Before buying multipoint Bluetooth headphones, confirm that the exact model can stay connected to the devices you use, then check how it switches audio and handles calls and notifications. “Multipoint” does not guarantee that every model connects to the same number of devices or switches between them in the same way.
What multipoint means when you use headphones
Multipoint lets headphones maintain Bluetooth connections to more than one source device, such as a phone and a laptop. It can save you from disconnecting and pairing again when you move between devices, but it does not necessarily mean the headphones play audio from both at once.

Google’s Android Help describes connecting to two Bluetooth devices and selecting which audio source to play. It also notes that, when switching sources, you may need to stop media on the first device before starting it on the second. Sony says supported headphones can switch between two sources without the usual Bluetooth reconnection process. What to check before you buy
How many devices can stay connected?
Check the number of simultaneous connections supported by the exact headphone model. Two devices are described in the cited Google and Sony guidance; Bose notes that some Bluetooth devices support three. If you need to keep a personal phone, work phone, and laptop connected together, look for explicit three-device support in the model’s documentation. How does switching audio work?
Find out whether switching is automatic, requires you to select a source, or depends on stopping playback on the current device first. A headset may remain connected to both sources while playing only one at a time. If you regularly move between a work call on your computer and music on your phone, check the steps required to move listening in both directions.
What happens when a call or notification arrives?
Call handling can take priority over media: Google describes switching from media to calls. Notification sounds can also affect playback; Bang & Olufsen warns that an incoming call or notification may shift playback to the other device. Are your devices supported?
Verify multipoint support for the headphone model itself and check that it works with the phone and computer you plan to connect. Do not infer support from a brand name, a Bluetooth pairing list, or a general claim that the product pairs with multiple devices. Sony directs buyers to model-specific support information or its app, and JBL provides a compatibility page: Sony support and JBL multipoint compatibility.
Could multipoint affect another feature you need?
Check the current documentation for the exact model with multipoint enabled if a particular codec or other feature is important to you. The cited official guidance does not establish a universal rule for multipoint’s effects on codec availability, battery life, latency, or other features, so do not assume every headphone has the same trade-offs.

How to compare shortlisted headphones
Once models meet your connection-count requirement, compare their documented behavior against the way you use your devices:
- Simultaneous connections: the number supported by the exact model.
- Switching: whether it is automatic or requires a source selection or stopping playback.
- Calls and notifications: what takes priority and whether alerts from another device can interrupt playback.
- Compatibility: whether your specific phone, computer, operating systems, and apps are supported.
- Feature restrictions: any model-specific codec or other limitations while multipoint is active.
Use the manufacturer’s documentation for connection claims. If a detail is not specified there, treat it as unknown rather than assuming behavior based on another model or brand.
