WordPress hosting is the service and server environment that keeps a WordPress site online. WordPress is the software; a hosting provider supplies the server where it runs. You can use general-purpose hosting that meets WordPress’s requirements or a WordPress-focused service that may include installation, backups, updates, or development tools.
What WordPress hosting means
A host is the company you pay to make your site available online. A server is the computer that stores and runs the site’s files and software. “WordPress hosting” describes the hosting service and environment used to run WordPress; it is not a separate version of WordPress itself. The WordPress Developer Resources guide explains the distinction between hosting and the software you install.

General-purpose hosting can run different web applications, including WordPress. WordPress-specific hosting is designed for WordPress or may come with WordPress already installed. Depending on the provider and plan, it may also include services such as backups, updates, or developer tools. The label alone does not tell you exactly what is included.

WordPress.org’s current requirements page recommends PHP 8.3 or greater, MariaDB 10.11 or greater or MySQL 8.0 or greater, and HTTPS support. It recommends Apache or Nginx as server software. These are the published recommendations on the requirements page, accessed in 2026; check the page again before choosing a service because software recommendations can change.

The WordPress Hosting Handbook separately recommends PHP 8.4 or later for production environments. That is hosting-team production guidance, while the requirements page gives a baseline of PHP 8.3 or greater. The handbook also advises hosts to test their full stack before changing the default PHP version.
The handbook gives hosts PHP memory starting points of 128M minimum for a vanilla WordPress installation, 256M as a recommended default, and 512M or more for resource-intensive workloads. These are host-oriented guidelines, not guaranteed requirements for every site or a simple rule for choosing a consumer plan; actual needs depend on the site’s themes and plugins.

Do not rely on an old requirements list copied from an outdated article. WordPress.org warns that older PHP and database versions may be end-of-life and can expose sites to security vulnerabilities.
How to compare hosting options
Instead of choosing by the “WordPress hosting” label alone, check the service details that affect setup, upkeep, and recovery. WordPress.org’s Hosting WordPress documentation notes: “If you are new to WordPress, it may be a good idea to have your site hosted by a provider with experience in WordPress hosting.” Treat that as practical guidance, not a guarantee that every WordPress-focused plan is suitable.
- Installation and setup: Find out whether WordPress is pre-installed or whether you will install it yourself.
- Updates: Check which updates the provider handles, if any, and whether you are still responsible for updating WordPress, themes, or plugins.
- Backups and restoration: Confirm whether backups are included, how often they run, how long they are retained, and how you can restore the site. Feature availability and terms vary by plan.
- Staging and developer tools: If you expect to test changes before they reach your live site, check whether a staging environment or relevant tools are included.
- Compatibility: Verify that the server meets WordPress.org’s current PHP, database, and HTTPS recommendations.
- Support: Check what support is provided and when it is available. A provider listing is not a comparative measure of support quality or response times.
The WordPress.org hosting directory describes providers and features, but it is not an independent side-by-side performance ranking. These sources do not establish which provider is fastest, safest, best, or cheapest.

Start with the practical help you need. If you are comfortable installing WordPress and managing routine maintenance, general-purpose hosting that meets the current technical requirements may be enough. If you would rather have WordPress set up for you or want services such as backups, updates, or staging, consider a WordPress-focused plan—but verify exactly which features are included and what work remains yours.

There is no universal advantage established here for managed or WordPress-specific hosting in speed or security. Those outcomes depend on the actual service, configuration, plan, and site. Compare providers using the same checklist rather than assuming the category guarantees a particular result.
