Yes: a team can share Kotlin source and business logic across Android, iPhone, and a JavaScript website. Kotlin Multiplatform makes that possible, but the mobile app itself does not run in the browser. Shared Kotlin code is compiled for a web target, while the website can keep its own interface—or share more UI through the optional Compose Multiplatform framework.
What it means for mobile Kotlin code to power a website
Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP) lets developers share selected Kotlin code across platforms, including Android, iOS, and web. A project might share data models, validation rules, or networking logic while building a separate interface for each platform. The shared source is compiled for the relevant target; an Android or iOS app binary is not simply loaded as a website.

For a JavaScript website, one option is Kotlin/JS. JetBrains describes it as a way to compile Kotlin code, the Kotlin standard library, and compatible dependencies into JavaScript for web environments. That JavaScript can run in the browser as part of a web application.

In practice, “the apps’ Kotlin code powers the website” can mean that the website and mobile apps use the same Kotlin implementation for some underlying behavior. It does not necessarily mean they share every feature, screen, or line of code.

Does Kotlin Multiplatform require a shared interface?
No. Sharing business logic and sharing the user interface are separate architectural choices. A team can keep Android and iOS interfaces native and build a web-specific interface, while sharing selected code underneath.
Compose Multiplatform is an optional way to share UI code across supported targets. It is not a prerequisite for Kotlin Multiplatform. A team choosing whether to share UI should consider platform-specific APIs, the website’s integration needs, and its existing Kotlin, Swift, and web expertise. Official capability descriptions establish the available approaches, but do not settle which is faster or cheaper for every project.

Kotlin/JS and Kotlin/Wasm are web-target options
Kotlin/JS compiles Kotlin and compatible dependencies to JavaScript. JetBrains also describes Kotlin/Wasm as another route for web development. These are different browser-target approaches, and a project’s choice depends on its technical requirements and integration context. Check current Kotlin documentation for target support and setup details, since availability can change.

Down Dog: shared Kotlin across clients and server
In a 2021 case study, JetBrains describes Down Dog launching a Kotlin/JS web version six months after deciding to use Kotlin for Android and server development. The account also describes code shared across clients and server. This is a company-specific example, not a standard delivery timeline or a current performance benchmark. Read JetBrains’ Down Dog case study.
Cash App: multiplatform does not mean eliminating every tool
JetBrains’ 2021 Cash App case study says the team wanted to reduce shared JavaScript that was causing problems and improve collaboration between Android and iOS engineers. It also describes native Android and iOS toolchains alongside a limited JavaScript runtime for some shared server-driven logic. The example shows that adopting Kotlin Multiplatform need not replace every platform tool or remove every use of JavaScript. Read JetBrains’ Cash App case study.

Quizlet and Mirego: shared code in different settings
JetBrains’ production-use page describes Quizlet migrating shared code from JavaScript to Kotlin and Mirego sharing business logic across web and mobile or TV targets. The page reports a Quizlet performance improvement but supplies no quantified metric or independent evaluation in the material cited here, so it should not be treated as a general performance guarantee. See JetBrains’ Kotlin Multiplatform production-use examples.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to decide what your project should share
- Start with reusable logic. Identify code with the same rules across platforms, such as models or business logic, and decide whether it belongs in a shared Kotlin module.
- Choose UI boundaries separately. Keep platform-native interfaces if that best fits the product, or evaluate Compose Multiplatform if sharing interface code is a goal.
- Select the web target for the project’s needs. Compare Kotlin/JS and Kotlin/Wasm against browser integration requirements and the dependencies you need to use.
- Account for platform-specific work. Shared code does not remove the need to handle platform APIs and web-specific behavior where they differ.
- Evaluate the team and project, not a blanket promise. Kotlin, Swift, and web experience—and the architecture already in place—affect the trade-offs. The cited materials do not establish a universal cost or performance winner.
What the claim does—and does not—establish
Kotlin Multiplatform can let Android, iOS, and web applications share Kotlin source. Kotlin/JS can compile that source for a JavaScript website, and Compose Multiplatform can be considered when UI sharing is also desired. Those capabilities do not establish that every mobile app shares code with its website, that all interfaces are shared, or that a KMP architecture automatically improves speed or lowers cost. The examples above are attributed vendor case studies, not independent comparative benchmarks.
