Lanterns sits at an unusual intersection: a murder investigation in rural America, a two-person police partnership and a mythology that reaches into intergalactic space. If you want the closest match to that combination, start with Watchmen. Choose The Expanse when the cosmic and political scale matters more than the Earthbound case. Fringe, Legion and For All Mankind are worthwhile when you want one specific ingredient—case-driven mystery, stranger superhero ideas or long-view speculative drama—rather than a replica of the show.
The recommendations below compare themes and character dynamics, not identical plots. They also separate what is established about Lanterns from critics’ descriptions and from the looser connections among the other series.

Why Lanterns is a distinctive comparison point
HBO Max’s March 5, 2026 press-room announcement describes Lanterns this way: “The series follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.” The announcement identifies it as a DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television production based on DC’s Green Lantern characters, with Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King as co-creators and Mundy as showrunner.

- Grounded crime or cosmic scope: Is the appeal the American setting and procedural texture, or the promise of a wider science-fiction mythology?
- Superhero mythology or science-fiction institutions: Would you rather stay near costumed-hero lore, or move toward political, scientific and historical structures?
- Partner dynamic or ensemble/long-view drama: Is the relationship between two investigators central, or are you comfortable with a broader cast and a longer time horizon?
DC’s July 29, 2026 trailer-era overview says the Earthbound story still draws on cosmic mythology, including ring constructs, alien settings and the Manhunters. Those are promotional overview details, not a complete description of every finished-season development.
Reviews add tonal context rather than official genre definitions. TechRadar characterizes the released series as a grounded rural crime drama with cosmic stakes, slow-burn plotting, police-procedural tendencies and a tense buddy-cop relationship. The Daily Beast describes a mystery that combines partner comedy and superhero-origin elements while shifting between time periods. Taken together, those descriptions explain why a viewer might want either another investigation, another superhero mythology or a larger speculative canvas.
The quick guide to your next series
| Series | Choose it when you want | How close the match is |
|---|---|---|
| Watchmen | A mystery unfolding inside an uneasy superhero world | Closest thematic match; different scale and partnership |
| The Expanse | Interplanetary scope, political tensions and competing interests | Strong cosmic-side match; not a rural murder procedural |
| Fringe | Case-driven investigation with a speculative science-fiction layer | Good mystery match; less evidence of a direct character or plot parallel |
| Legion | Superhero mythology handled in a stranger, more stylized way | Adjacent choice for viewers seeking unusual ideas |
| For All Mankind | Speculative drama with institutional and historical scope | Adjacent choice; farther from the partner-investigator format |
1. Watch Watchmen for mystery inside superhero mythology
Watchmen is the best first stop if the part of Lanterns that stayed with you was the idea of an investigation taking place in a world already shaped by superheroes. Its value here is structural and tonal: the mystery is not separate from the mythology. Social unease and questions about power are built into the setting, so solving a case also means figuring out what the world believes about its heroes and institutions.
What carries over from Lanterns
- A crime or mystery provides the forward motion instead of a purely episodic hero adventure.
- Superhero history changes the meaning of ordinary institutions and public life.
- The atmosphere is uneasy, encouraging you to treat background details as part of the story rather than decoration.
What does not carry over
This is not a substitute for the specific John Stewart–Hal Jordan setup, an intergalactic police partnership or the cosmic scale suggested by Green Lantern mythology. Pick it for the collision of investigation, hero lore and social tension—not because the plots are interchangeable.
2. Watch The Expanse for the larger science-fiction canvas
If the alien settings, ring constructs and wider mythology are what made you curious about Lanterns, The Expanse is the most useful change of scale. The comparison source highlights its interplanetary canvas, political tensions and competing interests. Those elements move the center of gravity away from a single Earthbound murder and toward the systems that make conflict inevitable across a populated solar environment.
Rank #2
The appeal for a Lanterns viewer
The Expanse treats science fiction as an argument about power as much as a setting. Institutions, factions and political interests shape what characters can do, which makes the show a natural follow-up for viewers who want the implications of a cosmic society rather than only the spectacle of alien worlds. It also gives you more room for world-building than a grounded mystery can provide.
The trade-off
You should not expect a duplicate of the American-heartland case or the same two-officer buddy dynamic. The recommendation is about breadth: choose it when “what happens across a contested interplanetary system?” interests you more than “who committed this local murder?”
3. Watch Fringe for case-driven science-fiction mystery
Fringe is the practical choice when your favorite part of Lanterns is the investigative engine with a speculative layer. The recommendation source names it as a case-driven science-fiction mystery, which makes it a better fit for viewers who want investigations to remain the organizing principle while the explanations become increasingly science-fictional.
How to decide
- Choose Fringe if you want each investigation to give you a concrete problem to follow.
- Choose it over The Expanse when procedural momentum matters more than interplanetary politics.
- Keep your expectations narrow: the available comparison establishes the case-and-speculation connection, not a close match in plot, partnership or superhero mythology.
In other words, Fringe matches one ingredient cleanly. It is a useful next series for the mystery-minded viewer, but not evidence that every structural feature of Lanterns will recur.
4. Watch Legion for stranger superhero science fiction
Legion belongs on the list for viewers who want to stay near superhero mythology while moving away from conventional police-procedural expectations. The comparison source presents it as a more unusual and stylized science-fiction option. That makes it a deliberate change of texture: instead of asking for another grounded investigation with cosmic stakes, you are asking what superhero storytelling can look like when it becomes formally and psychologically unfamiliar.

