Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1: Faster Internet app makes it straightforward to switch to Cloudflare DNS or enable WARP on an Android phone—but those options solve different problems. Use DNS-only mode when you want encrypted DNS; use WARP when you want more device traffic sent through Cloudflare. Neither guarantees faster internet or fixes every connection problem, and Android 9 and later already offer a built-in Private DNS setting for encrypted DNS.
What Cloudflare’s Android app can—and cannot—do
The app provides access to Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1 DNS resolver and its WARP traffic tunnel. It is a convenient way to change those settings across networks, but it is not a general repair tool for weak Wi-Fi, a broken router, or an outage from your internet provider. The best starting point is to identify whether you want encrypted DNS or a broader traffic tunnel.

Cloudflare recommends the app for Android and says it automatically configures the phone to use 1.1.1.1 across networks. Its documented default is WARP, so check the selected mode rather than assuming the app is DNS-only. See Cloudflare’s Android setup guide.

Choose DNS-only or WARP based on the problem

In DNS-only mode, DNS requests are sent to Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1 resolver using encryption through DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) or DNS-over-TLS (DoT), depending on the selected mode. WARP covers more than DNS, but Cloudflare says websites see a Cloudflare IP representing the user’s approximate location; it does not promise that you can choose a country or city. Set up the app or use Android’s built-in Private DNS
Use the 1.1.1.1 app
- Install Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1: Faster Internet app from Google Play.
- Open it and accept the terms.
- Choose the mode that matches your goal. The documented default is WARP; select DNS-only if you only want encrypted DNS.
- Toggle the service on. If prompted, approve installation of the VPN profile required for the selected mode.
- Check that the app shows it as connected. If an app or network stops working, turn the mode off temporarily to determine whether it is involved.
Set Private DNS on Android 9 or later
Android 9 and later include a Private DNS setting for encrypted DNS. Menu names can vary by phone manufacturer and Android version; look in Settings for “Private DNS.” Choose the provider hostname option and enter Cloudflare’s documented hostname for the ordinary resolver: one.one.one.one. This changes DNS handling, not the routing of all device traffic.
Cloudflare also documents optional 1.1.1.1 for Families hostnames: security.cloudflare-dns.com is intended to block malware, while family.cloudflare-dns.com is intended to block malware and adult content. These are DNS filtering choices, not broader content controls for every connection or app. Follow the Android-specific instructions in Cloudflare’s setup documentation if menu labels differ.

Fix captive-portal trouble on public Wi-Fi
Some public Wi-Fi networks require you to open a sign-in page before granting internet access. Cloudflare warns that manually setting DNS with static IP addresses on older Android versions can prevent those captive portals from working.

- Reconnect to the public Wi-Fi and complete its sign-in page.
- After the network grants access, restore your preferred DNS setting if it does not disrupt the connection.
If the sign-in page still does not appear, leave the custom DNS setting off while diagnosing the hotspot; the network itself may also be the source of the problem.

Know WARP’s limits before leaving it on
- Speed is not guaranteed. Cloudflare says encryption can trade some throughput for privacy, and some users may notice a slowdown. WARP is not a promise of faster service.
- Location-dependent apps may behave differently. Streaming, music, radio, or game services that rely on location may not work properly while WARP is active.
- WebRTC can bypass WARP. Cloudflare says WARP does not proxy WebRTC traffic, so an app or site using WebRTC for a video call or game can expose the user’s IP address.
- WARP is not a country-selection tool or a claim of full anonymity. Its IP address represents an approximate location, and the WebRTC limitation is one reason not to treat it as complete IP protection.
For a location-sensitive service or a broken captive portal, turn WARP off while you test whether the service works without the tunnel. Cloudflare’s FAQ covers these compatibility and performance qualifications.
