A title marked suitable for children can still include frightening scenes, heavy reading, public chat, random-item purchases or camera movement that makes a particular child uncomfortable.
Use the game’s regional rating and full store-page details to decide whether it fits your child, your household rules and your PC. The checklist below turns that decision into a repeatable process rather than a guess based on a trailer or the word “family” in a description.

A quick buying rule for parents
Before purchasing, answer these questions in order:
- What age rating is assigned in your region, and what content descriptors accompany it?
- Does the game include online multiplayer, voice or text chat, user-generated content, location sharing or unrestricted internet access?
- Are there in-game purchases, including purchases that contain random items?
- Can the intended child account access the title through Steam Families, and are there title-specific sharing restrictions?
- Will the child manage the reading, puzzles, controls, camera movement, difficulty and save system?
- Can your computer run the game comfortably with the intended controller, display and audio setup?
- If the fit is wrong, have you checked Steam’s current refund conditions and kept playtime within the stated limits?
If any answer is unclear, postpone the purchase until you can verify it on the live Steam store page or in your family-account settings. A lower age category never overrides a descriptor or an interactive feature that conflicts with your household rules.

Start with the regional age rating
Ratings depend on region
Steam may display an age gate or rating from a regional board such as the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) in North America or PEGI in many European markets. Check the rating shown for your account’s region, because a category, descriptor set and legal presentation can differ by territory. If no familiar rating is shown, do not assume that the game is unrated, harmless or intended for all ages; use the store description and any available rating summary as additional evidence.
ESRB explains that its system has three parts: rating categories, content descriptors and interactive elements. The category is useful for initial screening, but it is not a scene-by-scene inventory. ESRB’s stated purpose is to provide information “about what’s in a video game or app so parents can make informed choices about which are right for their family.”
Read every descriptor
Open the complete rating summary instead of relying on a badge such as Everyone or E10+. Look for descriptors covering violence, fantasy violence, language, fear, crude humor, sexual content, gambling references and any other subject that could matter to your child. A descriptor is interpreted in relation to the assigned category, and ESRB notes that descriptors are not a complete listing of everything in a game. Read them alongside the Steam store description, screenshots, trailers and warnings.
Consider how a child reacts, not only how a board labels a scene. Cartoon combat may be acceptable to one child and upsetting to another. A game with no realistic blood can still use peril, sudden threats, ominous audio or loss of a companion to create sustained fear. A low category also says nothing about reading difficulty, online strangers or a confusing purchase system.
Check interactive elements separately
Interactive elements can affect suitability even when they do not change the age category. ESRB identifies examples including in-game purchases, purchases that include random items, users interacting, location sharing and unrestricted internet. Treat each as a separate question:
- In-game purchases: Can the child buy cosmetic items, currency, expansions or boosts from the game?
- Random items: Does a payment provide an uncertain item rather than a clearly identified product?
- Users interact: Can players communicate or encounter other players, even if the main campaign is suitable?
- Location sharing: Does the service request or expose location information?
- Unrestricted internet: Can the game open broader web or network features that are not moderated like the campaign?
Discuss these elements with the child before installation. A game may be acceptable for offline play but inappropriate when its social or purchasing features are enabled.

Use the rating statistics as context, not as a shortcut
ESRB reported that 65% of ratings assigned to physical and console-downloadable video games in 2024 were E or E10+. That figure describes the distribution of ratings in those formats; it does not establish that a particular Steam title is suitable for your child. In a 2025 survey by Hart Research Associates, 83% of parents with children who play video games said they were aware of ESRB ratings and 77% said they regularly checked them before buying. Checking the actual rating summary remains more useful than relying on category popularity.
Examine online and social exposure
Identify the game’s modes
Determine whether the action-adventure title is single-player, local co-op, online multiplayer or a mixture. A single-player campaign can still require an internet connection, but it usually presents fewer opportunities for unsolicited contact than a public multiplayer mode. Local co-op keeps play in the same room and lets you supervise conversations, while online co-op introduces other players, invitations and moderation questions.
Do not infer the mode from a trailer. Check the Steam store page and the developer’s current feature list for the number of players, whether co-op is local or online, and whether an account or platform service is required. A mode labelled “multiplayer” may include public matchmaking, private invitations, or both; those distinctions matter for a child account.
Investigate communication and user-created content
Find out whether players can use voice chat, text chat, emotes, friend requests, direct messages or shared lobbies. Also check for user-generated levels, images, names or other content. These systems can expose a child to language, sexual references, frightening material, harassment or links that are not represented by the game’s campaign rating.
Set a household rule for who may communicate with the child and what information may be shared. A child should never disclose a real name, school, address, schedule, phone number, photographs or live location to another player. If the title allows private sessions, start there; if it offers no meaningful communication controls, consider the offline mode or choose another game.
Use Steam’s content-preference warnings
Steam’s content-preference system can warn you about content such as violence or nudity before you view a store page. Treat the warning as a screening aid, not a replacement for the rating summary and your own judgment. Review the page yourself first so you can explain any concern before the child sees promotional images or video.

