Can you play The Outlast Trials solo?
Yes. PlayStation says players can take on trials alone or in teams, and Epic lists solo play as well as parties of two, three, or four. The game is built around cooperative PvE, but solo is an officially supported way to play—not an unofficial workaround.

Red Barrels has also addressed solo-player difficulty over time. In developer notes, the studio acknowledged feedback that difficulty rose after the tutorial and documented solo-specific changes, including Respawn Pills and a three-chance system. Those notes show that solo play has received design attention, but they are historical patch information—not a guarantee that every current trial or mode is balanced identically. Check the current in-game details if a specific trial feels different.

Solo: control your own pace
Alone, you can decide when to move, hide, explore, or take a risk without waiting for a group or coordinating a plan. That makes solo a natural fit if you prefer an independent, focused horror experience. It does not mean the game promises an easier run: there is no cited comparative success-rate data establishing that solo is easier or harder overall.

Co-op: share the pressure and coordinate
Co-op is the better fit if you want company during the horror and enjoy communicating with teammates. Red Barrels describes the game as cooperative PvE for up to four players; its game director, Alex Charbonneau, wrote that players “participate in experiments that push their psyches to the absolute limit.” Playing with others creates the opportunity to coordinate, but teammates do not automatically make a trial easier.
How difficulty and mode rules affect the choice
Check the trial’s current difficulty options
A July 19, 2024 Steam announcement listed Introductory, Standard, Intense, and Psychosurgery difficulties for Program Genesis, Weekly Therapies, and Special Therapies. These labels apply to the named programs in that announcement; they should not be assumed to describe every mode or the current version. Review the Trial Details screen before starting, since patches may change what is available.

Invasion has separate party and scaling rules
Invasion is a distinct case: the official announcement says it supports solo play or groups of two, three, or four, and that difficulty scales with the number of Invasion matches played. Do not assume that this match-based scaling rule applies to other Trials.

Platform and online requirements
Access details depend on platform and may vary by territory or change. PlayStation’s listing covers PS4 and PS5, requires online play, and lists up to four online players. Xbox lists online co-op for two to four, cross-platform co-op, and a qualifying Game Pass subscription requirement for console online multiplayer. Check your platform’s current listing for regional requirements and subscription terms before you plan a session.
