The lightest way to monitor a store depends on whether you control it. For your own store, subscribe to change events instead of repeatedly checking the catalog. For public pages on another merchant’s site, use an authorized feed or integration if available; otherwise, make a small number of targeted requests, reuse HTTP cache validators, and back off when the site signals a limit.

If you control the store, subscribe to events
Polling means asking for product or inventory data on a schedule whether or not anything changed. Shopify’s app guidance puts the alternative plainly: “Instead of polling for changes, your app subscribes to them.” Webhooks notify an app about subscribed changes, reducing the need for routine catalog reads. Subscribe only to changes you need
For Shopify, the documented webhook topics include variants/in_stock and variants/out_of_stock. The out-of-stock trigger is a variant’s inventory changing from at least one to zero or less. Subscribe only to the product and variant changes needed for the fields you track; unrelated topics add processing work without improving those alerts. Process deliveries reliably and avoid duplicate work
Record the last observed price and availability for each monitored item, and make event handling idempotent: receiving the same change more than once should not create duplicate alerts or trigger unnecessary catalog reads. Distinguish a variant from a whole product
Shopify’s stock topics are variant-scoped. A variant becoming unavailable is not necessarily the same as the product being removed, and Shopify’s documented availability trigger is specific to the online channel. Fetch only missing details
When an event payload does not contain the fields your integration needs, retrieve only the affected product or variant rather than rereading the entire catalog. Shopify notes that certain product webhook payloads contain full details for only the first 100 variants and include a variant_gids list for larger cases. Treat that as a payload constraint, not a reason to poll all products. Shopify: Webhooks

If you monitor another store, keep checks targeted and conditional
Prefer a permissioned source
Start with a merchant-provided feed, API, alert, or other authorized integration. If none is available and the site permits automated checks, monitor only specific product URLs and the fields needed for the alert. Avoid broad catalog enumeration and fetching page assets that are irrelevant to price or availability.

Check the site’s crawler directions in robots.txt and its applicable terms. RFC 9309 says these rules “are not a form of access authorization”: robots.txt communicates crawler instructions, but it does not grant permission or replace access controls. Crawlers following the protocol should use parseable rules. RFC 9309 also says a cached robots.txt generally should not be used for more than 24 hours unless the file is unreachable. Reuse the server’s validators
If a response includes an ETag, save it and send it on the next request as If-None-Match. If it includes Last-Modified, send that value as If-Modified-Since. A not-modified response lets the client validate its stored representation without downloading the same page body again. Conditional requests can reduce transfer work, but they still reach the server, and the actual load depends on the site and implementation. IETF RFC 7232: HTTP Conditional Requests
Set a cautious schedule and respond to limits
There is no universal safe polling interval established by these standards. Choose a frequency based on the site’s instructions, the freshness you need, and how the site responds; spread requests over time instead of sending synchronized bursts. An HTTP 429 response means too many requests were sent in a given period. Pause, and if the response includes Retry-After, wait for the specified HTTP date or number of seconds before trying again. For other transient errors, conservative backoff is a prudent implementation choice. If the site blocks automated access, stop or seek authorization rather than trying to evade the restriction. Build a monitor around the signal, not repeated full-page reads
- Define the fields. Decide whether you need price, variant availability, product-level status, or only a subset of these.
- Use the strongest permitted source. For a store you control, use the relevant event subscription. For another merchant, prefer a provided feed or authorized integration; use page checks only where allowed.
- Keep a baseline. Store the latest value and time observed for each item so you can compare changes and suppress duplicate notifications.
- Minimize retrieval. On webhook payload gaps, fetch only the affected item. For pages, request only the product URLs you need and use conditional validators when available.
- Throttle and recover. Stagger scheduled checks, honor crawler directions and Retry-After, and back off on transient failures. Stop if automated access is blocked.