Plan accounts and Steam Families access before paying
Understand what Steam Families provides
Valve documentation states: “The Steam Families feature allows Steam users to play games from up to five close family members libraries.” That makes a shared household library practical, but it does not mean every title is automatically shareable or that every account can use every feature. Valve documents technical and game-specific limitations, so confirm eligibility for the exact title.
Check that the child’s individual Steam account is included in the family group and that the game appears as shareable for that account. Some games may be excluded because of licensing, third-party account requirements, subscriptions, separate launchers or other technical restrictions. A title that works for the purchasing adult may therefore be unavailable to the child through the family library.
Use separate child identities
Create an individual account for each child rather than handing over an adult login. Separate identities preserve age-appropriate restrictions, keep purchases attributable to the correct person and make it easier to review play activity. They also prevent a child from inheriting the adult’s saved payment method, friends list and private messages.

This small check can reveal an account or regional problem before money is committed.
Configure parental controls and spending limits
Restrict access before handing over the game
ESRB recommends individual child accounts, age-based rules, limits on online communication and controls for in-game spending. Apply those rules before the first session, not after an unexpected message or purchase. Review the settings whenever the child changes age, receives a new device or starts an online mode.
- Allow only the games and modes that match the child’s age and maturity.
- Require approval for new games, downloadable content and purchases.
- Disable or limit voice and text communication when the game permits it.
- Review friend requests and invitations rather than accepting them automatically.
- Set a spending ceiling and remove saved payment details from the child account where practical.
- Agree on screen-time windows and a procedure for stopping play when the child feels frightened or uncomfortable.
Steam’s exact labels and control locations can change with the client, so use the current Family or parental-management screens associated with your account and confirm each restriction with a test account. A setting that controls access to the base game may not control a separate launcher, website or third-party account connected to it.

