Pack for a small cabin, not a full season on land: bring a compact bag, a practical off-duty wardrobe, role-specific work items, and the documents and essentials you cannot afford to lose. Your employer’s joining instructions take precedence over any general packing list, especially for uniforms, baggage limits, restricted items, and required paperwork.
Start with your joining instructions and baggage rules
Before packing, check the joining packet or ask your recruiter what your position requires. Uniform arrangements differ: Silversea’s 2022 new-crew guide says uniforms are issued on the first day but still tells new hires to check specific requirements, while Royal Caribbean’s packing FAQ suggests a pair of black pants, a shirt, and comfortable black shoes. Those examples are not universal rules.

- Confirm which uniform pieces and shoes you must bring, if any.
- Check your booked airline ticket for its actual cabin and checked-bag allowance, then check whether your employer has separate baggage rules.
- Ask which items are restricted and which travel or joining documents you need for your route.

Pack for limited cabin storage
Royal Caribbean Group advises employees to bring only what they need because cabin space is very limited. Cabin sharing depends on position, according to the company, so plan for less personal storage than you may have at home. The company says assignments range from three to approximately eight months depending on position; this is Royal Caribbean Group’s stated range, not a universal cruise-industry contract length. Think in terms of a modest rotation of clothes that can work together, rather than a separate outfit for every day. There is no universal clothing count in the official examples, and what is practical depends on your itinerary, weather, role, and laundry arrangements.

Use this practical packing checklist
Off-duty clothes
Royal Caribbean’s sample list includes long pants, sweaters, shirts, shorts, T-shirts, belts, suitable shoes, tennis or beach shoes, and a swimsuit. Adjust the mix for your route and expected weather: include a warm layer if conditions may be cool, and do not pack swimwear or other items you will not use on your assignment. Work clothes and shoes
Follow your employer’s role-specific instructions rather than assuming the examples above apply to you. If the joining packet says uniform pieces are supplied, do not pack extra uniform items unless your employer asks; if it names required pieces or footwear, use that list.

Keep documents and immediate essentials in hand luggage
Do not put your only access to joining paperwork or first-day necessities in a checked bag. Silversea advises new crew to keep original documents—including contract, agreement, bank details, and medicals—in hand luggage, along with essential items, work shoes, and a change of underwear in case luggage is delayed. - Original joining, employment, bank, and medical documents required by your employer
- Essential medication and any required medicine documentation
- Work shoes or other first-day essentials specified by your joining instructions
- One change of clothes and underwear
- Phone and charger
Keep the hand luggage itself within your airline’s rules. If an item is required for joining but cannot travel in the cabin, confirm the correct handling with your employer and airline before departure.

What generic packing lists cannot tell you
Official lists are examples, not a substitute for your own joining packet. They do not establish a universal baggage allowance, uniform requirement, prohibited-item list, laundry schedule, or required clothing quantity. Confirm those details with your recruiter or employer, and tailor the remaining choices to your role and itinerary.
