A subscription is easier to reassess and may be a better fit for demanding sync or automation workflows. Compare equivalent plans at current local prices, check the terms, and keep another copy of important files.
What “lifetime” means—and what it does not
“Lifetime” is a provider-defined payment and access term, not a promise that a cloud service will operate forever. pCloud defines its individual lifetime payment as covering “99 years or the lifetime of the account holder, whichever is shorter.” Its terms also allow for services to be modified or discontinued and describe what happens if pCloud ceases operation. Read the provider’s current terms before paying: pCloud Terms and Conditions and pCloud payment options.

A one-time payment also does not guarantee that every feature you use today will remain unchanged for the duration of the plan. Check what happens to files and access if the service changes, closes, or your account is affected.

Use the same storage capacity, comparable features, country, currency, taxes, and time horizon. Let L be the one-time lifetime price and S the annual subscription cost for the comparable tier. A simple break-even estimate is L ÷ S in years. For monthly billing, calculate S as 12 times the monthly price.

This is a cost comparison, not a guarantee that the plan, price, or feature set will stay available for that long. Include any necessary paid add-ons, likely capacity upgrades, and possible subscription price changes. Annual billing may reduce recurring costs: pCloud’s help article says annual plans save 20% versus monthly, but check current local prices rather than relying on that percentage alone.
Illustrative prices, not universal quotes
At the time the pages were accessed in 2026, pCloud’s localized pricing page displayed one-time lifetime prices of €219 for 500 GB, €499 for 2 TB, and €1,499 for 10 TB. It also showed higher crossed-out EUR amounts. These are a snapshot of a localized, promotional storefront—not guaranteed prices in your country or at checkout. Check the pCloud pricing page for current terms and your region.

For comparison, Apple’s United States iCloud+ page listed monthly prices at access in 2026 of $0.99 for 50 GB, $2.99 for 200 GB, $9.99 for 2 TB, $29.99 for 6 TB, and $59.99 for 12 TB. Prices vary by region, may be subject to taxes, and can change. Apple says an iCloud+ plan can be shared with up to five family members. See Apple’s iCloud+ plan and pricing information for current details.
These examples are not a direct price comparison: the providers and capacities differ. To calculate a useful break-even point, compare the same capacity and the features you actually need.

Check whether the plan fits how you use cloud storage
Storage capacity and workflow limits can matter more than the headline payment model. A low one-time price is not a good value if the plan lacks a feature your routine depends on.
Casual storage and occasional syncing
A lifetime plan may fit someone who wants a stable amount of space for personal files and expects modest, ordinary use. Icedrive describes its lifetime offering as aimed at casual users. Its feature table lists limits for lifetime plans including two sync devices, three sync pairs per device, and file versions kept for 14 days, up to 30 versions. Check Icedrive’s current plan table before buying, because features can change.

Automation, NAS syncing, and large archives
If you depend on continuous automation, NAS-style syncing, or large-scale archival workflows, check the plan’s specific limits before choosing it. Icedrive says those high-frequency uses are better suited to its subscription plans. That is the provider’s own guidance about its products, not a general comparison of every cloud-storage service.

Sharing, encryption, and moving later
Compare the features needed by everyone who will use the storage: sharing options, device limits, encryption, version history, and how easily you can retrieve or move files if you switch providers. The cited plan information does not establish a broad security ranking or a comparison of providers’ migration tools, so verify those details in each provider’s current documentation.

Choose enough capacity for growth
Estimate how much space you use now and how quickly it grows. Photos, videos, device backups, and shared files can push a plan toward its limit sooner than expected. Check both the cost of moving up a tier and the consequences of running out of space.
Apple says that when iCloud storage is full, a device will not back up to iCloud, new photos and videos will not upload to iCloud Photos, and iCloud Drive and other iCloud apps will not stay up to date. These are Apple-specific effects; do not assume another provider behaves identically. Apple explains them in its iCloud storage support guidance.
Compare flexibility, cancellation, and access terms
Monthly billing makes it easier to reassess a service as your needs change, although a subscription may cost more over a longer period. A one-time plan avoids recurring bills but requires a larger upfront commitment. Before paying, check renewal dates, cancellation rules, downgrade options, refund terms, and what happens to files if you stop paying or the provider changes its service.
For pCloud, monthly subscriptions are billed each month, annual subscriptions yearly, and lifetime is a one-time payment. Its cancellation guidance says cancellation takes effect for the next billing period, while access continues through the already-paid period; cancelling does not itself submit a refund request. Review the current pCloud cancellation guidance and applicable terms before deciding.
Keep a separate copy of irreplaceable files
Cloud sync and storage make files accessible across devices, but “lifetime” wording is not a reason to make a provider your only copy. Consider keeping a separate local copy of files you cannot replace, such as on an external drive. That is an optional precaution, not a guarantee or a complete backup plan; choose a method that fits how often your files change and how you would restore them.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Estimate how long you expect to use the storage, and compare costs over that period.
- Match capacity and features before calculating a break-even point.
- Use your country’s current prices and account for taxes, add-ons, upgrades, and possible renewal-price changes.
- Check workflow limits for syncing, devices, automation, NAS use, archives, sharing, and file versions.
- Read the provider’s current cancellation, refund, access, and service-change terms.
- Keep another copy of files that would be difficult or impossible to replace.
