The iPhone Duo’s foldable screen makes one device serve as both a phone and a small tablet, but it comes with compromises: a visible crease, an unproven hinge, Touch ID instead of Face ID, a thick and heavy folded form, and camera features missing from Apple’s Pro line. At its announced U.S. starting price of $1,999, the key question is whether that larger screen is worth those trade-offs.
Apple announced the Duo on September 9, 2026, with U.S. preorders scheduled for October 16 and availability for October 23. Those dates had not arrived when the launch coverage cited here was published, so the observations below are early impressions and announced specifications—not a long-term review. Apple’s announcement and launch-event hands-ons describe what the device is like at first; neither establishes how it will hold up after months or years of use.

Is the iPhone Duo’s crease still visible?
Yes. Early observers could see the crease in certain lighting, although Macworld and MacRumors describe it as less prominent than on some rival foldables. That is a first-look observation, not evidence about how the screen will look after extended use. MacRumors cautions that repeated opening and closing may make foldable creases more visible; no cited source establishes whether that will happen to the Duo over time. MacRumors’ event hands-on records what was visible at launch, not a wear test.
Will the hinge hold up over years of folding?
That remains unknown. Apple describes the hinge as precision-engineered for smooth movement, but a manufacturer’s design description cannot show whether a hinge will become stiff, loose or noisy—or fail—after years of use. With U.S. availability still in the future at the time of launch coverage, there was no extended-use evidence to settle the question.

Apple’s hardware engineering vice president Kate Bergeron also discussed a replaceable cover layer over the folding screen. As reported by Tom’s Guide, Bergeron said: “It’s actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer, that you can peel off that layer and get a new one.” The report does not establish replacement pricing by region. Tom’s Guide’s interview report describes the layer, but does not answer what replacement will cost.
Is Touch ID a dealbreaker if you use Face ID?
The Duo uses Touch ID in its side button rather than Face ID; Apple says users can also unlock it with Apple Watch. Apple’s announcement confirms the authentication options. Whether the change is a drawback depends on your habits: people who prefer fingerprint recognition may welcome it, while those used to looking at their phone to unlock it may find the different workflow inconvenient.
Is the iPhone Duo too thick or heavy to carry?
Macworld reports a weight of 254 g, with thickness of 11.3 mm when closed and 5.2 mm when unfolded. The slim open profile is appealing for a large-screen device, but the folded thickness can make it less convenient in a pocket or case than a conventional phone. Macworld’s launch-era opinion piece treats those measurements as a portability trade-off, not a reason every buyer will find the device uncomfortable.

Do the cameras justify the price?
The Duo has two rear cameras, not the full camera set described for Apple’s Pro models. MacRumors reports a 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera and a 48-megapixel Ultra Wide, with no telephoto lens; its 2× zoom is a crop from the main camera rather than a separate telephoto camera. Macworld also notes the absence of variable aperture, ProRAW and spatial photo and video capture. MacRumors’ hands-on and Macworld’s assessment identify these omissions; they do not establish that all Duo photos are poor.
If optical zoom or those Pro camera features are central to your photography, the omissions are meaningful. If you mainly take everyday photos and value the folding screen more, the camera list alone may not decide the purchase.
Can the large screen replace an iPhone and iPad?
The format’s clearest benefit is having a conventional phone-sized outer screen and a larger screen in one device. Apple lists a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display. That can suit someone who wants more room for reading, viewing or working without carrying a separate tablet. Apple’s announcement gives the display sizes.

The software supports two apps side by side, but MacRumors found that the panes could not be resized: each occupied half the display. Apps can adapt to the open, closed and half-folded positions, but the early hands-on indicates that multitasking flexibility is not unlimited. MacRumors’ hands-on describes both the adaptable layouts and the fixed split.

Macworld puts the launch-era U.S. starting price at $1,999 and argues that an iPhone 18 Pro plus an iPad mini bought separately can cost less. That comparison is from Macworld’s September 10, 2026 article; prices depend on models and configurations and can change, so it is not a current like-for-like quote. Macworld’s comparison is best read as a value question: how much is it worth to combine the phone and larger screen in one foldable?

MacRumors reports the launch-era U.S. price range as $1,999 for 256 GB to $3,199 for 2 TB. Its event hands-on gives the capacity range. Both figures are launch-era prices, not a guarantee of current pricing or availability.
Are the colors and accessories a concern?
Apple announced two finishes: star white and night sky. That limited choice may matter if color is part of your purchase decision, though it does not change the device’s function. Apple also said the Duo would support Apple Pencil with USB-C later in 2026 for notes, sketches and document markup. Because that support was announced for a later date, it should not be treated as available until Apple confirms rollout and compatibility.
