For pickleball, choose a court shoe that fits securely, supports side-to-side movement and has a sole suitable for your court. A tennis court shoe can work just as well as a pickleball-labeled model; the sport name alone does not establish performance. Check the facility’s surface rules, too: USA Pickleball’s 2024 rulebook says shoes must not mark or damage the playing surface.
Do you need special shoes to play pickleball?
No. You need footwear appropriate for court movement and the surface, not necessarily a shoe marketed specifically for pickleball. Tennis court shoes are a reasonable option because both sports involve lateral movement. Running shoes are designed for a different movement pattern and should not be your default choice for court play.

Pickleball-specific models may include details aimed at the sport, such as extra protection around the toe for players who drag it. That can be useful if it matches how you play, but it is not a requirement. If your tennis court shoes fit well, feel stable and suit the court, there may be no reason to replace them.

What matters when choosing pickleball shoes?
Secure fit and lateral support
Look for a snug, supportive fit that keeps your foot stable during side-to-side movement. Pickleball.com’s equipment guide recommends lateral support, court-appropriate cushioning and a secure fit as general buying considerations. These are practical selection points, not findings from a clinical or controlled footwear study.
#1 Best Overall
- Regular fit trainers with lace closure for secure comfort on the tennis court.
- Regular fit
- Laces
- Textile and synthetic upper
- Textile sockliner
Pay attention to width and comfort as well as length. A shoe that feels unstable or constricting in a store is unlikely to become a better fit on court. For example, Babolat lists its SFX 4 Pickleball Women as a wide-fit, all-court model and describes three midfoot straps for lateral support. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent test results or proof that the shoe improves performance.
Sole suitability for the court
Match the sole to both the court surface and the venue’s requirements. Rule 2.G.3 of the USA Pickleball Official Rulebook, GPF Edition (2024) states: “Shoes must have soles that do not mark or damage the court’s playing surface.” Indoor facilities may also set their own footwear requirements, so confirm those before playing.
Rank #2
- Trainers with a rubber outsole for reliable grip on the tennis court.
- Regular fit
- Laces
- Textile and synthetic upper
- Textile sockliner
Indoor, outdoor or both
Pick the sole with your usual surface in mind. The Pickleball.com equipment guide distinguishes shoes intended for smooth indoor floors from outdoor shoes with more durable soles, and cautions that indoor soles may wear faster on rough outdoor courts. If you play on both, an all-court model is one option; assess the actual surfaces you use and how the shoe fits rather than relying on the label alone.

| Option | When it may make sense | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Tennis court shoes | You already own a pair that is comfortable and stable for court movement. | Fit, lateral support, sole condition and compatibility with the court surface. |
| Pickleball-labeled court shoes | You want features described for pickleball, such as toe-drag protection. | Whether those features address your needs, alongside fit and surface suitability. JOOLA describes its R4LLY as an all-court shoe with a reinforced toe area on its pickleball footwear page. |
| All-court shoes | You play on more than one type of court and want one pair to consider for mixed use. | Whether the sole suits the surfaces you actually use and the shoe stays secure and comfortable. |
These categories are not a performance ranking. The available product pages describe their own models; they do not provide independent head-to-head evidence identifying a universally best shoe.
Rank #3
- Runs Small
- Breathable mesh underlays
- The sockliner is produced with the solution dyeing process that reduces water usage by approximately 33% and carbon emissions by approximately 45% compared to the conventional dyeing technology
- Lightweight design that offers flexibility and a comfortable fit
What shoes should you avoid?
Avoid footwear that is unsuitable for the venue’s surface, marks or damages the court, or fails to keep your foot comfortably supported during lateral movement. Do not assume that a running shoe is suitable just because it is comfortable for walking or forward motion. If you are unsure about a shoe’s sole or an indoor facility’s policy, ask the venue before playing.

The practical benefit is choosing footwear suited to court movement and the playing surface—not a guarantee of more wins, greater speed or injury prevention. The cited sources do not establish a quantified gameplay improvement or injury-reduction figure attributable to a shoe. Treat manufacturer performance descriptions as claims about a product, not independent proof.