Plan audio for shared rooms
ESRB’s Family Gaming Guide advises: “Use headphones while gaming in shared spaces to shield younger kids from mature language, violence, or trash talk.” Headphones can reduce exposure for other family members, but they do not make unsuitable content appropriate. Use a child volume limit, keep the adult able to check in, and remember that voice chat can still carry disturbing language directly to the child.
Compare games on the practical factors that ratings omit
When two games pass the rating and social checks, compare the features that determine whether the child can actually enjoy and finish the game.
| Factor | What to verify on the Steam page | Why it affects family fit |
|---|---|---|
| Violence intensity | Style of combat, frequency, sound effects, blood, enemy reactions and frightening set pieces | Two games with the same category can feel very different emotionally. |
| Reading load | Amount of dialogue, subtitle speed, font size, language options and whether critical instructions are text-only | Strong readers may manage a story-heavy game; younger readers may miss objectives or become frustrated. |
| Puzzle difficulty | Presence of hints, adjustable puzzle settings, timers and consequences for failed attempts | A game can be nonviolent yet too demanding without an adult helping. |
| Save and checkpoint behavior | Manual saves, autosaves, checkpoint frequency and whether progress is lost after failure | Reliable checkpoints prevent a short session from ending in tears or repeated sections. |
| Camera and motion | First- or third-person view, camera shake, motion blur, field-of-view controls and sensitivity options | Fast camera movement can cause discomfort or motion sickness. |
| Difficulty settings | Story, easy, assist or adjustable modes; whether difficulty can be changed after starting | An adjustable challenge lets a child learn without removing the adventure. |
| Accessibility | Subtitles, text-size controls, color options, remappable controls, hold-versus-toggle settings and audio cues | Accessibility can determine whether the child can play independently. |
| Controls | Keyboard and mouse support, controller support, button prompts and local input requirements | Familiar controls reduce cognitive load and avoid an extra hardware purchase. |
| Co-op structure | Single-player, local co-op, online co-op, player count and whether every player needs an account | Local play is easier to supervise; online play requires communication rules. |
| Hardware demand | Operating system, processor, graphics, memory, storage, display settings and controller requirements | A game that stutters or crashes is a poor fit regardless of its content. |
| Family sharing | Whether the title is marked shareable and whether a third-party account or launcher is required | Sharing can fail at the title level even when the family group is configured correctly. |
Reading and language deserve special attention
Action-adventure games often combine navigation, inventory management, quest text and environmental clues. Ask whether the child can read the language used in menus and subtitles quickly enough to act. Check for subtitle size, background contrast and the ability to pause during dialogue. If the game supports several languages, verify that both spoken audio and written text can be changed; a translated interface may still leave voice lines in another language.
Camera comfort is a real buying criterion
Look for camera shake, motion blur, rapid turning, narrow corridors and forced first-person sequences. A child who becomes dizzy may not be able to explain the cause. If the store page does not list comfort settings, search the game’s current manual or support information before buying, and plan a short first session rather than an extended play period.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check the computer and controller before installation
Match published requirements to the actual PC
Compare the Steam system requirements with the computer’s operating system, processor, graphics hardware, memory and free storage. The minimum specification generally describes what is required to launch, not what will feel smooth at your chosen resolution. If the game lists a recommended specification, use it as the safer target for stable frame rates and responsive camera control.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Allow extra storage for patches and downloadable content, and confirm that the child can install updates without access to an adult account. If the title uses an additional launcher or account, include that software in your privacy and communication review.
Best Value
Test the intended input method
Some children find dual-stick camera control difficult even when they can handle simpler games. Check whether the title supports your controller, displays the correct button prompts and allows remapping. For keyboard play, confirm that essential actions can be reached without awkward combinations. A short supervised tutorial session is often enough to reveal whether the controls, camera and text are manageable.
Use a repeatable buying workflow
- Open the Steam store page for the exact edition. Deluxe, bundle and downloadable-content editions can have different requirements or included features.
- Record the regional rating. Note the board, category and every listed descriptor instead of copying only the badge.
- Review interactive elements. Look specifically for in-game purchases, random-item purchases, users interacting, location sharing and unrestricted internet.
- Map the social surface. Identify single-player, local co-op and online modes; note voice chat, text chat, user-created content and account requirements.
- Compare practical fit. Check reading load, puzzle design, save behavior, difficulty, camera comfort, accessibility, controller support and hardware requirements.
- Verify family access. From the intended child account, confirm that the title is shareable through Steam Families and that no separate license or launcher blocks access.
- Configure controls and spending limits. Apply game, communication and purchase restrictions before the first unsupervised session.
- Make a first-session plan. Start with a short, supervised play period. Watch for fear, motion discomfort, frustration, confusing instructions or unexpected contact from other players.
- Keep a refund option open. If the game is a poor fit, stop playing and compare your purchase and playtime with Steam’s current refund requirements.
Use Steam’s refund policy as a trial-and-exit plan
Steam’s refund FAQ says eligibility is conditional, and its limits can change. Read the live policy before buying: Steam refund FAQ. If you may need a refund, keep the child’s initial session brief and stay within the limits stated by Steam at the time of purchase. Do not treat a refund as a substitute for checking the rating, because returning a game after a frightening or inappropriate session does not undo the exposure.
Test the features most likely to decide suitability first: subtitles and text size, controller mapping, camera comfort, save behavior, difficulty options and the boundary between offline and online play. Avoid spending the available trial time on optional content before you know the core controls work for the child.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSet household rules that match the game
Agree on communication rules
Explain which people the child may play with, whether invitations require approval and what to do when another player asks personal questions. Teach the child to leave a session, mute or block a user and tell an adult without fear of losing access to the game.
Agree on purchase rules
Make clear that virtual currency, cosmetic items, expansions and random-item purchases require permission. Explain that a purchase can be real money even when the game presents it as coins, gems or a reward. Review transaction history together so the rule is visible rather than theoretical.
Agree on stopping rules
Define a stop signal for fear, dizziness, anger or an upsetting interaction. Save the game when possible, leave the online session and talk before deciding whether to change a setting or stop playing permanently. A child should not be pressured to continue because an adult already bought the game.
A simple decision framework for close choices

- Supervision burden: Prefer the game that gives you clearer communication controls, reliable saves and a manageable first-session plan.
- Technical reliability: Favor the title that meets your PC’s recommended requirements and supports the controller or accessibility features your child needs.
- Reversibility: If two choices are otherwise equal, choose the one you can test briefly while remaining within Steam’s current refund conditions.
This order prevents a flashy trailer, discount or familiar franchise from outweighing content, safety and practical usability. Recheck the decision when a major update adds a new mode, purchase system or online feature.
