For independent projects, open each project folder separately and use File > Open Recent to switch between them. When you regularly work across several related folders at once, add them to a saved multi-root workspace. Use a VS Code profile when you also need different editor settings, extensions, or layouts—not as a substitute for choosing which folders open together.
Choose separate folders or one multi-root workspace
In VS Code, a workspace is the set of folders open in a window plus configuration associated with them. Opening a single project folder already creates a workspace; a multi-root workspace combines multiple distinct folders in one window. VS Code’s use of “workspace” does not necessarily match the project or solution model used by a particular language or framework.
| Setup | Best for | How to switch or reopen |
|---|---|---|
| One folder per workspace | Independent projects that you normally handle separately | Choose the project under File > Open Recent. VS Code can restore that folder workspace’s open files and layout when it is reopened. |
| Saved multi-root workspace | Related folders you routinely use together, such as sibling repositories or code alongside its documentation | Open the saved .code-workspace file, select it under File > Open Recent, or use File > Open Workspace. |
If you are unsure, start with separate folders. Combine them only when having the roots visible and searchable in the same window improves a real workflow. VS Code workspace documentation explains the distinction between a folder workspace and a multi-root workspace.
Switch between independent projects with Open Recent
Keep each independent project in its own folder, then use File > Open Recent to return to one. This keeps each project’s folder context and workspace state separate instead of adding unrelated roots to a single window.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For multi-root workspaces, entries in the Recent list are labeled with a “(Workspace)” suffix. To end the current combined session, choose File > Close Workspace. An untitled, unsaved workspace belongs to its open VS Code instance, so VS Code may ask you to save it before closing.
Create and save a multi-root workspace
- Open a folder in VS Code, or start with the folder you want as the first root.
- Choose File > Add Folder to Workspace, then select another folder. You can repeat this for each root. Alternatively, drag folders into Explorer, select multiple folders in the native open dialog, or launch VS Code with multiple folder paths from the command line.
- Give the roots clear names if their directory names are ambiguous. A root’s optional
namein the workspace file controls its Explorer label. - Save the group as a workspace so you can reopen it later. Saving creates a
.code-workspacefile.
An unsaved group is an untitled workspace; save it if you want a durable, named way to reopen the same set of folders. For detailed supported ways to add folders, see Multi-root Workspaces.

Keep a shared workspace portable
A .code-workspace file lists roots in a folders array. Paths can be absolute or relative to the workspace file. Relative paths are useful when sharing or moving the workspace, provided the folder layout remains consistent. A folder entry can include a name to make the root easier to recognize in Explorer. The workspace file can also contain shared workspace settings and extension recommendations.
Open the saved file directly, choose File > Open Workspace, or select its Recent entry to restore the group. VS Code documents workspace-file structure and reopening options in its multi-root workspace guide.

Keep workspace settings separate from editor profiles
Use workspace configuration for choices tied to the folders you are working on, such as project settings, tasks, or launch configurations. For a single-folder workspace, these are stored in the project’s .vscode folder; for a saved multi-root workspace, they can be stored in the .code-workspace file. Workspace settings override user settings, and individual roots in a multi-root workspace can also have folder-level settings. The scope depends on the setting: resource settings can apply per root, while editor-wide settings apply at workspace level rather than being independently set for each root. See User and workspace settings for the scope distinctions.
Use a profile for a different set of VS Code customizations—such as user settings, extensions, or UI layout. Profiles can be associated with folders or workspaces, so opening one can activate its associated profile. The command line also supports launching a folder or workspace with --profile; syntax and options are documented in the VS Code CLI reference. A profile does not change which folders are included in a workspace. For profile behavior and association details, see Profiles in Visual Studio Code.

Navigate roots and account for limitations
Search and identify files across roots
Explorer shows each root in a multi-root workspace. Global search includes the roots and groups results by folder; to narrow search to one root, use an include pattern such as ./folder-name/. If files in different roots have the same name, VS Code can include the root folder in editor tab labels. The workbench.editor.labelFormat setting can display folder or path information to help distinguish them. These multi-root behaviors are described in the official guide.
Check extension support
Some extensions may not fully support multi-root workspaces and may work only with the first folder. If a tool appears to ignore other roots, check that extension’s support before reorganizing the workspace around it.

Review trust prompts before combining folders
When you add a folder to a trusted multi-root workspace, VS Code may ask whether you trust its files. Declining can put the entire workspace in Restricted Mode. Review the folder and its contents before granting trust; see Workspace Trust for how trust affects VS Code features.
