If it keeps moving, OBS is still receiving audio and the likely problem is monitoring or your computer’s listening route. If it stops, check whether YouTube playback itself paused or whether OBS lost its capture source. The right fix depends on whether YouTube is playing in a regular browser, being captured by OBS, or running inside an OBS Browser Source.
Identify where YouTube is playing
“OBS loses focus” can describe different setups, and they do not share one guaranteed fix. Before changing settings, identify which of these matches your stream:

- Regular browser: YouTube radio plays in Chrome, Brave, or another browser. OBS may not capture that browser’s audio at all.
- Captured browser or display: YouTube plays in a regular browser, while an OBS Window Capture, Display Capture, or audio source supplies the stream audio.
- OBS Browser Source: The YouTube player is embedded directly in an OBS scene. This is not the same as capturing a separate Chrome window.
Use the OBS mixer to locate the failure
- Start the YouTube radio and make sure the intended OBS scene is active.
- Watch the relevant channel in the OBS audio mixer while switching focus away from OBS.
- If the meter continues moving while you hear silence, audio is reaching OBS; investigate monitoring and the output device.
- If the meter stops moving, investigate the browser/player or the OBS source and device supplying the audio.
The meter indicates source input level. OBS’s monitoring control is separate: it plays a source through the monitoring device configured in OBS. A moving meter therefore does not prove that sound is reaching your headphones or speakers. See the OBS audio monitoring documentation.

Check the listening route
- Check which device OBS uses for audio monitoring, and confirm that the device is connected and selected as your computer’s active output.
- Check the operating system’s output volume and the volume for OBS specifically. Individual application and system sliders can affect what you hear.
- Test with the actual headphones or speakers you intend to use. If OBS’s meter moves but another application also has no sound, the issue may be outside OBS.
If the meter stops moving
Confirm the intended OBS source is active
Make sure the source supplying audio belongs to the active scene and is not muted. If you use a device-specific source, confirm that it refers to the intended device. OBS supports scene-level Audio Input/Output Capture sources on Windows and macOS; on Linux, the corresponding options use ALSA or PulseAudio. The available options depend on your platform. Avoid capturing the same device twice
If you add an Audio Input or Audio Output Capture source to a scene, check Settings → Audio for a global selection of the same device. OBS warns that selecting the same device globally and in a scene can create echo. Choose one routing method for that device rather than enabling both.
Check whether the browser itself stopped playing
When YouTube runs in a regular browser, verify that the player is still playing after you switch windows. If playback stops before OBS receives audio, changing OBS’s capture source will not restart the player. Background playback behavior can vary by browser, operating system, and setup; the available documentation here does not establish a universal focus-loss rule.

Special case: a Windows 11 browser-capture freeze
A GitHub issue opened June 13, 2026 reports a narrow problem involving Windows 11, OBS 32.1.2, Chrome or Brave, and Window Capture or Display Capture: playback reportedly froze after resizing the browser or bringing it forward. The reporter said that using a D3D9 ANGLE backend setting or capturing a different window avoided the problem on that system. This is an unresolved user report, not an official OBS diagnosis or a fix established for other setups. See the issue report.
Consider those workarounds only if your setup closely matches the reported conditions. Do not change graphics-backend settings on the assumption that they solve every case of audio stopping when OBS loses focus.

Special case: an OBS Browser Source
A separate report describes stuttering of Browser Source video or animations when OBS loses focus on Windows 11, and alleges process throttling. It is a user report, not proof that an audio-only YouTube radio stream has the same cause. Treat an embedded player as a distinct path from a separately captured Chrome or Brave window.
