The best automatic dishwasher is not defined by a feature name alone. Prioritize a genuine soil-sensor cycle, independently tested cleaning and drying results, plastic-drying performance, a layout that fits your dishes, and EnergyGuide figures that make operating costs comparable. Heated drying and automatic door opening can help, but neither guarantees completely dry dishes on every model.
Use the guide below to evaluate the machine itself rather than assuming that “Auto,” “Power Dry,” or another marketing label predicts the result.

Start with the features that affect results
When comparing suitable dishwashers, assess these criteria in this order:
- Automatic wash capability: Look for a soil sensor that measures how dirty the water is and adjusts the cycle. ENERGY STAR explains the principle in its dishwasher guidance.
- Drying evidence: Check independent wash-and-dry results, especially for plastic containers and lids.
- Capacity and fit: Confirm the opening dimensions, installation type, rack arrangement and rated place-setting capacity.
- Efficiency: Compare EnergyGuide energy use and estimated annual operating cost between similar models, and verify ENERGY STAR certification.
- Usability: Consider rack adjustment, cycle selection, controls, interior materials and noise.
This approach prevents a common mistake: paying for a named technology without checking whether the specific machine cleans, dries and loads well.

How an automatic wash cycle works
Soil sensors are the important part
An automatic or “Auto” wash cycle generally uses a soil sensor. During the wash, the sensor checks whether the water coming off the dishes is still dirty or has become relatively clean. The dishwasher can then alter cycle time, water use or other operating decisions for the load. ENERGY STAR says this sensing can save water while helping the machine determine how much cleaning the dishes need.
Ask the retailer or consult the exact model manual to confirm that “automatic” means a real soil-sensing cycle. The word does not establish that every manufacturer uses the same sensor, measurements or control logic.
Keep manual cycles available
A soil-sensing cycle is useful for mixed, normally dirty loads, but it should not replace practical manual choices. Look for cycles or settings for light, normal and heavy soil, plus options suited to delicate items, sanitizing or shortened loads when those needs matter to you. A household that frequently washes baked-on cookware needs more than an automatic label; it needs a credible heavy-duty option.

Drying systems differ in how they remove water, and the technology name is only a starting point. Consumer Reports’ testers report that heated-dry cycles generally produce drier dishes than systems relying on residual heat, but they also emphasize that this is not guaranteed for every model. Their 2026 coverage is updated August 26, 2026: Consumer Reports’ dishwasher report.
| Drying approach | How it works | What to check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Heated dry or power dry | Electrically generated heat is introduced into the washing chamber to evaporate moisture. The U.S. Department of Energy uses this definition for power-dry systems. | Confirm whether it is optional, how it affects energy use, and the model’s independent drying result. |
| Residual-heat or condensation drying | Heat retained in the dishes and wash chamber helps moisture condense and drain away. | Expect performance to vary; plastics may retain water even when glass and ceramic are dry. |
| Automatic door opening | The door opens near or at the end of the cycle so steam can escape. | Consumer Reports describes the approach as effective in testing, but compare the particular model’s results rather than assuming the feature guarantees dryness. |
| Fan-assisted or other systems | A fan or another airflow design moves humid air out of the chamber. | Look for measured results and operating-noise information; a technology label alone does not establish performance. |
Turning off heated dry can reduce energy use on some machines, according to ENERGY STAR. If you choose that option, allow more time for air drying and judge whether the remaining moisture is acceptable for your dishes.
Use plastic as your drying stress test
Plastic containers, cups and lids are harder to dry than glass or ceramic because they hold less heat and tend to retain droplets. Consumer Reports’ buying guide says, “Many dishwashers struggle to get items fully dry—especially plastic items, which are harder to dry than glass or ceramic.” See its guide, updated May 28, 2026: Choose the Right Dishwasher for Your Kitchen.
Independent test methods that examine ceramic, glass and plasticware after a complete wash-and-dry cycle are more useful than a brochure promising “spotless” or “bone-dry” results. When reading a score, find out whether it covers the full cycle and whether plastic items were included. If a store demonstration uses only plates and glasses, it has not answered the question most likely to affect your daily unloading.
Capacity and installation fit
Match capacity to your household
ENERGY STAR distinguishes capacity this way: standard-capacity models hold more than eight place settings and six serving pieces, while compact-capacity models hold less than eight place settings and six serving pieces. That is a category definition, not a guarantee of how many unusually shaped pans or bowls will fit. Verify the exact model’s rated capacity and inspect its rack layout.

