The encoder must produce an audiovisual stream, so plan a visual component as well as the audio. First confirm that the station’s rights allow retransmission on YouTube and that the feed is technically compatible; neither can be assumed from the station’s internet-radio availability alone.
Before you start: confirm rights, feed details and channel eligibility
Get permission for the YouTube retransmission
A station’s permission to operate an internet radio service does not automatically establish permission to retransmit its programming on YouTube. India’s Copyright Act, 1957 defines broadcast to include rebroadcast, and its provisions include a statutory-licensing route for certain broadcasting of published literary and musical works and sound recordings. That does not determine whether a particular station or channel may use that route, or whether its existing agreements cover YouTube. Ask the station and relevant rights holders to confirm the permissions, catalogue, territories and platform uses covered. Seek qualified legal advice for the jurisdictions involved. Read the Copyright Act, 1957 and the Copyright Rules.

Ask the station for its technical specifications
Before choosing encoder settings, obtain the actual stream URL and details such as its format, codec and whether it requires authentication. Those particulars determine whether your encoder can ingest the feed directly or needs a compatible input or conversion step. No station endpoint or format is specified here, so there is no safe universal input configuration to give.
Check YouTube Live eligibility
YouTube Help says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. The same help page states limits of 10 active streams per channel and three active streams per stream key. These are YouTube’s published account limits, not recommendations for how many broadcasts to run; platform rules can change, so check the current YouTube live-streaming requirements before setup.

Set up the continuous stream with an encoder
- Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and create a stream or choose an existing one. Follow the selected workflow to obtain its server URL and stream key. Keep the key private; anyone who has it may be able to send video to that stream.
- Choose an encoder. YouTube supports streaming software as well as standalone hardware encoders. Select one that can accept the station’s actual feed and run for the operating period you need. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain that you enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the encoder. The official page lists the AJA HELO Plus as one hardware option, but a dedicated device is not required by the documented workflow. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Connect the authorized radio feed. Configure the encoder’s input with the station-provided URL and any required credentials or compatible input settings. If it cannot accept that source, you will need a suitable method to receive or convert it before YouTube can receive the outgoing stream. Confirm compatibility with the encoder’s documentation rather than assuming that every internet-radio URL works.
- Add video to the output. YouTube Live is an audiovisual stream. A static station image, visualizer or other visual treatment is an implementation choice; the cited YouTube instructions do not prescribe a radio-specific visual. Use imagery and branding you have permission to show.
- Enter YouTube’s connection details. In the encoder, set the server field to the YouTube Live server URL and enter the matching stream key. Check that the selected stream in Studio is the one associated with those details.
- Start the encoder and verify the preview. Confirm that audio is audible, the video is present, and the Live Control Room reports an incoming feed. Then start the broadcast using the controls for the stream workflow you selected. If the preview does not appear, troubleshoot the feed and connection before treating the broadcast as live.
Choose a continuity plan: one long event or recurring broadcasts
Do not assume one live event can run indefinitely
YouTube’s Live API documents an arrangement where one live-stream resource holds encoder settings and multiple live-broadcast resources can be bound to it; only one event is live at a time in that arrangement. This can support recurring broadcasts that reuse stream settings, but it does not establish the best event model for every radio channel or promise an indefinite single event. Plan recordings separately from live continuity
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The cited guidance does not confirm automatic archiving as one recording for streams longer than 12 hours. If retaining a recording matters, verify YouTube’s current behavior and make a recording or event-transition plan that does not depend on an unconfirmed archive.

Plan for operational interruptions
Continuous availability depends on the encoder continuing to send a usable feed. Decide who will notice a lost source, encoder stop or YouTube disconnect, and how the stream will be restarted. Protect and limit access to the stream key, and plan transitions between events if using recurring broadcasts. YouTube’s encoder workflow does not guarantee uninterrupted uptime or prescribe a monitoring system.

Troubleshooting a radio-to-YouTube stream
- No incoming preview in Live Control Room: Check that the encoder is running, the selected stream matches the entered server URL and key, and the network can reach YouTube. Re-enter the key carefully if needed, keeping it private.
- Encoder rejects the station URL or there is no audio: Verify the exact endpoint, format, authentication requirements and supported input types with the station and encoder documentation. Do not assume an arbitrary radio link is a compatible encoder input.
- Video appears but audio is missing: Check the encoder’s audio input routing and confirm that the station feed is actually being received. Verify the preview before starting or relying on the broadcast.
- The stream stops unexpectedly: Check whether the station feed, encoder or network connection stopped, then restore the source and reconnect through the Live Control Room. A recovery procedure and a person responsible for monitoring reduce the chance that an outage goes unnoticed; no uptime guarantee follows from YouTube’s setup guide.
- A stream key may have been exposed: Treat it as compromised and replace or reset it through the relevant YouTube stream controls, then update the encoder. Do not publish the key or include it in shared screenshots.
- The event ends or its archive is missing: Check whether the event was configured as a one-time or recurring broadcast and consult YouTube’s current archive guidance. Do not rely on automatic archiving for a stream lasting 12 hours or more.
