen, and build contained biological and industrial systems that can operate on local resources. NASA’s atmospheric inventory studies conclude that this is beyond present-day technology because Mars does not have enough accessible carbon dioxide for major greenhouse warming.

Erika DeBenedictis, CEO of Pioneer Labs, is approaching the problem as a research program rather than a near-term construction project. Her proposals focus on super-greenhouse-gas biology and microbes that convert simulated Martian soil, water and air into useful materials for settlements.

Why Mars cannot support Earth-like surface life now

Mars has an atmosphere composed mostly of carbon dioxide, but its surface pressure is less than 1% of Earth’s. The air is therefore too thin to retain much heat and too tenuous to keep liquid water stable at the surface. Water exposed on Mars tends to freeze or evaporate rather than form persistent lakes and rivers.

That makes warming the first physical constraint. DeBenedictis wrote, “To terraform Mars, the fundamental challenge is to heat the planet up enough that liquid surface water doesn’t immediately freeze or evaporate.” Pressure matters as well: a thicker atmosphere would improve heat retention and make water less volatile, but the available Martian carbon dioxide is nowhere near enough for an Earth-like atmosphere.

The carbon-dioxide ceiling

A NASA-sponsored analysis examined the major accessible carbon-dioxide sources that engineers might mobilize. Its estimates show why simply releasing Martian CO2 cannot solve the problem.

Potential source Estimated atmospheric effect What the estimate means
Polar carbon dioxide Pressure would rise to about 1.2% of Earth’s Even vaporizing the polar deposits would leave Mars at a tiny fraction of terrestrial pressure.
CO2 adsorbed in soil dust Up to 4% of the pressure needed for an Earth-like atmosphere Extraction would require large-scale processing of Martian soil.
Plausible near-surface carbon-bearing minerals Less than 5% of the required pressure Mining and heating minerals would demand an industrial system that does not yet exist.
All sources combined in the NASA infographic About 7% of Earth’s pressure This is an upper estimate for atmospheric pressure, not a breathable-air target.

NASA planetary scientist Bruce Jakosky summarized the conclusion: “Our results suggest that there is not enough CO2 remaining on Mars to provide significant greenhouse warming were the gas to be put into the atmosphere; in addition, most of the CO2 gas is not accessible and could not be readily mobilized. As a result, terraforming Mars is not possible using present-day technology.”

The 7% figure should not be read as a nearly finished atmosphere. It remains far below Earth’s pressure, would not provide breathable oxygen, and would not by itself guarantee a warm, stable climate.

How super-greenhouse gases could change the first step

Because native CO2 is insufficient, DeBenedictis discusses super-greenhouse gases: compounds designed to trap substantially more heat per molecule than carbon dioxide. In principle, manufacturing a relatively small mass of such gases could produce more warming than releasing the remaining Martian CO2.

The proposal shifts the engineering question from “Where is enough natural CO2?” to “Can an industrial or biological process manufacture a powerful, persistent greenhouse gas from materials available on Mars?” No specific compound, production rate, energy budget, atmospheric lifetime or planetary temperature increase has been established. Those are the measurements needed before this approach could be evaluated as a practical climate intervention.

A realistic terraforming sequence

Terraforming is best understood as a chain in which each stage enables the next. The sequence below describes the dependencies, not a funded construction schedule.

  1. Generate warming. Deploy a mechanism such as engineered super-greenhouse gases or another high-leverage heat-trapping system.
  2. Raise and retain pressure. Mobilize useful volatiles where possible, while accepting that native CO2 alone cannot approach Earth-like pressure.
  3. Stabilize surface water. Reach conditions under which water can remain liquid long enough for chemical, geological and biological cycles to operate.
  4. Build oxygen production. Split atmospheric CO2 or other feedstocks with industrial equipment; oxygen must be accumulated rather than produced only in short demonstrations.
  5. Expand biological and industrial capacity. Use contained organisms and factories to make soil amendments, polymers, food inputs, shelter materials and fuels before attempting any open-air ecosystem.
  6. Manage containment and planetary protection. Prevent accidental release of Earth organisms and preserve scientifically valuable Martian environments while capabilities are still experimental.

