ARK Can’t Connect to Server: A Complete Troubleshooting Guide

ARK servers can be invisible or unreachable for very different reasons. Use this step-by-step guide to separate startup and browser delays from port forwarding, mod, firewall, Steam and CGNAT problems.

If ARK: Survival Evolved cannot connect to a server, first determine whether the server is actually ready, whether you are using the correct connection path, and whether mods or your local network are blocking the session. A server that has just started may need up to about 15 minutes before it registers in the browser. Once startup is confirmed, test a direct connection and a LAN connection before changing several settings at once.

This guide covers Steam-based ARK: Survival Evolved clients and self-hosted or rented servers. Port behavior can vary by build and hosting setup, so treat the port values below as troubleshooting leads to verify in the server log and current official documentation, not as universal guarantees.

Start with the symptom, not a random fix

Use the first matching row in this table, then follow the section linked by the suggested action. This prevents changing firewall, port and mod settings simultaneously and losing the clue that identifies the fault.

What you see Most useful first check What the result tells you
The server is absent from every browser Confirm the process finished startup, then wait for registration and the Steam master-list delay. If the console never confirms registration, investigate the server itself before your client.
The server appears, but joining ends in a timeout Retry while watching for mod downloads; then test open YOUR_IP:7777 from the in-game console. A direct connection separates browser discovery from the actual game connection.
Steam reports “app ID is invalid” Launch ARK first and join from its Favorites or Unofficial list. This is commonly described as a Steam client/browser fault rather than proof that the server is down.
Only a modded server fails Allow the mod download to finish, resubscribe to the server’s Workshop mods and verify game files. A mod version, incomplete download or corrupted file is more likely than a basic port fault.
LAN works but internet players cannot join Check forwarding, the public address and whether the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT). The server is functioning locally; the failure is on the internet path or router/ISP path.
No one can connect, including on the same network Check server startup, bind/address settings and the local firewall before changing router rules. A local server or host configuration problem is more likely than CGNAT.

1. Confirm that the server has finished starting

Allow the complete startup window

A 2026 hosting guide reports that an ARK server can take up to approximately 15 minutes from process start to appear in the browser. Do not treat an empty listing during the first few minutes as proof of failure. Keep the server console or hosting panel open and look for its registration or listening confirmation before troubleshooting the client.

Startup time can be longer when the machine is under load, the server is installing or updating content, or a mod is being prepared. The important checkpoint is a completed startup message in the console, not merely a process name in Task Manager or a panel showing “running.”

Account for master-list delay

Even after the server is ready, the Steam master server list may take a couple of minutes to show a newly started instance. Refreshing repeatedly during that interval can make a healthy server look intermittent. Wait for the console confirmation, allow the additional listing delay, and then search again.

Read the console before restarting

Record the last several lines of the server log before you stop it. Look for a registration message, a port-binding error, a mod download or load error, and any message that repeats while the process is running. A restart can clear a transient fault, but it also removes the evidence needed to distinguish startup, mod and network problems.

2. Check whether you are using the right port for the right job

ARK commonly uses separate ports for gameplay and server queries. A third-party hosting guide identifies 7777/UDP as the game port and 27015/UDP as the query port; the in-game and Steam server browsers use the query port. In that arrangement, forwarding only the game port can leave the server playable by direct address but invisible in the browser.

Port or port group Reported role How to use this information safely
7777/UDP Game traffic in the cited hosting guidance Use it as the first direct-connect and forwarding value, then confirm the server’s configured value.
27015/UDP Query traffic used for browser lookups in the cited guidance Check this when the server is running but absent from Steam or the in-game browser.
7778 Described by some guides as an additional or optional port Do not assume it is required; verify the server configuration and current documentation first.
TCP plus UDP combinations Suggested in some community discussions, with no consistent consensus Do not open broad ranges solely because a port checker reports “closed.” Test the actual game and query paths.

Why port advice conflicts

Community threads disagree about exactly which ports to open. One discussion says the answer is not consistent; other users report success with a port-and-port-plus-one setup, or with TCP and UDP rules for 27015 and 7777. These reports date in part from 2015–2017 and may describe older clients, server builds or hosting layouts. They are useful hypotheses, not a universal ARK networking specification.

