Check the order status and messages on the retailer’s official site, then contact the retailer to ask what is holding the order and whether your payment was authorized or actually captured. A pending transaction on your bank statement may be a temporary authorization hold, not a completed payment. If the retailer cannot find the order or explain a posted charge, ask your payment provider or bank to investigate.
First, find out what “paid” means for this order
Card payments can involve two separate steps. An authorization reserves funds or credit; capture is the step that charges the customer. Shopify explains that an authorized payment can appear as a pending charge or hold, and that a merchant may review an order before capturing payment. WooCommerce likewise documents orders that remain “On hold” when a payment gateway authorized a payment but did not capture it. A payment notification or pending bank entry alone does not prove the merchant received a completed payment.

PayPal describes its own authorization status this way: “Your account will show a ‘Pending’ authorization until the merchant captures the payment.” The wording and process vary by retailer, payment method, and provider, so ask the merchant to check the transaction tied to your order.

- Open the retailer’s official order-status page. Confirm the order number, current status, and whether the page requests an action.
- Search the email address used at checkout for an order confirmation, payment or identity verification request, billing-detail issue, or backorder notice. Check spam or junk folders too.
- Look at your bank or payment app. Note whether the transaction is pending or posted/completed, and record the amount and approximate time.
Do not place a duplicate order or pay again until the retailer confirms what happened to the first transaction. A pending entry may later post or be reversed, and a second attempt could result in another transaction.

Ask the retailer specific questions
Use the support channel listed on the retailer’s official site. Give the representative your order number, checkout email, approximate payment time, and amount. Ask:
- Does the payment show as authorized, captured, or in another state?
- What specific reason is attached to the hold?
- Do you need billing, identity, or payment information from me?
- Is an item unavailable or backordered?
- When should I expect the next status update?
Do not send your full card number, security code, or other complete payment credentials by email or chat.

Match the next step to the transaction status
If the transaction is pending
A pending amount may be an authorization hold, including one from an unsuccessful payment attempt. Shopify says failed attempts often appear as pending and are usually reversed after a short period, but the timing depends on the bank. Ask the retailer whether it intends to capture the authorization, and ask your bank or payment service what status it sees.

If the transaction is posted but the retailer has no order
Contact the payment provider with the approximate transaction time and the account or order details it requests. Shopify’s troubleshooting guidance recommends contacting the payment provider when a posted charge has no matching order. If the provider cannot identify or explain the charge, contact your bank or card issuer through its official app or the number on your card.

If you do not recognize the charge
Contact your bank or card issuer promptly using an official channel and follow its process for reporting an unauthorized transaction.

- Authorization awaiting capture: the merchant may be reviewing the order before collecting payment, or its payment setup may authorize without automatically capturing.
- Payment or billing verification: a card authorization problem, billing-address mismatch, or order verification may require attention. Office Depot lists these among possible reasons for a held order.
- Inventory delay: Office Depot also identifies backorders as a possible cause, where processing waits for items to become available.
- Order/payment mismatch: the transaction may not have produced a complete order record. Check the retailer’s order page and ask the payment provider to trace a posted charge that the retailer cannot match.
These are examples, not a complete list. Retailers use different status labels and hold procedures; only the merchant can confirm the reason for a particular order.

How long can a pending charge or authorization last?
Published timeframes describe different situations and are not a universal order-processing deadline:

Shopify advises contacting Shopify Support if a charge remains more than five business days without an order and the bank cannot identify it. This guidance applies to the situations described by Shopify, not every merchant or payment.
- Shopify authorization holds: Shopify says a hold may remain on a customer’s statement for up to 30 days after the original authorization, even if payment was captured or the order was canceled. The bank and card issuer determine how long it appears; this is not an order-processing estimate.
- PayPal US authorizations: PayPal says orders and authorizations typically expire in 29 days, with exceptions and other authorization terms. This is PayPal-specific guidance, not a general card rule.
Ask your bank or payment provider about the status and expected release of a particular hold; no single timeframe can be promised for every transaction.
