Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) runs desktop operating systems or applications on centrally managed computing resources and streams each interactive session to a user’s endpoint. A successful deployment is not just a desktop service: it depends on workload fit, identity, network connectivity, storage, licensing, security, and ongoing operations. VDI can centralize management and enable remote access, but it does not automatically make desktops cheaper, safer, or easier to run.
What is virtual desktop infrastructure?
VDI delivers desktops or applications from computing resources managed by an organization, a cloud provider, or a combination of the two. The endpoint—such as a laptop, desktop, or thin-client computer—displays the session and sends user input; the desktop workload runs elsewhere.

How does VDI work?
A VDI service connects the user, their identity, the desktop workload, and the resources that workload needs. In Microsoft’s Azure reference architecture, those parts include host pools and session hosts, endpoint devices, identity services, network connectivity, storage, and monitoring. A typical Azure design may use hub-and-spoke networking, ExpressRoute, Microsoft Entra ID and Active Directory Domain Services, Azure Files or Azure NetApp Files, and Log Analytics. Other platforms arrange these responsibilities differently.

- Compute: Hosts run desktop sessions or applications. Their capacity and configuration must match the workload and expected concurrent use.
- Identity and access: Directory and identity services authenticate users and govern access to desktops and data.
- Network: Users need reliable, controlled paths to the hosted session and its dependent services.
- Storage: The design must account for operating-system images, application data, and user data.
- Endpoints: Users connect through suitable devices. A thin-client computer is one option, not a VDI requirement; endpoint choice should reflect peripheral, management, and user needs.
- Operations: Monitoring, host management, scaling, and security configuration are part of the service, not optional extras.
In a Citrix implementation on Azure, control-plane and resource-location choices add their own design and operating responsibilities. AWS WorkSpaces Core likewise requires a control plane supplied either by a technology partner or managed by the customer.
Which desktop delivery model fits?
“Virtual desktop” can mean different service models. The distinction between shared capacity, published applications, and a dedicated desktop per user affects how resources are assigned and what the organization must manage. No model is universally cheaper or better; fit depends on applications, user patterns, licensing, and how continuously desktops must be available.

| Model | What users receive | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) | Microsoft’s Azure service supports multisession Windows desktops and published applications. | Assess whether users can share host capacity, which applications need delivery, and how capacity will track demand. |
| Windows 365 | Microsoft automatically creates an individual Cloud PC for each assigned user. | Evaluate a dedicated desktop model against user needs, licensing, and the required availability pattern. |
| Other VDI or partner-managed services | Delivery and management arrangements vary by platform and provider. | Establish who operates the control plane, infrastructure, identity integration, and support processes. |
Microsoft’s architecture overview explains the AVD and Windows 365 distinction. Do not assume that all cloud-hosted desktops use the same architecture or are operated by the same party.
What should you evaluate before choosing a platform?
Compare candidates against the actual users and applications, then identify which organization or provider owns each technical and operational layer. A shortlist should address these questions:

- Workload: Which applications and user groups are in scope? Do applications depend on particular operating systems, peripherals, graphics, or session behavior? Validate compatibility and performance with representative workloads; the cited architecture guidance does not establish a universal benchmark.
- Desktop model: Do users need published applications, shared or pooled desktops, or an individually assigned desktop?
- Identity and network: Which directory, tenant, domain, connectivity, and access-control arrangements must integrate with the service?
- Data and resilience: Where must user data live, and what backup and recovery arrangements are required?
- Control plane and operations: Who provisions, scales, monitors, updates, secures, and supports the service? For AWS WorkSpaces Core, confirm that a partner or customer-managed control plane is available, along with the required pixel-streaming protocol and directory integration.
- Licensing and total cost: Check user access rights, infrastructure consumption, any partner software, and the usage pattern. Avoid comparing headline prices that assume different workloads or entitlements.
- Security: Define identity controls, network access, endpoint policies, permissions, and monitoring rather than treating central hosting as security by itself.
What does VDI cost, and how does licensing affect it?
There is no single universal VDI price. For Azure Virtual Desktop, Microsoft separates user access rights from Azure infrastructure consumption. Infrastructure costs can include session-host virtual machines, operating-system and data storage, network bandwidth, and shared resources. Actual costs vary with VM size, region, storage, usage, and deployment design; compute is often a major cost element. Microsoft identifies autoscaling as one way to align host capacity with demand, but savings depend on how the environment is configured and used.
Microsoft lists eligible Windows and Microsoft 365 licenses for internal users. External commercial users have a separate per-user access-pricing route. Verify the current eligibility rules and the specific users and workloads in scope rather than assuming an existing subscription covers every case.

AWS WorkSpaces partner pricing offers monthly and hourly billing options, and WorkSpaces pricing excludes partner-solution licensing. AWS also distinguishes preset bundles from managed instances: bundles provide predefined configurations, while managed instances give customers or partners more control over operating system, instance type, and storage. These are platform-specific options, not directly comparable with Azure costs without matching the workload and licensing assumptions.
What does AWS WorkSpaces Core require?
WorkSpaces Core is not a complete, self-operating VDI control plane by itself. AWS states that customers need either a technology partner’s control plane or their own, a pixel-streaming protocol, and appropriate directory integration. Windows desktop deployments also require eligible bring-your-own-license (BYOL) licensing. Confirm the current requirements for the intended deployment before selecting it.

How should you plan security and day-to-day operations?
Centralized workloads can make some controls easier to manage, but they do not secure themselves. Microsoft’s Zero Trust guidance applies security and governance principles to Azure Virtual Desktop; the practical work still includes configuring identity, network access, endpoint protections, permissions, host management, and monitoring.
Plan host sizing, scaling, monitoring, and security together. Microsoft points to VM sizing guidance, autoscale, security recommendations, and monitoring practices for Azure Virtual Desktop. Inventory applications and user groups, estimate concurrent use, identify data locations and dependencies, then test user experience under representative workloads before broad deployment.
Platform requirements can change. Citrix publishes version-sensitive requirements for its DaaS components, so check the current supported Virtual Delivery Agent (VDA), operating system, and host configuration for the planned environment rather than treating a compatibility listing as permanent.

What to verify before making a decision
- Document user groups, applications, peripherals, session patterns, concurrency, and availability needs.
- Choose the delivery model—published apps, shared or pooled desktops, or dedicated desktops—based on those needs.
- Map identity, network paths, storage, endpoint requirements, and data-residency constraints.
- Assign ownership for the control plane, infrastructure, updates, monitoring, security, and support.
- Validate current licensing eligibility and estimate both access rights and consumption costs for the relevant region and usage pattern.
- Run a representative pilot, measure user experience, and test operational and recovery processes before expanding.
