Choose exercise walking shoes by fit and how they feel while you walk: look for a secure heel, enough room for your toes, and cushioning and stability that suit your feet and route. Try both shoes in your usual walking socks, walk around in them, and do not expect a tight pair to become comfortable after a break-in period.
How should walking shoes fit?
Fit is the first test. Cleveland Clinic podiatrist Joy Rowland puts it simply: “The shoe needs to be comfortable, and it needs to fit well.” A shoe that pinches, rubs, crowds your toes, or lets your foot slide is a poor choice, even if it looks supportive or has features you like.

- Shop later in the day, when feet may be larger than they were in the morning.
- Wear the socks you normally use for exercise or walking; moisture-wicking walking socks can help keep feet dry, according to the Royal College of Podiatry.
- Try on both shoes and walk around. Check that the heel stays secure without rubbing, and that the shoe does not pinch or compress your toes.
- Check width and depth as well as length. Your toes need room, and the shoe should hold your foot without letting it slide.
Do not buy a tight pair on the assumption that it will stretch into a good fit. Cleveland Clinic physical therapist Michele Dierkes says, “You shouldn’t feel the need to break your new shoes in.” If you use an orthotic or need an unusual width, confirm that the shoe accommodates it; ask for professional fitting help if needed.

Cushioning under the heel and forefoot
Walking shoes should absorb shock under the heel and, especially, the ball of the foot. Cleveland Clinic reported in 2025 that walking can place force of about 1.5 times body weight on the feet; that figure explains why shock absorption matters, but it does not prescribe a particular cushioning level or shoe type.

Choose an amount of cushioning that feels comfortable to you rather than assuming that more is always better. Try shoes by walking in them: the cushioning should feel supportive, not awkward or unstable.
Stability and a secure heel
A firm heel counter and stability features can help control excessive foot movement. Assess stability alongside flexibility and comfort as you walk. The stiffest shoe is not automatically the right one, and arch type alone is not enough to determine the best shoe for every person.

Weight and breathability
A lighter shoe can be more comfortable over a walk, while breathable materials may help in the conditions you expect to use it. Consider both alongside fit and support; neither can compensate for a shoe that slips or crowds your foot.

Should you choose walking shoes, running shoes, or cross-trainers?
Walking and running shoes are designed around different activity demands. For walking, orthopedic guidance emphasizes low weight and shock absorption beneath the heel and ball of the foot. Running or cross-training shoes may also be options for walking, but no cited source establishes one category as universally superior.

Compare candidates on the same practical points: intended activity, immediate comfort, heel security, toe-box fit, cushioning under the heel and forefoot, stability, weight, breathability, and the route you walk. If more than one type suits the activity and fits well, let comfort decide. Cleveland Clinic podiatrist Joy Rowland notes, “A shoe store can fit you according to the exercise you’re going to be doing.”
How should your route affect your choice?
The Royal College of Podiatry identifies trainers as suitable for urban areas and pathways and advises choosing comfortable footwear suited to the terrain. For routes beyond those settings, choose footwear for the activity and surface rather than assuming that an urban trainer is appropriate for every condition. The cited guidance does not establish detailed specifications for every terrain or weather condition.

When should you get professional advice?
If your feet persistently hurt during exercise, Cleveland Clinic advises seeing a podiatrist. Its newer guidance also recommends a physical therapist when pain limits walking. A shoe-shopping guide cannot diagnose the cause of pain, so do not treat a particular shoe feature as a guaranteed way to prevent injury.
