These conservative targets are based on YouTube’s recommended H.264 live bitrates with room for network variation; they are not guarantees of a stable connection. The fact that the video is prerecorded or intended for children does not change the bandwidth calculation: the stream’s resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate set the baseline.
Upload speed targets by stream quality
YouTube’s recommended H.264 live bitrates are the stream data rates an encoder sends to YouTube—not the speed of a broadband plan and not the bitrate of a video file uploaded in advance. YouTube also advises leaving room beyond the stream bitrate; its network guidance says, “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” The practical targets below round up to avoid treating a narrow margin as sufficient.

The targets are derived from YouTube’s guidance, not independent measurements or a guarantee for any particular ISP. YouTube does not define a single arithmetic formula for its “20%” recommendation. The figures above are deliberately rounded upward to leave practical headroom. The recommendations are for H.264; requirements can differ with codec, resolution, frame rate, and the bitrate selected. Why a prerecorded 24/7 stream still needs live-stream upload capacity
Once a prerecorded video is being sent as a YouTube Live broadcast, the encoder or streaming service transmits a live feed at the chosen stream bitrate. The fact that the source video already exists does not reduce that outbound live data rate. A 24/7 schedule does not mean multiplying Mbps by 24: bitrate is a rate, not a daily data total. What the longer schedule changes is the importance of keeping the encoder, power, network, and recovery plan working continuously.

Do not use video-file upload settings for the live connection
Uploading a video file to YouTube and sending a live feed are different tasks. YouTube’s separate file-upload encoding recommendations include, for example, 8 Mbps for 1080p standard-frame-rate SDR uploads. That figure describes a video-file encoding recommendation; it does not tell you how much internet upload a live encoder needs. Use the live bitrate table above to plan the broadcast. Check the upload that will actually reach the encoder
A plan’s advertised speed is not necessarily the sustained upload available to the broadcasting device. Download speed is not the relevant measure, and other household or workplace activity can consume the capacity the stream needs. YouTube notes that shared connections can limit available bandwidth and recommends testing upload capacity, testing the stream, and monitoring stream health.

- Choose the output first. Set the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and encoder bitrate. For H.264, use YouTube’s live guidance as the starting point; do not assume the same bitrate applies to every codec.
- Test upload at the encoder’s location. Run an upload speed test with the computer or streaming device connected as it will be during the broadcast. Test when other users and devices are using the network as they normally would.
- Compare sustained available upload with the target. Leave the recommended margin rather than matching the stream bitrate exactly. If results fluctuate or the connection is shared, a higher target or lower stream bitrate may be more reliable.
- Run a representative test stream. Before committing to a continuous schedule, test with representative audio and movement. YouTube recommends a speed test and a test stream; consult its encoder guidance and streaming tips.
- Watch stream health in Live Control Room. Look for warnings or interruptions while the test is running. A brief speed-test result alone cannot establish that a connection will remain stable around the clock.
If upload capacity is short or unstable
- Lower the output setting. Choose a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate that fits the upload capacity you can sustain. Re-test after changing settings.
- Reduce competing network use. Pause large uploads or other bandwidth-heavy activity during the stream where possible, and account for the fact that shared users may affect available capacity.
- Improve the encoder’s connection to the network. A wired connection may avoid some local wireless variability when practical, but it cannot raise the upload speed supplied by the ISP or guarantee uninterrupted service.
- Plan for outages, not just average speed. A 24/7 run has to tolerate disruptions over time. Keep an eye on stream health and decide how the broadcast will recover if connectivity or the stream itself is interrupted.

Children’s content does not change the network target
The upload-speed recommendation comes from the live stream’s technical settings, not its intended audience. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish a special upload speed for children’s programming. Separately, make sure the channel and stream comply with YouTube’s rules for the content and its audience; adequate bandwidth does not determine whether a stream is eligible for features or monetization.
