Choose an office chair by how well its adjustments fit your body, desk and work—not by an “ergonomic” label. Start with seat height and depth, lower-back support, seat width and armrests. Then try the chair at your usual workstation if possible. Your feet should be supported, your thighs comfortably supported without pressure behind the knees, and the chair should let you reach the desk and change posture without restriction.
What makes an office chair ergonomic?
An ergonomic chair is one that suits the person using it, the workstation and the tasks being done. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) puts the point plainly: “A chair becomes ergonomic only when it specifically suits a worker’s size (body dimensions), their particular workstation, and the tasks that must be performed there.” The practical consequence is that no feature list or product label can guarantee a good fit for everyone.

That fit is about how the chair works as part of the whole setup. A chair might have several adjustments and still be unsuitable if its seat is too deep for you, its lowest height leaves your feet unsupported, or its armrests prevent you from sitting close enough to your desk. Consider the adjustments as a way to make the chair fit your body and work—not as a scorecard in which more settings automatically mean better ergonomics.
Which chair features should you prioritize?
| Feature | What to check | A mismatch may look like |
|---|---|---|
| Seat height | Can you adjust the chair to a workable desk position while keeping your feet supported by the floor or a footrest? | Your feet are unsupported at the height needed to work at the desk. |
| Seat depth | When you sit back against the backrest, does the seat support your thighs without pressing behind your knees? | The seat edge presses against the backs of your knees, or the seat is too deep to sit back comfortably. |
| Seat width and shape | Does the seat feel comfortable and leave room to change posture? | The seat feels restrictive or does not support you comfortably. |
| Backrest and lower-back support | Can you position the backrest to support your lower back without uncomfortable pressure or restricted movement? | The support does not meet your lower back, creates pressure points or makes normal movement difficult. |
| Armrests | Can they support your arms without lifting your shoulders or interfering with your approach to the desk? | They push you away from the work surface, get in the way, or leave your shoulders raised. |
| Base, casters and controls | Is the chair stable, are its casters suitable for your floor, and can you operate the controls easily? | The chair does not move or stay put as your task requires, or its adjustments are difficult to use. |
Seat height: check your feet and desk together
Seat height is not just a matter of whether the chair feels high or low. Check whether you can sit at a workable height for the desk while keeping your feet fully supported by the floor or a footrest. If the desk requires a chair height at which your feet do not reach the floor, assess a footrest and the work surface together rather than accepting unsupported feet as the trade-off.

CCOHS offers a rough rule of thumb that an optimal seat height is about one-quarter of a person’s body height. It is not a fitting formula: torso-to-leg proportions vary, and the guidance itself warns against treating the estimate as universal. Use the chair’s adjustment range and your own fit at the workstation as the deciding checks.
Seat depth: support your thighs without knee pressure
Sit back against the backrest and notice where the front edge of the seat meets your legs. The seat should support your thighs without pressing against the backs of your knees. A chair can have an adjustable seat height yet still fail this check if its seat pan is too long or short for you. If you cannot sit back and get comfortable thigh support at the same time, the seat depth is not working for your body.

Seat width, shape and surface
Check whether the seat supports you comfortably and allows you to shift among normal working postures. Comfort is individual, so assess it while sitting as you would during your actual tasks rather than judging the cushion from a quick glance. CCOHS also notes the value of a comfortable, breathable surface, while recognizing that settings such as healthcare or laboratories may have different surface needs.

Backrest and lower-back adjustment
The backrest should be positionable so it supports your lower back without creating uncomfortable pressure points or restricting movement. Look at whether the support reaches the right area for you and whether you can use the chair naturally while working. A feature described as lumbar support is useful only if you can position it comfortably; its presence alone does not establish a good fit.

