Start by identifying which mixer is unavailable, how your headset connects, and whether its own controls manage the game/chat balance. Then follow the setup guidance for your exact headset model.
First identify which chat mixer is unavailable
Xbox uses similar labels in two places. The Guide’s Headset chat mixer adjusts game audio relative to chat audio, according to Xbox’s headset information. A separate Chat mixer appears in the audio settings path described by headset-maker Nacon. Check the exact label and location before changing settings.

- Note whether the greyed-out control is in the Guide’s Audio panel or in Settings.
- Record your Xbox model, headset model, and connection method.
- Determine whether the issue involves Xbox party chat, in-game voice chat, or both, and note any warning shown on screen.
- Check whether the headset has a game/chat dial, wheel, or other balance control.
Check the headset’s game/chat controls
If your headset has its own balance control, consult its manual and confirm the mix is not set entirely to chat. For the headset setup covered in its support article, Nacon advises checking that Game/chat mix is not set all the way to Chat. This is manufacturer-specific guidance, not a universal setting for all Xbox headsets. Nacon’s instructions were updated April 8, 2025.
Check the console Chat mixer setting only if your headset’s instructions call for it
Nacon’s guidance for the setup covered by its article is to open the Xbox Guide and go to Profile > Settings > General > Volume & audio output > Chat mixer, then select Do nothing so the headset can control the game/chat balance. Menu labels and behavior may differ by model or software version. Verify the current manual for your headset before applying this instruction; do not treat “Do nothing” as a general fix for every greyed-out mixer.

Separate chat-routing issues from mixer availability
A mixer that is unavailable and voice chat that does not work are not necessarily the same problem. If the control is available but party or in-game chat is not behaving as expected, check the headset’s audio controls and the relevant chat mode separately. A Microsoft Community discussion also mentions communication or privacy options and switching back from Discord voice to Xbox party chat, but that is community advice—not confirmation that privacy settings or Discord cause the greyed-out mixer. For account restrictions or mode-specific behavior, consult Xbox Support.
Escalate with the setup details support needs
If the relevant controls remain unavailable after you have checked the model-specific instructions, contact Xbox or the headset maker with a concise description of the setup. Include:

The available guidance does not establish a universal reset procedure or prove that the console or headset has failed. Check the setup and support path for your existing device before considering replacement hardware.
