Google File System (GFS): How Its Distributed Storage Design Works

Google File System is a distributed storage design for large data workloads. Learn how its master, chunkservers, and clients divide metadata and file transfers.

The Google File System (GFS) is a distributed file system Google designed for large, data-intensive applications. In its published architecture, a master manages metadata and coordinates the system, chunkservers store replicated pieces of files, and clients contact chunkservers directly to transfer file data. The design prioritizes fault tolerance and high aggregate throughput on commodity hardware.

What GFS is—and what it is not

GFS was designed and implemented by Sanjay Ghemawat, Howard Gobioff, and Shun-Tak Leung. Their paper appeared at the 19th ACM Symposium on Operating Systems Principles in 2003. Google Research describes it as a scalable distributed file system for large, data-intensive applications, built to tolerate faults on inexpensive hardware while delivering high aggregate performance to many clients. It is a storage system for distributed computing workloads, not a local disk format or a general-purpose consumer file-sharing service. Its interface was designed for the applications it served and was not POSIX-compatible. The paper also specifies that clients and chunkservers did not cache file data, although clients did cache metadata; these are characteristics of the published GFS design, not universal rules for distributed file systems. How the GFS architecture works

A GFS cluster in the paper consists of one master, multiple chunkservers, and multiple clients. Files are divided into fixed-size chunks, each identified by a unique identifier. Chunkservers keep chunk data on local disks, and chunks are replicated across chunkservers to improve reliability. The GFS paper

File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
  • Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

The master manages metadata and coordination

The master maintains the file-system namespace, access-control information, mappings from files to chunks, and current chunk locations. It also coordinates system-wide work such as leases, garbage collection, and chunk migration. It manages the system’s map of stored data rather than serving as the routine path for all file contents.

Chunkservers store the data

Chunkservers store file chunks on their local disks and report their status to the master. Replication means that a chunk has copies on multiple chunkservers, so the system can continue to provide data when individual machines or disks fail.

Clients get metadata first, then transfer data directly

  1. A client asks the master for metadata, including the locations of the chunks it needs.
  2. The client communicates with the relevant chunkservers to read or write the file data.
  3. The master remains responsible for metadata and coordination, while data transfer takes place between clients and chunkservers.

This separation reduces the master’s involvement in common data operations and helps the architecture serve many clients.

Why GFS was designed for large, append-heavy workloads

The authors expected failures in an environment containing many machines and disks. GFS used replication, monitoring, checksums, and automatic recovery to address machine failures and data corruption. Replication improves resilience and supports recovery, but it also consumes additional storage capacity. The GFS paper

The intended workloads commonly involved large files, bulk processing, and files that were appended to and later read, often sequentially. For many of these applications, the authors prioritized sustained bandwidth over low latency for an individual operation. The large chunk size also reduced how often clients needed to consult the master and lowered metadata overhead for those workloads. These choices reflect the needs of the published system, not a recommendation for every storage workload.
