For PS4 gaming, prioritize a TV with a responsive Game Mode and check model-specific input-lag measurements. A 120 Hz TV is not a stated requirement for PS4. If you want HDR, confirm the set supports HDR10 on the HDMI input you plan to use; PlayStation’s setup also calls for a Premium HDMI cable, compatible content, and the required console settings.
Which TV features matter most for PS4 gaming?
Start with the features that affect your own setup, rather than a TV’s broad gaming claims. Compare the TV’s input lag in Game Mode at the PS4 output mode you intend to use, verify the native refresh rate and supported HDMI modes, and check HDR10 support on the specific HDMI port. Sony recommends its Game setting to reduce input lag, but that advice does not establish a universal millisecond target or rank one model against another. Sony’s guidance on reducing input lag is about enabling the setting, not measuring every TV.

- For responsiveness: look for independent measurements of the exact TV model in Game Mode at the resolution and refresh rate you will use.
- For refresh rate: check the panel’s native refresh rate and the input modes it accepts; do not treat “motion rate” branding as a substitute.
- For HDR: confirm HDR10 support and identify which HDMI input supports it.
How do you reduce input lag on a TV?
Input lag here means the delay contributed by the TV between receiving the console’s picture and displaying it. It is only one part of perceived response; controller, game, and network delays are separate. Turning on Game Mode is the first practical step. Sony recommends the Game setting for reducing input lag, while supported Samsung TVs may detect a PS4 and switch to Game Mode automatically; behavior depends on the model. Samsung’s Game Mode guidance describes that supported-model behavior.
- Open the TV’s picture or input settings for the HDMI port connected to the PS4.
- Enable the TV’s Game Mode or Game picture setting. Names and menus vary by manufacturer and model.
- Check whether the mode remains enabled for that input and whether any automatic switching is working as expected.
- If responsiveness is a major buying factor, compare independent input-lag measurements for the exact model in Game Mode at your PS4’s intended output mode.
Game Mode can reduce display-side processing, but no single lag figure applies to every TV and configuration. The cited manufacturer guidance does not provide a cross-model latency comparison, so avoid choosing on the strength of an unverified universal threshold.

Does PS4 need a 120 Hz TV?
No 120 Hz requirement is established for ordinary PS4 gaming by the cited guidance. A 60 Hz-class TV is a sensible baseline to consider, but check the output modes available from your particular console and the settings supported by the game you play. TV makers discuss 120 Hz and variable refresh rate (VRR) as gaming features generally; those labels alone do not show that a PS4 game can use them or that they improve its responsiveness. LG’s gaming TV guide discusses these features in the wider TV-gaming context, not as PS4 requirements.
A faster-refresh TV may still suit you if you also plan to connect other devices or a later console. Evaluate that as a separate use case: compare the TV’s native refresh rate and supported HDMI input modes rather than relying on a brand-specific motion label.

Does PS4 support HDR, and what do you need?
Yes. PlayStation says PS4 consoles support HDR video output for gameplay and streaming. Its stated setup requirements include an HDR-capable 2K or 4K television that supports HDR10, a Premium HDMI cable, HDR-enabled content, and PS4 system software version 7.0 or later. HDR is optional: a TV that supports SDR can still be used for games. See PlayStation’s PS4 HDR setup instructions for the full procedure.
PlayStation’s instructions say to connect the console directly to the TV for HDR. If you use a receiver or HDMI switch in between, that setup path may not work as described. Also confirm the exact HDMI port supports HDR; some TVs require you to enable an enhanced or UHD-color setting for that input.

Enable HDR on the PS4 and TV
- On the TV, identify an HDMI input that supports HDR and enable that input’s HDR mode if required. The setting name varies by brand.
- Connect the PS4 directly to that TV input with a Premium HDMI cable.
- On the PS4, open Settings > Sound and Screen > Video Output Settings.
- Set HDR and Deep Color Output to Automatic.
- Use a game or streaming program that supports HDR. The display and connection alone cannot make non-HDR content HDR.
- Check Video Output Information on the console to see whether HDR is supported, and use Adjust HDR for the console’s calibration instructions.
HDR compatibility is not the same as HDR picture quality. A TV’s HDR label does not, by itself, establish its brightness, contrast, or how convincing HDR will look; the cited PlayStation setup guidance addresses signal compatibility, not comparative display performance.

| What to compare | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Input lag | Model-specific measurements in Game Mode at your intended PS4 resolution and refresh rate. | Game Mode is recommended to reduce TV-side delay, but manufacturer setup advice does not establish a universal latency figure. |
| Refresh capability | Native panel refresh rate and supported modes on the HDMI input you will use. | A 120 Hz or VRR label does not establish a benefit or requirement for PS4. |
| HDR compatibility | HDR10 support, which HDMI port supports HDR, and the input setting needed to enable it. | PS4 HDR setup depends on a compatible TV input and settings. |
| Other devices | Whether your other consoles or sources can use higher refresh rates or VRR. | Those capabilities may matter for other equipment even when they are not the deciding PS4 feature. |
Quick buying checklist
- Prioritize a usable Game Mode and check measured input lag for the exact TV model if low latency is important.
- Do not pay extra for 120 Hz solely because you assume PS4 requires it; verify your console and game’s output modes.
- If you want HDR, confirm HDR10 support on the specific port, not just an HDR mention in the TV’s headline specifications.
- Check that the TV lets you enable Game Mode and HDR on the input you will use.
- For HDR setup, use a direct TV connection and the cable and console settings specified by PlayStation.
