Set the chair so your lower back is supported and your feet rest flat—or on a stable footrest—then bring the keyboard and mouse close enough to use with relaxed shoulders and straight wrists. Center the monitor in front of you at a comfortable reading distance, with its top line at or below eye level. These are adjustable starting points, not a single posture that suits everyone: OSHA says no one workstation arrangement fits all users.
Set up the chair and desk together
Begin seated, with your back against the chair’s lumbar support. Adjust the seat so your feet rest on the floor. If the work surface or keyboard height means you must raise the chair and your feet no longer reach the floor, a stable footrest can support both feet.

Check the seat depth as well as its height: the seat should support your thighs without pressing into the backs of your knees. Make sure your thighs and legs have room beneath the desk. OSHA’s guidance emphasizes chair adjustability and fit; if you are choosing a chair, try it for comfort and fit before buying.
Position the keyboard and mouse within easy reach
Move close enough to the desk that the keyboard sits directly in front of you without reaching. Let your shoulders relax, keep your elbows near your body, and align your wrists with your forearms rather than bending them up, down, or sideways. Keep the mouse next to the keyboard so using it does not require a repeated reach or torso twist.

OSHA’s evaluation checklist describes elbows near the body, forearms approximately parallel to the floor, and an angle of roughly 90–100 degrees between the upper arm and forearm. Treat this as practical checklist guidance, not a requirement to hold your joints rigidly in one position.
If a high desk prevents a comfortable keyboard position, an adjustable work surface or keyboard platform may help. Preserve enough clearance underneath for your legs.

Center the monitor and set a comfortable viewing distance
Place the display directly ahead of you. Set its top line at or below eye level, adjusting the screen so you can read without bending your head or neck. OSHA gives 20–40 inches (about 50–100 cm) as a preferred viewing-distance range; it is guidance rather than a mandatory measurement for every person or screen. Choose a distance that lets you read while keeping your head and torso upright. Increasing text size can help if small text makes you lean forward.
Reduce reflected glare where possible. One practical option is to position the monitor perpendicular to a window rather than facing it or placing the window directly behind you. A stand or arm is useful only if it helps achieve a comfortable screen height and angle while preserving your viewing distance; OSHA does not specify a required stand or monitor-arm design.

Adapt the setup for a laptop or multiple monitors
Primary-use laptop
When a laptop is your primary computer, OSHA advises applying desktop workstation principles and using a separate keyboard and input device. Separate devices let you position the screen at a suitable height while keeping your hands near desk level. A stand or dock may help place the display, but no particular product is required by the guidance.
Two or more monitors
Put the screen you use most directly in front of you. If you use two displays equally, place them side by side to limit the amount of head movement needed to view them.

Recheck the fit and vary your position
After setting up, notice whether any part of the arrangement makes you reach, twist to see the screen, raise your shoulders, bend your wrists, leave your feet unsupported, or press the chair edge against the backs of your knees. Adjust the component causing the mismatch, using OSHA’s workstation evaluation checklist to review the setup.

Choose equipment only to solve a fit problem
- Chair: Look for adjustments that suit your body and desk, lower-back support, and a seat width and depth that do not press behind your knees.
- Footrest: Consider one if your feet cannot rest flat after adjusting the chair and work surface. It should be stable and support both feet; it is not a default purchase.
- Monitor stand or arm: Choose one only if the screen cannot otherwise reach a comfortable height and angle. Check stability and monitor compatibility.
- Laptop accessories: A separate keyboard and pointing device allow independent placement of the screen and hands. A laptop stand is optional if it helps position the display.
