Keep music separate from narration, set its level carefully, and listen to the outgoing mix through a complete transition before relying on it in a continuous stream.
1. Choose music you are allowed to use
Start with original music, music demonstrably in the public domain, or a written license that covers your intended use. Check that the permission applies to live broadcasting and, if you retain the stream, its archive. Confirm territory, attribution, monetization, duration, and any Content ID allowlisting requirements. “Royalty-free” and “free download” do not by themselves establish permission for every use.

YouTube’s guidance defines safe music as music in the public domain or music used with permission from the copyright owner. It recommends the YouTube Audio Library for longer videos and advises checking third-party license terms. Keep the license or other rights evidence with the track details so you can refer to it if a claim arises.

YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility on the provider to have the necessary worldwide rights for live content, including music licensing rights. The rights needed for a particular stream depend on the composition, sound recording, territories, broadcast, and whether the stream is retained; consult the rights holder or a qualified local adviser if those terms are unclear.

2. Prepare the music and keep it separate from the stories
Choose a track or playlist that suits the transitions and prepare it as a distinct audio source from the story narration. That separation makes it easier to control the music level, schedule it for gaps, and identify whether a problem is coming from the music or the episode audio.
Decide how each transition should work: for example, whether music starts immediately after an episode, fades in, plays for a fixed interval, and fades or stops before the next story. These are production choices, not features guaranteed by every application. Confirm that your chosen playout software can implement the timing you need.

3. Add the background audio source
Streamlabs example
Streamlabs’ documented example uses a Background Audio panel to select one or more local audio tracks. The panel provides playback, volume, and queue controls. Interface labels may change, and other streaming or playout applications use different names and workflows.
- In Streamlabs, open the Background Audio panel.
- Select the local track or tracks you want to use.
- Use the playback controls to start or pause music, adjust its volume, and inspect the queue.
This example documents basic audio selection and control; it does not establish that Streamlabs or another application can automatically detect when an episode ends and play music only during the gap.

- Singable lyrics and catchy melodies are set to a contemporary beat
- These tunes are a fun way to teach children Basic concepts
- Parents and teachers use this collection to teach concepts such as colors and numbers, as well as friendship and cooperation

4. Schedule music for the gaps
Use the actual playlist boundaries, cues, or automation available in your chosen playout system to start music after one story and stop or fade it before the next begins. Do not assume the software can infer episode boundaries. If the application lacks the required automation, arrange the transitions in the playlist or prepare the program so the music is already placed between the stories.
Validate the behavior with the actual episode files and playlist order. Check what happens when an episode runs longer or shorter than expected, a track ends, or playback is restarted. The reviewed Streamlabs workflow documents a queue and playback controls, not episode-triggered gap automation.

5. Set the level and check the complete outgoing mix
Adjust the music so it is audible in the gap without masking narration if tracks overlap at a transition. Listen to the program output—not just the music source—in a private test or preview route. Play through a full story-to-music-to-story transition and check for:
- Music starting too early or continuing under narration unintentionally.
- Abrupt starts, stops, or volume jumps.
- Unexpected silence between a story and the music, or between the music and the next story.
- Clipping or distortion in the combined program mix.
- A queue or playlist that stops before the next episode is ready.
6. Respond to YouTube copyright checks
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream when it detects such content. A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption: YouTube says creators using licensed third-party music should ask the rights holder to add their channel to its Content ID allowlist. Arrange that before depending on uninterrupted transmission, and address any YouTube warning rather than assuming that a license alone will prevent a match.

If you retain the live stream, consider archive rights as well as live-broadcast rights. YouTube also notes that archived live streams can receive claims after the broadcast.
7. Set the audience designation accurately
If the broadcast is directed to children, determine whether it should be designated as made for kids and apply the appropriate audience setting. The YouTube Live Streaming API includes a made-for-kids designation, but whether a particular channel or stream qualifies depends on its content and circumstances; the setting should not be guessed from the fact that stories are involved.
YouTube says made-for-kids settings disable or restrict some features, including live chat. Personalized ads are disabled on made-for-kids live streams, although contextual ads may appear. Plan the stream around those feature and advertising conditions.
