The best PS5 game to play now is Sonic Frontiers if you want fast movement and a large space to explore. It is not a taxi-driving game or a conventional open world, however: Sega calls its structure an “Open-Zone” map. Sega’s upcoming Crazy Taxi: World Tour is officially described as high-speed action with open-city driving, and is scheduled for PS5 in 2027. That distinction matters when choosing a substitute.
What Sega has actually announced
Crazy Taxi: World Tour was announced by Sega on June 8, 2026, for release in 2027. The announced platforms are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. Sega calls it a “brand-new entry” in the Crazy Taxi series, so it should not be presented as a confirmed remake of the original.

The announcement’s description is specific: “Building on its signature high-speed action and open-city driving, this new installment delivers enhanced gameplay for an even more exhilarating experience.” PlayStation Blog describes the project as a large expansion of the original arcade driving game. Neither official description consulted for the announcement calls it an “open-world” game. Until Sega provides a more detailed map or systems breakdown, “open-city driving” is the accurate term.

That wording sets the right expectation. You are waiting for a game built around driving quickly through a city, rather than simply waiting for any game with a large map. A useful alternative should therefore be judged on four separate traits:
#1 Best Overall
- Stunning graphics and gameplay, explore the wild and striking lands around Mount Yotei on foot or horseback. Travel picturesque parts of northern Japan through grasslands, snowy ridges, fields of wildflowers, and more.
- Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
- An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
- Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.
- Movement: Is the main activity driving, or moving on foot?
- Pressure: Does the game revolve around short, timed arcade challenges or self-directed exploration?
- Roaming: Is the space a connected area that you can freely investigate?
- Purpose of speed: Is speed the central challenge, or just one way to reach discoveries and objectives?
No currently available PS5 title can be called a direct replacement for Crazy Taxi: World Tour on the evidence available here. The strongest Sega-published fit is Sonic Frontiers, because it combines rapid traversal with broad areas to explore.
The closest playable Sega match: Sonic Frontiers
What you get on PS5
Sega released Sonic Frontiers on November 8, 2022, and lists a PS5 version. Its product overview describes an “Open-Zone” map, high-speed gameplay, battles, puzzles, side quests and separate Cyber Space levels. A physical version is also listed, which makes the PS5 edition a straightforward choice if you prefer a disc rather than a download.
The open-zone design gives you room to move between activities instead of restricting every stage to a single linear route. Sonic’s speed is the defining way you cross that space, so the game can satisfy the immediate desire to move quickly through a large environment. The activities you encounter, though, are action-adventure and platforming challenges rather than passenger fares or traffic runs.

Where it matches the wait for Crazy Taxi
- Fast traversal: Rapid movement is built into ordinary exploration, not reserved for a single race mode.
- Large spaces: The Open-Zone structure supports wandering, route-finding and discovering optional activities.
- Short diversions: Puzzles, battles, side quests and Cyber Space levels break up travel in different ways.
- Sega connection: It is an official Sega game, so its tone and emphasis on momentum provide a closer company connection than an unrelated open-world title.
Where it does not match
Sonic Frontiers is an action-adventure platformer, not a driving game. You travel on foot as Sonic, fight enemies, solve environmental puzzles and complete quests. There is no evidence in the cited product overview that it reproduces Crazy Taxi’s fare-based objective, vehicle handling or arcade time pressure. Buying it specifically for taxi missions would create the wrong expectation.
The practical recommendation is therefore narrow but clear: choose Sonic Frontiers when your priority is speed plus exploration on PS5. Do not choose it as a mechanical substitute for driving passengers through a city.

