Pack your ID, laptop and charger, phone charger, project-specific hardware, comfortable layers, a reusable water bottle and basic toiletries. Add a sleeping bag, snacks or extra power equipment only after checking the organizer’s current rules: an overnight event may not allow venue sleeping, and food, bedding and outlets vary by location.
Start with the essentials you will use all day
- ID: Bring the student or government identification your organizer requires for check-in.
- Laptop and charger: Confirm your device works and bring its power adapter.
- Phone and charger: Keep your phone available for event updates and practical needs.
- Project gear: Pack the hardware, cables and adapters your project depends on. Do not assume the venue will have specialized components.
- Comfort basics: Bring comfortable clothes, a warm layer, a reusable water bottle, toiletries and any personal medication.
Those are a useful baseline, not a universal mandatory list. Organizer recommendations include these core items, but each event’s entry, equipment and safety requirements take priority. Check the latest participant instructions for what identification is accepted and what you may bring inside.

Check the sleep policy before packing bedding
“Overnight” describes an event schedule, not a promise of a bed—or even permission to sleep in the venue. Verify whether sleeping is allowed, where participants may rest, and whether bedding is available before deciding what to carry.

These examples show why another event’s arrangements are not a safe guide to yours. If venue sleeping is allowed but bedding is not supplied, consider a sleeping bag, pillow, blanket or warm sleepwear. Find out what food and power are provided
Check the schedule or participant guide for meals, snacks, water access, outlets and any restrictions on extension cords or power strips. Bring snacks if you have dietary needs, expect long gaps between meals, or the event does not cover food you can eat.
- Hack Arizona lists lunch and dinner on day one, breakfast on day two, and snacks including at midnight. Hack Arizona FAQ

- Parallax 2026 says an extension box is provided per team and recommends that teams needing more sockets bring a mini extension box. Confirm that your venue permits one before packing it. Parallax 2026
Pack for comfort and safe, respectful participation
Hackathons can involve long periods at a workstation and, when venue sleep is permitted, a brief rest in shared space. Useful optional items include a notebook and pen, mouse, headphones and a compact layer you can add or remove. Follow local quiet-area rules; Southwest MN Hacks, for example, asks participants to use headphones for audio during its approximate midnight-to-6 a.m. quiet hours. Southwest MN Hacks rules

Pack as your baseline
- Required student or government ID
- Laptop, charger and phone charger
- Project hardware, essential cables and adapters
- Comfortable clothing and a warm layer
- Reusable water bottle
- Toiletries, medication and other personal essentials
Add only if the event makes it useful and allowed
- Sleeping bag, pillow, blanket or warm sleepwear, if venue sleeping is permitted and suitable bedding is not supplied
- Snacks, if food timing or dietary needs call for them
- Extension cord or power strip, if allowed and needed for the venue’s outlet plan
- Headphones, notebook, pen, mouse or other familiar work accessories
Before leaving, review the event’s latest instructions for venue entry, sleep access, bedding, meals, power, bag rules and safety. Arrangements can change by event and venue; the organizer’s current guidance is the one that applies.