3. Bypass the browser with a direct connection

Use the in-game console

  1. Launch ARK: Survival Evolved and enter the main menu or a game session where the console can be opened.
  2. Press Tab to open the console.
  3. Type open YOUR_IP:7777, replacing YOUR_IP with the server’s reachable address.
  4. Press Enter and wait for the connection attempt to complete.

This command is a troubleshooting test reported in a community thread. Replace the port if the server is configured to use a different game port. A successful direct connection proves that browser discovery was the problem; a failed direct connection points toward the server, route, firewall, address or mod state.

Use the correct address for the test

  • For players outside the host’s network, use the host’s public address, not its private address.
  • For a player on the same home network, test the host’s local address first.
  • Do not assume that a hostname, old saved favorite or dynamic public address still points to the current server.

If direct connection works but the browser does not list the server, focus on query-port configuration, registration and master-list delay rather than reinstalling the game.

4. Fix the “app ID is invalid” message

A guide describing this error attributes it to a Steam client bug and recommends avoiding the affected browser path. Start ARK first, open the game’s server browser, and join from the Favorites or Unofficial list. If you know the address, add or select the server in the in-game list and connect there instead of launching the join action from a Steam server-browser result.

This workaround does not prove that every “app ID is invalid” case has the same cause. If the in-game list is also empty, return to the startup, query-port and direct-connect checks. If only the external Steam browser fails, keep using the in-game path while checking for Steam client updates and corrupted game files.

5. Treat mod downloads and mismatches as a separate failure class

Give downloads time to finish

On a modded server, a connection timeout can actually be a slow Workshop download. Leave the connection attempt running long enough to establish whether content is still downloading, then retry if it fails. A timeout that occurs only on the first join, or only on a large mod collection, is more consistent with content transfer than with a closed game port.

Repair the client’s mod state

  1. Exit ARK completely.
  2. In Steam, open the Workshop page for each mod required by the server and unsubscribe, then resubscribe.
  3. Start Steam’s verification for ARK’s installed files.
  4. Restart Steam and ARK, then attempt the connection again.

Use the server’s current mod list, not a remembered list from an earlier wipe or map. A missing, partially downloaded or different mod version can prevent the session after the server has already been discovered.

Repair the server’s mod state

If every player fails at the same mod or the server console reports a mod load error, the administrator should stop the server, allow its configured mod update process to complete, and start it again while watching the console. Do not repeatedly restart while an update is still in progress; that can leave an incomplete installation and make the next timeout look like a network problem.

6. Remove local firewall, antivirus and VPN blockers

Allow the game and its processes

Security software can block ARK, Steam or the server process even when the router is configured correctly. Add the game and its related processes to the firewall’s allowed-app list, or create narrowly scoped rules for the required traffic. Apply the change to the network profile you are actually using, such as Private or Home, and avoid disabling protection permanently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Temporarily remove route-changing software

Disable a VPN or proxy for one controlled test. These services can change the apparent public address, introduce a different route or prevent local-network discovery. If the connection works only when the VPN is off, the result identifies a route or policy conflict; it does not mean the ARK server’s ports are wrong.

Restart the network path

Power-cycle the router and modem, wait for the internet connection to return, and retry the direct-connect test. This can clear a stale NAT mapping. If the public address changed after the restart, update any saved server entry and use the new address for testing.

Verify the game installation

Use Steam’s installed-file verification when the client has corrupted files, crashes while joining or behaves differently after an update. Verification does not repair a blocked port or a server-side mod mismatch, so combine it with the symptom-specific checks above rather than treating it as a universal fix.

7. Self-hosting: test forwarding and CGNAT methodically

Build the forwarding rule from the server’s actual configuration

  1. Give the host computer a stable local address, either through a router DHCP reservation or an equivalent method.
  2. Read the server configuration and console to identify the active game and query ports.
  3. Forward the required game and query traffic from the router to that local address.
  4. Allow the same traffic through the host operating system’s firewall.
  5. Restart the server, wait for full registration, and test from a device outside the home network.

Guides commonly list 7777, 7778 and the query port for self-hosting, but the community evidence is inconsistent about whether 7778 and TCP rules are required. Start with the values the server is actually configured to use and expand only when a documented requirement or a controlled test justifies it.