What engineered microbes can do now

The current biological work associated with DeBenedictis is local resource utilization, not global terraforming. In a Space.com report dated 9 October 2026, Pioneer Labs described sPL.001, a microbe grown on artificial Mars-like feedstocks that can produce bioplastics.

sPL.001 operates in a heated, stirred bioreactor, requires processed nitrogen and does not photosynthesize. Those requirements are decisive: the organism is not demonstrated to live uncontained on Mars, spread through open regolith or create an oxygenated atmosphere. Its value is as a possible factory organism that could turn prepared local resources into materials inside a controlled settlement system.

DeBenedictis said, “The biggest limitation of what we’ve done is that simulated Mars isn’t actual Mars.” Testing with real Martian regolith, water chemistry and atmospheric contaminants remains a necessary step. A successful real-regolith trial would still demonstrate a local manufacturing process, not a self-sustaining planetary ecosystem.

Her broader vision is that biology could perform many support functions settlers need. She told Space.com, “On Mars, nature will do the same jobs for us that she does on Earth — create fertile soil, shelter, oxygen and food.” In practice, those jobs would initially be performed in reactors, greenhouses and other protected facilities.

Oxygen is technically demonstrated but difficult to scale

NASA reports that Mars has roughly 1/10,000th of Earth’s oxygen density. The Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment (MOXIE) demonstrated extraction of oxygen from Martian CO2, proving the chemical process can work on the planet.

Scale is the obstacle. NASA estimates that a future system serving human missions might need to be about 200 times larger than the rover demonstration. Such equipment would require continuous power, maintenance, replacement parts and reliable gas handling. Oxygen production for habitats, suits and ascent vehicles is therefore an industrial infrastructure problem, not evidence that Mars is close to having breathable air.

How the leading approaches compare

Approach Primary benefit Main limitation identified so far Near-term role
Release polar or mineral CO2 Uses material already on Mars NASA estimates the accessible inventory can provide only a small fraction of Earth’s pressure. Scientific study and limited atmospheric processing
Manufacture super-greenhouse gases Potentially high warming per unit mass Production method, energy demand, lifetime and climate response are not established. Laboratory and atmospheric-model research
Contained microbial factories Could make bioplastics and other settlement materials from local feedstocks sPL.001 has been tested on simulated materials in a controlled bioreactor and is non-photosynthetic. Local resource utilization inside protected facilities
MOXIE-derived oxygen plants Demonstrated oxygen extraction from Martian CO2 Human-scale production may require a system about 200 times larger than the demonstration. Mission life support and propellant production

Why the field is being treated as a roadmap

A workshop summary submitted on 7 October 2025 by Stork and DeBenedictis frames terraforming as a way to start with possible end states, work backward through competing alternatives and identify research priorities that can also benefit Earth. That approach avoids pretending that one invention will solve climate, water, oxygen, biology and logistics simultaneously.

Important unknowns include the response of the Martian climate to imported greenhouse compounds, the durability of water at the surface, the availability of usable nitrogen and other nutrients, the energy required for mining and chemical processing, and the containment consequences of releasing engineered organisms. The workshop framework treats those unknowns as research questions rather than settled design specifications.

What this means for a realistic timeline and budget

No defensible end-to-end cost or completion date has been published for terraforming Mars. The missing figures are not a minor accounting detail: they reflect unresolved physical limits, uncertain material inventories and the absence of an industrial base on Mars.

The most credible near-term interpretation is therefore incremental. Robotic missions can characterize resources; laboratory teams can test greenhouse chemistry and organisms; and future settlements can deploy enclosed systems for water, oxygen, food and construction materials. Only after those systems work reliably would open-air environmental engineering become a meaningful question.