Measure the opening, not just the appliance
Before ordering, measure the width, height and depth of the kitchen opening, including obstructions such as trim, flooring changes, plumbing and the electrical connection. Confirm whether the machine is designed for your installation type and whether the door can open without hitting an island or adjacent cabinet. A dishwasher that technically fits the cavity but cannot open fully is not a practical fit.
Look at the racks and tines
Adjustable upper racks, fold-down tines and a flexible lower rack can matter more than a small difference in nominal capacity. Check whether the upper rack can be lowered for tall glasses, whether large plates clear the spray arms, and where the cutlery basket sits. Examine the interior in person or in detailed diagrams so you can test it against your largest regular items.
ENERGY STAR and Consumer Reports both identify capacity, interior design and loading convenience as buying considerations. Consumer Reports also notes that stainless-steel interiors are durable and stain-resistant and can help drying; confirm the exact construction because exterior finish and tub material are separate specifications.
Compare energy use and operating cost correctly
Read the EnergyGuide label
The yellow EnergyGuide label reports estimated energy use and annual operating cost. ENERGY STAR advises comparing those figures among similar models rather than comparing a compact machine with a full-size machine. The annual cost is an estimate, not a bill prediction: your electricity or gas rates, number of cycles and selected options will change the result.
Check the label alongside ENERGY STAR certification. Certification and capacity answer different questions: a certified model meets the program’s efficiency criteria, while capacity tells you how much it is designed to hold. Both should be part of the decision.
Consider the drying setting’s energy trade-off
Heated drying can use more energy than allowing dishes to air-dry or using a non-heated setting. If a model lets you disable heated dry, compare the convenience of faster, drier unloading with the additional energy shown on the label or in the manual. The Department of Energy’s purchasing guidance explains the role of efficiency when selecting residential dishwashers: Purchasing Energy-Efficient Residential Dishwashers.
Noise, controls and everyday usability
Noise information matters when the dishwasher runs near a living area, home office or bedroom. Consumer Reports includes noise and ease of use in its evaluation areas. Look for a published noise rating where available, but also consider the cycle selected: a heavy cycle may sound or run differently from a quiet or overnight program.

- Can you select a cycle and options without repeatedly pressing an unclear sequence?
- Is the remaining-time display visible from the room where you need it?
- Does the machine remember or clearly show options such as heated dry, delayed start or sanitizing?
- Can you add an item safely, and does the door-opening dry feature conflict with cabinetry or a countertop overhang?
Interior lighting, a third rack and a status indicator can improve convenience, but they should not displace cleaning, drying, fit or efficiency evidence in your priorities.
Where rinse aid fits
Rinse aid helps water sheet off dishes and can reduce spotting. Consumer Reports discusses its drying benefit in If You Want Drier Dishes, Use Dishwasher Rinse Aid, published February 20, 2024.
Treat it as an aid, not a substitute for a capable dishwasher. If a model leaves plastic containers wet or performs poorly in independent testing, adding rinse aid will not turn it into a different drying system. Follow the dispenser instructions, adjust the dosage only as the manual allows, and check whether your water hardness or detergent choice affects spotting.

How to read test results and marketing claims
Independent testing is most useful when you understand what was measured. Consumer Reports’ dishwasher evaluations include cleaning, drying, noise and ease of use, while its test method examines ceramic, glass and plasticware after a wash-and-dry cycle. Look for results that describe the complete cycle rather than a brief demonstration, and note whether the score separates washing from drying.
Do not treat a single adjective such as “premium,” “crystal dry” or “steam” as a standardized performance claim. Two machines can use similar terminology yet produce different results. Give priority to the model number tested, the cycle and options used, and whether plastics were part of the load. A result from a different model in the same product family may not transfer if the racks, controls or drying system changed.
When no independent score is available, compare the manual’s cycle descriptions, drying choices and EnergyGuide label, then treat the purchase as less certain. Ask whether the retailer’s return policy and installation terms cover the exact model; do not assume that a favorable description replaces a measured result.
Match cycle choices to the loads you actually wash
Automatic sensing is designed to adapt to soil, but different loads still benefit from different settings. A light or shortened cycle may suit lightly used dishes, while baked-on cookware calls for the heavy option if the model provides one. Delicate-item, sanitizing or other specialized settings can matter when your household regularly needs them, but their presence alone does not prove superior cleaning or drying.