How the games differ
| Game | Status | Primary movement | World description | Main appeal | How close to Crazy Taxi: World Tour? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crazy Taxi: World Tour | Announced for 2027 | Driving | Sega says “open-city driving”; open-world status not confirmed | High-speed arcade-style city driving | The target experience, not yet playable |
| Sonic Frontiers | Available on PS5 | On-foot high-speed movement | Sega’s “Open-Zone” map | Exploration, battles, puzzles, side quests and Cyber Space levels | Closest current Sega option for speed and roaming, but not driving |
| Fable | Planned for PS5 in Autumn 2026 | Not yet established in the cited announcement | PlayStation Blog calls Albion fully open world | A new beginning for the series | Potential open-world alternative, but not available to play while waiting |
| Project Windless | Upcoming for PS5 | Not yet established in the cited announcement | Open-world action RPG | A setting more than a thousand years before The Bird That Drinks Tears novels | Another future open-world option, not a current recommendation |
The table separates confirmed structure from assumptions. In particular, an “open-zone” map is not automatically the same thing as an open-world city, and an announced action RPG is not automatically a driving game.
Choose by the feeling you want while you wait
If you want constant speed
Start with Sonic Frontiers. Its design puts fast movement into the act of crossing the map, so you spend less time selecting a race and more time moving between objectives. This is the best match for the sensation of momentum, even though the character and controls are entirely different from a taxi.

Sonic Frontiers again fits better than the other substantiated choices that are currently available. Its Open-Zone format combines traversal with optional puzzles, battles and side quests. The freedom is structured around adventure activities rather than a city-simulation routine, but it gives you a place to roam instead of a sequence of isolated arcade screens.
If you specifically want a driving loop
None of the currently documented alternatives provides that match. Crazy Taxi: World Tour is the only title in this group officially centered on open-city driving, and its 2027 release means it is still a wait-and-see proposition. Treat any claim that another listed game recreates its taxi handling or fare system as speculation unless Sega publishes those details.
If you want a confirmed conventional open world
PlayStation Blog describes Fable as having a fully open-world Albion and lists a PS5 launch for Autumn 2026. That makes it relevant to the broader “open-world PS5 games” part of the search, but it is not a game you can pick up as a present-day stopgap if you are reading before launch. The same article calls it a new beginning rather than a remake or sequel.

If you are tracking future announcements
Project Windless is described by Krafton Montréal Studio as an open-world action RPG coming to PS5. Its setting is more than a thousand years before the events of The Bird That Drinks Tears novels. The announcement establishes that it is upcoming, not that it is available now, and it does not establish a driving system or an arcade time-pressure loop.
What to check before buying Sonic Frontiers
- Confirm the platform: Select the PS5 edition, since Sega’s product overview lists a physical PS5 version alongside the game’s other releases.
- Decide whether on-foot movement is acceptable: The game’s speed comes from controlling Sonic, not a vehicle. If driving is non-negotiable, wait for more information about Crazy Taxi: World Tour instead.
- Expect several activity types: The documented loop includes battles, puzzles, side quests and Cyber Space levels. It is broader than a single arcade driving mode.
- Use “Open-Zone” literally: The term describes Sega’s map structure. It should not be treated as proof that the game has the same city layout, traffic systems or mission design as Crazy Taxi.
- Choose physical or digital deliberately: A physical version is listed, so disc buyers have that option; the cited information does not establish pricing, regional stock or a specific retailer.
How to follow the wait without confusing announcements and availability
Keep three dates separate. Sonic Frontiers is the currently available PS5 game in this comparison. Crazy Taxi: World Tour has a 2027 target but no more precise launch date in the announcement cited here. Fable is planned for Autumn 2026, while Project Windless is described only as upcoming for PS5 in the cited announcement. A release window is not the same as a game that can be played today.
Also keep the labels separate. Sega’s wording for Crazy Taxi: World Tour is “open-city driving”; Sega’s wording for Sonic Frontiers is “Open-Zone”; PlayStation Blog’s wording for Fable is “fully open world”; and Krafton Montréal Studio calls Project Windless an “open-world action RPG.” Those descriptions are useful precisely because they do not promise identical mechanics.
Bottom line for a PS5 owner
Buy or play Sonic Frontiers now if your priority is Sega, high-speed movement and a sizeable area to explore. It is the only substantiated currently available recommendation here, and its physical PS5 edition is documented. Wait for further details on Crazy Taxi: World Tour if the essential feature is driving through a city under arcade-style pressure: Sega has confirmed the 2027 PS5 release and the open-city direction, but not enough systems detail to call it an open-world game or a remake. Track Fable and Project Windless as future open-world PS5 releases, not as games you can play during the current wait.
