Start with the Android apps you actually need. Confirm the exact Chromebook model offers Google Play, check that each essential app is available and usable on it, then compare the device’s input features, display, memory, storage, network needs and remaining software support. Play Store access alone does not guarantee that a particular app will work.
Can Chromebooks run Android apps?
Some can. Google’s Chromebook Help says Google Play is available only on some Chromebooks. Support can also be blocked by a work or school administrator, so check both the model and any management restrictions before buying.

If you can inspect the device, open Settings → Apps → Manage Google Play preferences. If that setting is absent, Google says the Chromebook does not work with Android apps. For a purchase made remotely, verify Play Store support for the exact model rather than relying on a broad product-family name.

Will your essential Android apps work?
A Chromebook may support Google Play while a specific app remains unavailable or behaves differently. Developers can limit an app by device, screen size, Android version or location; an app may also need hardware such as GPS. Compatibility can change over time. Google explains these limits in its app compatibility guidance and Chromebook download troubleshooting page.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
- List your must-have apps. Include the apps you rely on, not only the ones you might try.
- Check each app on the target Chromebook. If possible, use its Play Store listing on the device. For a model you cannot inspect, ask the app developer whether that exact Chromebook is supported.
- Check the requirements behind the listing. Confirm any needed Android version, display characteristics, GPS or other hardware, and whether the app expects touch or stylus input.
- Check how it behaves in practice if you can. Google notes that Android apps can behave differently on Chromebooks. A listing alone may not answer whether the app’s layout and controls suit your intended use.
Match the Chromebook’s hardware and controls to the apps
Choose hardware around the apps you intend to run. Google’s guidance for deploying Android apps on Chromebooks identifies touchscreens, styluses, auto-rotation, particular resolutions and minimum memory as possible app-specific considerations. These are not universal requirements: check what your apps need.
- Input: A touchscreen helps only if your apps benefit from touch. Check stylus compatibility if an app depends on pen input; Google says USI styluses work only with USI-capable Chromebooks. See Google’s Chromebook peripheral information.
- Display: Compare screen size and resolution with the app’s needs, and check whether it requires auto-rotation. A phone-oriented layout may not make good use of every Chromebook screen.
- Memory and storage: Google’s managed-deployment guidance says, “Generally, we recommend that you deploy Android apps to devices that have at least 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage.” This is a recommendation for deploying apps in managed settings, not a guarantee of consumer performance or a universal minimum for every app. Check app-specific demands and leave room for local data.
- Network: Some apps require a continuous internet connection. If you need offline use, check whether the app supports it; installed apps also use device storage.
Check the update policy before choosing an older Chromebook
Google’s deployment guidance says all Chromebooks launched after 2019 support Android apps. That general statement does not replace checking the exact model’s current support policy or whether its Play Store access is restricted.

- Storage: 16GB Flash Memory
- OS: Chrome OS
- Screen Size: 11.6"
Some eligible pre-2021 Chromebooks may offer extended updates. Google’s extended updates support information says opting in removes Android apps and the Google Play Store. Declining keeps them in place, but app developers may eventually stop supporting the older software. Before choosing an older model, verify its Auto Update policy and the terms of any extended-update option; consider whether keeping Android apps matters more than opting in.