Recognize CGNAT

Carrier-grade NAT places multiple customers behind an ISP-controlled public address. In that situation, your router may show a private or nonmatching WAN address and inbound port forwarding will not reach the ARK host. If LAN connections work, your forwarding rules look correct, and outside players still cannot connect, ask the ISP whether the connection uses CGNAT and whether a public IPv4 address or another supported hosting option is available.

Do not rely on a generic port checker alone

A community reply explains that many port-checking websites report a port as open only when the destination application answers the scan. A running ARK server may therefore appear “closed” to a generic checker even though the relevant game path works, especially when the checker uses the wrong protocol or port. Validate with an actual external ARK connection and the server’s own logs.

8. Use a LAN test to isolate the fault

Test from the same network

  1. Connect a second device to the same router as the server.
  2. Use the server’s local IP and the configured game port in the direct-connect command.
  3. Attempt to join while the server console is visible.

If LAN joining succeeds, the ARK process, local firewall and basic game port are probably functioning. Concentrate on public addressing, router forwarding, ISP restrictions, CGNAT and VPN or proxy routing. If LAN joining fails, stay on the server and local network: check startup completion, the listening address, firewall rules, mod state and the port shown in the console.

Interpret mixed results

  • LAN succeeds; external direct connect fails: investigate the router and ISP path.
  • LAN and external direct connect succeed; browser fails: investigate query-port forwarding, registration and list delay.
  • Direct connect reaches a password or character screen, then fails: investigate mods, client files, server settings or session-specific errors rather than discovery.
  • No test reaches the server: capture the server log and verify that the process is listening on the intended interface and ports.

9. A clean recovery sequence for players

Run these actions in order, stopping as soon as the connection works:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Ask the administrator whether the server has completed startup and whether a restart or mod update is in progress.
  2. Wait through the reported startup window and the additional Steam list delay.
  3. Try the in-game Favorites or Unofficial list instead of an external Steam join action.
  4. If the browser is unreliable, test open YOUR_IP:7777 with the confirmed address and port.
  5. For a modded server, wait for downloads, resubscribe to its Workshop mods and verify ARK’s installed files.
  6. Allow ARK and Steam through the firewall and antivirus, then disable VPN or proxy software for one test.
  7. Restart the router and modem if the local route appears stale.
  8. Ask the administrator to perform a LAN test and to compare the configured game and query ports with the forwarding rules.

Keep a short record of each result: browser listed or not, direct command succeeded or failed, LAN succeeded or failed, and whether the server console logged an incoming attempt. That four-part record tells the administrator which side of the connection needs attention.

10. A clean recovery sequence for server administrators

  1. Leave the console open and wait for a complete startup and registration confirmation.
  2. Record the configured game port, query port and any additional port the server explicitly reports.
  3. Check that the host firewall permits the required traffic and that the router forwards it to the correct stable local IP.
  4. Test a local client over LAN.
  5. Test an external client by direct address, not only by the browser.
  6. Only after direct tests work, investigate why the query port or Steam master list is delayed or missing.
  7. If external tests fail while LAN works, check WAN addressing and CGNAT with the ISP.
  8. If modded clients fail, inspect the server console for mod download or load errors and let updates finish before restarting.

When asking a player to retry, change one variable at a time and note the exact time of the attempt. The console may show whether the request reached the server, which is more useful than a generic “timed out” message.

What not to conclude from a failed connection

  • An empty browser immediately after startup does not prove the server is offline.
  • A “closed” result from a generic port checker does not prove that ARK cannot receive traffic.
  • An “app ID is invalid” message does not by itself prove a bad server address.
  • A timeout on a modded server does not automatically mean the query port is blocked.
  • A list of ports copied from an old forum post is not a substitute for the server’s current configuration and logs.

When the evidence points beyond ARK

Escalate to the server host or ISP when the server reaches full startup, LAN joining works, direct external joining fails, and the router’s WAN address indicates CGNAT or does not match the public address. Escalate to the game host when the process never confirms registration, repeatedly fails to bind its configured ports, or logs a mod or installation error before accepting players. Provide the host with the server version, map, mod list, configured ports, startup log excerpt and the results of LAN and external tests.