Calculate value beyond the sticker price
The purchase decision includes the appliance price, installation, expected energy use and the convenience of the results. EnergyGuide’s annual figure lets you compare operating estimates, but it does not include every ownership expense or reflect your utility rate. Heated-dry use, cycle frequency and options such as delayed start can change actual consumption.
Also consider recurring rinse-aid use and the value of unloading dishes that are acceptably dry. Paying more for a feature is sensible only when the tested cleaning, drying, capacity or usability improvement matches your priorities. No universal best model follows from feature names alone, and current prices, stock and service coverage must be checked for the exact model and location.
Questions to ask before ordering
- What is the exact model number, and are the independent wash and dry results for that same model?
- Does the automatic cycle explicitly use a soil sensor, and which light, normal and heavy cycles remain available?
- Can heated dry or automatic door opening be turned off, and where does the door stop when open?
- What are the required water, electrical and drainage connections, and which parts are included?
- Will the racks hold your tallest glass, largest plate and common plastic containers without blocking spray arms?
- What warranty applies, and is local service available for this model?
How to compare two suitable models step by step
- Confirm physical compatibility. Measure the opening and compare it with the exact installation dimensions, door clearance and connection requirements.
- Verify the automatic cycle. Look for explicit soil-sensor language in the specification or manual. Record the normal, heavy and light-cycle alternatives.
- Collect independent results. Use wash and dry scores from a credible testing source. Give special weight to plasticware results and note the test conditions.
- Identify the drying method. Record whether heated dry, residual heat, a fan or automatic door opening is used, and whether each option can be switched off.
- Check the loading pattern. Compare adjustable racks, tine spacing, third-rack clearance, cutlery storage and the largest items you routinely wash.
- Compare efficiency like for like. Read each EnergyGuide label and note estimated annual energy use and cost. Check ENERGY STAR status.
- Evaluate noise and controls. Compare published noise information, cycle choices, display clarity and delayed-start or status features.
- Review ownership details. Confirm the current warranty, installation instructions, included parts and local availability for the exact model number.
- Choose on evidence, not labels. If one model has a more impressive drying name but weaker plastic results, prefer the measured outcome that matches your household.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming “automatic” means fully automatic in every respect
A soil sensor can adjust a cycle, but it does not decide how to load the racks, whether a pan needs a heavy cycle or whether delicate items should be separated. Confirm the sensor and retain manual choices.

Heated dry tends to improve dryness in Consumer Reports testing, yet the publication explicitly says it is not a guarantee. Check model-level results and expect plastics to be the hardest items.
Comparing only advertised capacity
Two dishwashers with the same category rating can accommodate different combinations of plates, pans and tall glasses. Study rack geometry and measure your problem items.
Using an annual-cost number without its conditions
EnergyGuide costs are estimates based on standardized assumptions. Keep the stated estimate with the model and compare similar sizes and configurations.
Ignoring installation and service constraints
Dimensions, water and electrical connections, door clearance, warranty terms and local service determine whether a technically attractive machine can actually be installed and maintained. Verify these details before purchase.

Bottom line for an automatic wash-and-dry dishwasher
Buy the dishwasher that combines a verified soil sensor with strong independent cleaning and drying results, particularly on plastic. Then make sure its racks fit your cookware, its capacity suits the household, its EnergyGuide figures are competitive and its noise and controls work in your space. Heated drying, automatic door opening and rinse aid can improve the experience, but measured model performance—not the feature name—is the deciding evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I look for in a good dishwasher?
Start with a genuine soil-sensor automatic cycle, then compare independent cleaning and drying results, especially on plasticware. Confirm that the racks fit your dishes, the capacity suits your household, the EnergyGuide estimate is competitive with similar models, and the noise and controls suit your room.
What kinds of automatic wash and drying features are available?
Automatic wash normally refers to soil sensing that adjusts operation as water becomes cleaner. Drying may use electrically heated or power dry, residual heat or condensation, a fan, or automatic door opening. These terms describe methods, not guaranteed results, so check model-level testing.
How do I know if a dishwasher is energy-efficient?
Read the yellow EnergyGuide label for estimated energy use and annual operating cost, comparing similar capacities and configurations. Check ENERGY STAR certification separately. Your utility rates, cycle frequency and use of heated dry mean the label is an estimate rather than a personal bill forecast.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Are heated-dry dishwashers always better?
Consumer Reports testers generally find heated-dry cycles leave dishes drier than residual-heat systems, but they explicitly say this is not guaranteed. Plastics remain difficult. Compare independent drying results and confirm whether heated dry can be disabled when you want to reduce energy use.
Does automatic door opening dry dishes completely?
Opening the door near the end of the cycle releases steam and can be effective, according to Consumer Reports. It is not a promise that every item will be dry. Check results for the exact model, make sure cabinetry allows the door to open, and pay attention to plasticware.
Can rinse aid fix a dishwasher that leaves dishes wet?
Rinse aid helps water sheet off dishes and can reduce spotting, but it cannot compensate for weak machine performance. Use it according to the dispenser instructions and still compare independent drying results, particularly for plastic containers and lids.
Should I buy a standard or compact dishwasher?
ENERGY STAR defines standard capacity as more than eight place settings and six serving pieces, and compact as less than eight place settings and six serving pieces. Choose based on your household and opening, then verify the exact model’s rack layout because category capacity does not predict every pan or bowl fit.
What should I verify before installation?
Measure the opening’s width, height and depth and check door clearance, flooring, trim, plumbing, electrical connections and installation type. Confirm included parts, warranty, local service and current availability for the exact model number before scheduling delivery.
