If a store doesn’t accept your digital wallet, choose another payment method shown at that store’s checkout. Depending on the retailer, that may be PayPal, Google Pay, Apple Pay, Venmo at an authorized merchant, or a debit or credit card. Having an account with a wallet provider does not make every retailer accept it; available options can vary by merchant, region, device, and browser.
How to choose a fallback at checkout
- Check the payment options the store actually displays. Use a wallet only if it appears in the checkout flow or the retailer says it supports it. Merchant acceptance is a choice, not a feature automatically enabled by your wallet account.
- Check eligibility and your funding source. Make sure the wallet works for your country and that it has an eligible card or other payment source available. Google advises keeping at least one card in Google Wallet for Google Pay checkout.
- Use the supported device and browser flow. A checkout may offer a method only in a compatible context. Apple Pay on the web, for example, depends on participating merchant platforms and payment providers.
- If no preferred wallet is offered, use another listed method. A debit or credit card is often a straightforward alternative when the merchant accepts it.
Which wallets can serve as alternatives?
PayPal
If the retailer offers PayPal, you can select it and pay using a funding source linked to your PayPal account. PayPal’s merchant overview also lists Venmo, Pay Later, Apple Pay, and Google Pay among options merchants may enable, but that does not mean a given store has enabled each one. PayPal’s merchant payment overview describes available integrations.

Google Pay and Google Wallet
Google says payment methods saved in Google Wallet can be used for online and in-app purchases where Google Pay is supported. That can reduce the need to enter payment information again, but it does not make Google Pay universal: the merchant’s checkout must support it. Google’s help page explains supported online and in-app payments.

For US users, there is an important change for older instructions: PayPal-branded virtual cards linked through Google Pay stopped being available for online checkout through the Google Pay button in July 2024. They were automatically deleted and no longer supported from June 16, 2025. Google advises keeping a card added to Google Wallet for continued Google Pay checkout. These dates concern the US-specific PayPal virtual-card feature, not Google Pay generally. Google’s help page covers the change.

Apple Pay
Apple Pay is an option only where the merchant’s website, commerce platform, or payment provider has integrated it for a supported checkout. Do not assume a store accepts Apple Pay just because it accepts contactless payments in person. Apple’s developer material describes web and app integrations.
Venmo
Use Venmo for a purchase only when the merchant offers it and you are eligible. Venmo’s agreement describes purchases from authorized merchants; PayPal’s merchant documentation limits Venmo merchant payments to US-based merchants and US-based consumers. Venmo’s user agreement and PayPal’s merchant overview set out those conditions.

What acceptance survey figures can—and can’t—tell you
A PYMNTS Intelligence survey published in 2024 reported the following share of surveyed merchants accepting each method. The survey was based on 102 complete merchant responses collected in September 2024; these figures are a dated sample, not a live directory or a guarantee about any particular retailer.
| Wallet | Share of surveyed merchants accepting it | Source and scope |
|---|---|---|
| PayPal | 96% | PYMNTS Intelligence, 2024; 102 complete merchant responses fielded September 2024. PYMNTS |
| Apple Pay | 84% | PYMNTS Intelligence, 2024; 102 complete merchant responses fielded September 2024. PYMNTS |
| Google Pay | 80% | PYMNTS Intelligence, 2024; 102 complete merchant responses fielded September 2024. PYMNTS |
These results offer context about the surveyed merchants at that time. They do not establish today’s acceptance rate across all online stores, nor whether a specific store supports a wallet.

Why the checkout page is the deciding factor
Wallet providers and merchants have to connect their systems for a wallet button to appear. For example, Apple describes integrations through e-commerce platforms and payment service providers, while PayPal’s merchant materials describe options merchants can enable. A wallet may be available at one store and absent at another, or its availability may depend on the shopper’s region or checkout device.
PayPal also offers payment links that support PayPal, Pay Later, Venmo, Apple Pay, and major debit and credit cards. PayPal describes those links as available in more than 200 countries and regions and more than 23 currencies; that describes the merchant product, not a promise that every method is available to every buyer or merchant. PayPal’s payment-links information provides the product details.