- High-Resilience Molded Foam Seat – Won’t Flatten After 1 Year – Instead of budget foam that hardens and sags within months, the seat is built with high-density, high-resilience molded foam that bounces back day after day. It maintains its shape and cushioning far longer, preventing the “bottoming out” discomfort common at this price point
- Adjustable Lumbar, Not a Fixed Afterthought – Unlike flimsy plastic supports that crack or lose tension, this chair features a durable lumbar mechanism that adjusts depth to match your spine’s natural curve. Genuinely relieves lower back pressure during long sitting sessions
- Breathable Mesh Backrest – No Peeling, No Heat Buildup – Say goodbye to flaking faux leather. The high-tension mesh back promotes continuous airflow, keeping you cool in warm environments and eliminating the mess of peeling upholstery. Mesh holds up significantly better over time and looks professional years later
- Anti-Sink BIFMA Certified Gas Cylinder – A common failure in budget chairs: the pneumatic cylinder loses pressure and slowly sinks during use. Our Class 3 BIFMA-certified gas lift is built to hold its height reliably, so your chair stays exactly where you set it—year after year. No more sudden drops or mid-work adjustments
- Heavy-Duty Metal Core Base (330 lbs Capacity) – Thin plastic bases can crack under stress, especially near the cylinder hub. We use a reinforced nylon base with a metal core, providing the durability and peace of mind you need. Smooth-rolling, 360° silent casters glide across hardwood, tile, or carpet without scratching or catching
Armrests and desk access
Armrests should support your arms without making you raise your shoulders. Just as importantly, they should not prevent you from getting close enough to the work surface or positioning the chair for the task. Adjustable armrests can help, but only if their range works with your desk and your normal working position. Test them while seated at the desk, not in isolation.
Base, wheels and controls
Check that the base feels stable, the casters suit the floor, and the chair behaves as you need it to in that setting. Depending on the work area, you may also need wheels that lock. Try the controls: you should be able to operate the adjustments you need. Consider maintenance as well. CCOHS identifies loosening hardware and hydraulic-cylinder problems as examples of wear concerns, and advises checking the manufacturer’s maintenance guidance and likely repair needs.

How should you try a chair before buying?
OSHA recommends trying different chairs; CCOHS recommends giving the primary user a chance to try a suitable chair in a real work situation. A showroom test or return-period trial is more informative when you recreate your actual setup instead of evaluating the chair alone. Use your usual desk and work position if possible, and try the tasks you expect to do in it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Set the chair at your workstation. Move it to the desk and arrange it for your normal work position. Sit back against the backrest.
- Adjust seat height. Find a height that works with the desk and keeps your feet fully supported by the floor or a footrest.
- Check seat depth. With your back against the backrest, confirm that the seat supports your thighs without pressing behind your knees.
- Position the backrest. Adjust it so your lower back is supported, then check that the support does not create pressure points or restrict your movement.
- Test the armrests at the desk. Check that they support your arms without lifting your shoulders or blocking access to the work surface.
- Use the controls and move normally. Try the adjustments and a range of ordinary working postures. Check stability, caster behavior and whether the chair suits the floor and task.
This is a practical fit check based on CCOHS and OSHA workplace guidance, not a clinical or individualized ergonomic assessment. If you cannot try the chair before purchase, compare its published dimensions and adjustment ranges with your needs, and confirm return terms directly with the seller.

How should you interpret published measurements?
Published dimensions can help narrow a shortlist, but they are guidance rather than universal guarantees. OSHA’s purchasing checklist gives example figures of a 15–22 inch seat-height adjustment range and a 15–17 inch seat-pan length. OSHA also cautions that its criteria may not accommodate all body types. These are checklist recommendations, not a universal fit standard or a promise that a chair in those ranges will suit you.
Compare the stated range with the actual fit checks: whether you can get supported feet at a workable desk height, sit back while keeping the seat edge clear of the backs of your knees, and position the backrest and armrests comfortably. Dimensions help you decide what to try; they do not replace trying the chair when that is possible.
What if the chair almost fits?
- Your feet are unsupported at the height you need: Consider a footrest, and assess it together with the desk and chair position. A footrest is an option when your feet cannot rest on the floor at the necessary chair height.
- The seat edge presses behind your knees: Recheck whether the seat depth can be adjusted. If you still cannot sit back against the backrest with thigh support and no pressure behind your knees, the chair may not fit you.
- The armrests keep you from reaching the desk: Adjust them if possible and retest your normal work position. If they still obstruct access or proper positioning, they are not working for your setup.
- The lower-back support feels uncomfortable: Reposition the backrest or its support if adjustable. If you cannot get support without pressure points or restricted movement, do not assume the label or feature name solves the mismatch.
- The chair moves poorly or is unstable: Check whether its casters suit the flooring and whether locking wheels are appropriate for the work setting. Verify stability and control operation before settling on it.
What else should you confirm before purchase?
Once a chair passes the fit checks, confirm details that affect whether you can use and maintain it as intended. Check the manufacturer’s care and maintenance guidance, likely repair needs, warranty and return terms, and the chair’s availability and dimensions directly with the seller or manufacturer. CCOHS notes that hardware can loosen and hydraulic cylinders can develop problems with wear, so maintenance is part of the ownership decision rather than an afterthought.
Do not rely on a generic dimension, a feature name or the word “ergonomic” to settle the decision. The strongest shortlist is made up of chairs whose adjustment ranges appear suitable and that you can verify at the desk, preferably by trying them in the work arrangement where they will be used.
