Choose the MacBook Air if you need a complete computer you can carry between rooms or locations: its screen, keyboard, trackpad and battery are built in. Choose the Mac mini if you mainly work at one desk, already have peripherals, or want a desktop with broader external-display support. The right fit depends less on a blanket performance verdict than on where you work, what equipment you own and how you want your displays arranged.

Which Mac fits the way you work?
Choose MacBook Air for portability and an all-in-one setup
The Air’s built-in screen makes it usable without first arranging a desk. Apple lists a 13.6-inch display for the 13-inch model and a 15.3-inch display for the 15-inch model, both at 500 nits. Its built-in battery and keyboard and trackpad also make it a practical choice for moving between rooms or working away from home. You can connect an external display when you want a larger or additional screen.
Apple states “Up to 18 hours video streaming” and “Up to 15 hours wireless web” for the listed Air models. These are Apple estimates under its test conditions, not a promise of the runtime every person will get; actual battery life varies with use and settings. Choose Mac mini for a permanent desk
The mini is a desktop, not a ready-to-use laptop. Apple lists the computer and a power cord as its in-box contents, so you need a compatible display and input devices unless you already have them. That can make it a natural fit if your desk is already equipped, but it changes the cost calculation if you are starting from scratch.
Apple lists front USB-C ports and a headphone jack, plus rear HDMI, Ethernet and Thunderbolt ports on the base M6 model. The M5 Pro configuration is listed with Thunderbolt 5 ports. This mix can suit a desk with wired networking, HDMI and several connected devices; check the ports on the exact configuration and your peripherals, since adapters or a hub may still be needed. Apple also lists Ethernet configurable to 10Gb Ethernet, an option rather than a feature to assume is enabled on every unit. See Apple’s Mac mini technical specifications.

How to compare displays and connections
Both computers support external displays, but the maximum count is not the only compatibility question. Apple lists the reviewed Air as supporting up to two external displays while also using its built-in screen. For the base Mac mini configuration shown, Apple lists up to three external displays; the M5 Pro has different limits. Resolution and refresh-rate support depend on the specific chip and display combination, so check Apple’s specifications for the configuration you intend to buy and compare them with your monitors.
- For a portable single-screen workspace: The Air’s own display works wherever you take it.
- For a multi-monitor desk: The mini is the more natural desktop option, but verify the display count, resolution and refresh rate for its exact configuration.
- For a desk with wired accessories: Compare the ports on the specific Mac with your monitor, network connection and other devices; port counts alone do not guarantee that every setup connects without adapters.
Compare the full setup, not just the computer
Before choosing, list what you already own and what you would need to buy. With a Mac mini, include a monitor and keyboard and mouse or other input devices if you lack compatible ones. With a MacBook Air, include any external monitor, dock or adapters you want for desk use. Apple’s retrieved product pages did not provide static usable prices, so there is no verified current price comparison here; use local prices for the computer and the equipment needed to complete your setup.

- Check the selected Mac’s ports and display limits against your intended monitor arrangement.
- Compare the local price of each computer plus any equipment you still need.
Which one should you choose?
Pick MacBook Air if portability and a self-contained computer matter most. Pick Mac mini if you work mainly at one desk, already have peripherals, or want to build a workstation around external displays. If you are undecided, the most useful question is whether you want the computer to arrive with its own screen and input devices, or prefer to choose and connect your own desk equipment.
