Here’s what each supports—and what to check before inviting everyone.

Best for a group: Brawlhalla
Brawlhalla is the clearest choice when several friends want to play together. Developer Blue Mammoth Games describes it as a free 2D platform fighting game for up to eight local or online players, with cross-play across PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android. The Epic Games Store listing also identifies local and online competition, private rooms, casual free-for-alls, and ranked matches.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesExpect a platform fighter rather than a traditional one-on-one fighting game: the emphasis is on brawling and knocking opponents off the stage, making it a natural fit for a casual group session. The base game is free, though the storefront notes that in-app purchases may be offered.

Best for teamwork: 2XKO
2XKO is a free-to-play 2v2 tag-team fighter. One person can control both champions, or two friends can pair up, making it the best format match here if you want to coordinate as a team instead of competing in a group free-for-all. Riot’s page describes character-tag and assist mechanics, as well as ranked play.
The official page lists PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. It does not confirm cross-play, so don’t assume friends on different platforms can join the same match; check the current lobby and platform details first.

Best low-friction browser option: Tough Love Arena
Tough Love Arena offers a free browser game that friends can access by sharing a link. Its Steam listing describes six characters, simple inputs, beginner-friendly play, browser crossplay, rollback netcode, and controller and mobile support. That makes it a convenient option for trying a small fighter without downloading a full game.
The free browser version and the Steam edition are different offerings: the Steam version is paid in at least some regions and includes extras such as offline play and event skins. The listing’s mention of rollback is a feature description, not evidence that its netcode is better than another game’s.

How to choose a free fighting game with cross-play or local multiplayer
- Decide where everyone is playing. For friends on the same couch or a larger online group, Brawlhalla explicitly supports local and online play for up to eight. For a duo seeking a team fighter, consider 2XKO. For a quick browser match, try Tough Love Arena.
- Check everyone’s platform. Brawlhalla’s official site expressly confirms cross-play across its listed platforms. Tough Love Arena’s Steam listing says its browser game supports browser crossplay. Riot’s cited 2XKO page lists platforms but does not verify cross-play.
- Pick the kind of fighting you want. Brawlhalla is a party-oriented platform fighter; 2XKO is a 2v2 tag fighter; Tough Love Arena is a compact, beginner-oriented fighter with simple inputs.
- Confirm setup details before scheduling. The published pages cited here do not establish whether online console subscriptions, accounts, or separate devices are required for every region and platform. Check the game’s current multiplayer instructions and your platform’s requirements.
Do you need a controller?
No controller is established as a general requirement. Tough Love Arena’s Steam listing explicitly mentions controller support, along with mobile support. A gamepad may be useful for local Brawlhalla play, but check compatibility with your platform and the game before buying one; no specific controller model or universal compatibility is established.
