To make a 24/7 YouTube radio livestream with one still image, send YouTube a continuous audio-and-video feed from an encoder: use the image as the video source and your radio audio as the audio source. YouTube provides the stream URL and key in Live Control Room; the encoder sends the feed, and you go live from YouTube when its preview is ready. The key planning issue is that a single stream lasting more than 12 hours may not be archived at all, so plan separately for continuous listening, DVR, and saved recordings.
Before you start
You need a YouTube channel eligible for live streaming, an encoder capable of sending your audio and still image, an image and audio source you have the rights to use, and an upload connection that can sustain your chosen settings. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Check the current YouTube live-streaming eligibility guidance before preparing a broadcast.

- Audio: a continuous radio feed, playlist, or other audio source available to the encoder. Confirm that it plays for the full session and does not depend on a file or device that will stop unexpectedly.
- Visual: one still image in a format your encoder accepts. Use artwork you own or are licensed to broadcast; a static image does not make the audio or artwork rights-free.
- Encoder: software or a service that sends the audio/video feed to YouTube. For a computer-based setup, YouTube has general encoder instructions and OBS maintains a Help Portal; the exact still-image and looping-audio controls depend on your encoder and its current version.
- Reliable upload: choose settings your connection and computer can sustain continuously, not just briefly.
Set up the still-image broadcast
- Verify live access. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and follow the prompts to enable or schedule a stream. Eligibility and activation details are in YouTube’s getting-started guidance.
- Create or schedule a stream. In Live Control Room, create or schedule the broadcast and select the encoder workflow. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown by YouTube. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to that stream.
- Build the encoder scene. Add the still image as the video source and the radio feed as the audio source. Arrange the image to fill the frame without unwanted cropping or borders, and confirm that the intended audio source is selected. Encoder interfaces differ, so use the current guide for your chosen encoder rather than relying on a universal menu path; YouTube’s encoder overview is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Enter YouTube’s connection details. In the encoder’s streaming settings, choose RTMPS where available and enter the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. Do not paste the key into a public document, screenshot, or chat.
- Configure and test the feed. Select a resolution and bitrate the connection can sustain, then test with the actual audio path and final scene. Check the preview in Live Control Room and resolve any stream-health warnings before starting the public broadcast.
- Start the encoder, then go live. Begin sending the feed from the encoder. Depending on the workflow, YouTube displays a preview before you press Go live in Live Control Room. Confirm that the still image appears and the audio is audible before leaving the broadcast unattended.
- Monitor the event. Keep an eye on Live Control Room’s stream health and the encoder’s audio and connection status. If reliable saved footage matters, also run a local recording and verify that it is being written successfully.
Encoder settings for a still image and radio audio
A still image reduces visual complexity, but the encoder still sends a video stream along with audio. YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance recommends RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR bitrate encoding; and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. It lists stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps in its advanced recommendations.
| Setting | Practical choice | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Protocol | RTMPS where supported | Use the stream URL YouTube provides for the encoder workflow. |
| Video codec | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, as supported by the encoder and workflow | Choose a codec your encoder can sustain and YouTube accepts for the stream. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 | Confirm the audio feed reaches the encoder and stays present throughout the broadcast. |
| Rate control | CBR | Set a bitrate appropriate to the resolution and the real upload connection. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds | Check the encoder’s keyframe or GOP setting. |
| Stereo audio | 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps in YouTube’s advanced recommendations | Match the encoder’s audio output to the recommendation where available. |
Use YouTube’s current resolution- and codec-specific bitrate table rather than copying one bitrate into every setup. Run a speed test, leave headroom for connection variation, and test the actual final configuration. YouTube recommends a preflight test with audio and movement comparable to the real stream and monitoring stream health during the event. For a static-image radio show, the test should exercise the real audio path and final scene; you do not need to add movement to the actual programming just to satisfy a test. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

Plan for 24/7 operation, archives, and DVR
One continuous session
A single session may keep the radio stream available continuously, but do not assume YouTube will save a complete recording of a 24/7 broadcast. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the recording matters, run a local backup or plan shorter sessions and verify each resulting archive. Details are in YouTube’s archive guidance.
DVR is separate from the saved archive
DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume during a live event; it is not the same as the recording available after the broadcast. YouTube warns that rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, and viewers cannot seek to a point before the stream began. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Choose a session plan around what matters
- If uninterrupted listening is the priority, a continuous session may suit the schedule, but accept the archive and DVR limitations above.
- If a complete YouTube archive or dependable rewind matters, consider dividing the schedule into shorter sessions. YouTube’s cited guidance establishes the 12-hour archive and DVR caveats; it does not prescribe a restart schedule, so choose session lengths that fit your programming and verify the results.
- If you need a backup regardless of YouTube’s archive behavior, record locally and check storage capacity, file rotation, and that recordings are actually being created.
Copyright and channel rules
All live content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Make sure you have permission for the music, recordings, artwork, and any other material in the broadcast. A still image does not prevent a copyright claim against the audio. Review YouTube’s live-streaming guidance and the terms that apply to your content and channel.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No preview in Live Control Room | The encoder is not sending, or the stream URL/key or connection settings are incorrect. | Check that the encoder is started, recheck the URL and key against Live Control Room, and confirm RTMPS settings where supported. Keep the key private. |
| Video appears but there is no sound | The wrong audio source is selected, muted, or not reaching the encoder. | Check the encoder’s active audio source and meters, then listen to the actual preview before going live. |
| Stream health reports instability or the feed disconnects | The upload connection or encoder cannot sustain the selected settings. | Run a speed test, reduce bitrate or resolution within YouTube’s current recommendations, and retest the complete setup before restarting. |
| Stream is live but the archive is missing or incomplete | A very long session may not be captured; YouTube warns sessions exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. | Check the archive after the event. For future broadcasts, use a local recording or plan shorter sessions rather than relying on one continuous archive. |
| Viewers cannot rewind as expected | DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. | Explain the live DVR limitation to viewers and consider shorter sessions if rewind is important. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not leave an encoder computer running, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube stream live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded material in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