When it is the right pivot
Select Legion if the superhero-origin aspect of Lanterns interests you more than the murder case, or if you prefer a show that treats its speculative ideas as an experience rather than as background lore. It is also the better choice for viewers who want something less conventional after a slow-burn procedural.
When to choose something else
If your priority is clue-by-clue investigation, partner banter or a clearly explained institutional system, start with Watchmen, Fringe or The Expanse instead. The available comparison supports Legion as an adjacent recommendation, not a detailed one-to-one parallel.
5. Watch For All Mankind for speculative institutional drama
For All Mankind is the furthest recommendation from the Lanterns format, but it can satisfy a different reason for watching science fiction: the pleasure of seeing institutions, history and long-term consequences reshaped by a speculative premise. The comparison source includes it as an option for viewers seeking science-fiction drama with institutional and historical scope.
What this choice emphasizes
- Institutional change: The dramatic interest comes from organizations and societies adapting to altered possibilities.
- Historical scale: The story’s appeal is measured over a longer horizon than a single case.
- Speculative consequences: The science-fiction premise matters because it changes decisions, priorities and public life.
Choose it when you want the “what would this do to a society?” dimension of science fiction. Do not choose it expecting a close substitute for the Stewart–Jordan partnership or the Earthbound murder investigation; the connection is thematic and institutional rather than procedural.
Choose by the theme you want next
If you want the mystery to stay central
Start with Watchmen for a mystery embedded in superhero history. Move to Fringe if you want a more explicitly case-driven science-fiction approach. These are different kinds of investigation: the former emphasizes mythology and social unease, while the latter is presented primarily as speculative case work.

If you want more cosmic scale
Pick The Expanse. It is the clearest recommendation for interplanetary scope, political tension and competing interests. Its difference from Lanterns is exactly the reason to watch it: it expands the setting instead of returning you to a small-town murder.
If you want superhero ideas without another procedural
Try Legion for a stranger, more stylized treatment. Try Watchmen if you still want mystery and social tension to organize the story.
If you want institutions and history
Choose For All Mankind. It is an adjacent speculative drama for viewers who enjoy seeing systems evolve over time rather than following one tightly bounded investigation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the character dynamics differ
Lanterns is built around contrast between a new recruit and a veteran legend: John Stewart and Hal Jordan are both investigators, but they arrive with different levels of experience and status. TechRadar’s review calls the relationship a tense buddy-cop pairing, while The Daily Beast notes partner comedy alongside the mystery. That combination means the interpersonal story is not a side plot; the partnership is one of the ways the case is experienced.
The five alternatives distribute that dramatic weight differently:
Best Value
| Series | Primary relationship emphasis | Best for viewers who want |
|---|---|---|
| Watchmen | People navigating institutions and superhero history | Character tension shaped by social unease |
| The Expanse | Multiple interests operating within a political system | Ensemble conflict and competing agendas |
| Fringe | Investigators working through speculative cases | A partnership or team structure serving the mystery |
| Legion | Superhero identity approached through a more stylized lens | Unusual character perspective and mythology |
| For All Mankind | Individuals and institutions changing over an extended period | Long-view consequences rather than a single-case bond |
This is why “similar themes” is a more accurate promise than “just like Lanterns.” Each show preserves a different part of the experience: mystery, scale, mythology, speculative investigation or institutional change.

If you want to explore the material behind Lanterns, Green Lantern comic collections are the natural source-material option. The official HBO Max announcement confirms that the series is based on DC’s Green Lantern characters, and DC’s overview provides context for the broader mythology.
