A widescreen format is a frame or display that is proportionally wider than traditional 4:3 television. In digital television, 16:9 is the standard widescreen example. The ratio describes the image’s shape—not its resolution or physical size.
What does widescreen mean?
Widescreen describes an image or display that has more width relative to its height than the traditional 4:3 television shape. The term depends on context: 16:9 is explicitly identified as widescreen in digital television standards, but it is not a single ratio used by every medium.

An aspect ratio compares width with height. A 16:9 image is 16 units wide for every 9 units high, or about 1.78:1. A 4:3 image is 4 units wide for every 3 units high, or about 1.33:1. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) covers both ratios in its digital television recommendation, ITU-R BT.601.
How are aspect ratio, resolution and screen size different?
- Aspect ratio is the proportional shape of the image, such as 16:9 or 4:3.
- Resolution is the number of picture samples or pixels. The ITU gives 1920 pixels per line and 1080 lines as an example of a common 16:9 image format; that example does not make 16:9 and HD interchangeable. ITU’s HDTV explanation
- Screen size describes the physical dimensions of a display, often given by its diagonal. Size alone does not determine its aspect ratio.
In short, 16:9 is a shape; 1920 × 1080 is one pixel grid that can use that shape. Other resolutions can also have a 16:9 ratio.

How do 4:3 and 16:9 compare?
| Format | Shape | Context |
|---|---|---|
| 4:3 | 1.33:1 | Traditional television shape and a comparison point for widescreen television. |
| 16:9 | 1.78:1 | Widescreen television shape identified in ITU digital-TV recommendations. |
These ratios tell you how wide a frame is relative to its height, not how detailed the image is. To assess whether content will fit a display, consider both the source framing and the display’s shape.
Why can a video have black bars on a widescreen TV?
If a video and display have different aspect ratios, the whole image cannot fill the screen at its original proportions without an accommodation. Depending on the content and playback settings, the picture may be shown with unused areas or bars, cropped, or reframed. Cropping and pan-and-scan can remove parts of the original image; leaving bars preserves the full frame.

Production guidance for the transition between 4:3 and 16:9 broadcasting addresses framing and safe areas, including ways to accommodate the different shapes: ITU-R BT.1379. The broader trade-off is unavoidable: a chosen aspect ratio will not match every other ratio, so some form of accommodation is needed. What should producers keep inside the frame?
Keep important action and graphics within safe areas suited to the intended format and distribution. The ITU’s BT.1848-1 recommendation gives 16:9 production safe-area guidance for 625-line, 720-line, 1080-line, 2160-line and 4320-line formats. It distinguishes safe action and safe graphics areas. These areas lie inside the active image and are intended to help keep critical picture elements visible on the majority of home television receivers.

Is one widescreen ratio best for everyone?
No universal preference follows from the available findings. A 1996 SMPTE article reported no clear general preference or physiological reason for one moving-image ratio. A separate 2002 study found preferences depended on screen size; in the home environments studied, about 2:1 was most preferred. Those are study-specific results, not a rule for every viewer, screen or type of content. SMPTE Journal, 1996; SMPTE study, 2002.
