Choose a premium electric guitar by how well it fits and plays for you—not by its price, finish, or brand name alone. Check the neck, fretwork, string feel, tuning stability, balance, and upper-fret access in person; then compare the exact model’s pickups, controls, bridge, construction, included case, setup, and purchase terms.
Start with fit and playability
Specifications help narrow a shortlist, but they cannot tell you whether a neck or body will feel comfortable in your hands. Try the guitar in the position you normally play: seated, standing, or both. Notice whether the neck shape suits your grip, whether the body stays balanced on a strap, and whether you can reach the upper frets without straining.

- Neck and fretting: Move up and down the neck and notice whether its profile and fret spacing feel natural. Check the fret ends along both edges of the fingerboard for roughness.
- Bends and clean notes: Play bends at different positions and listen for notes that buzz, choke out, or lose sustain unexpectedly. A clean setup and even fretwork matter more in use than decorative appointments.
- Tuning and hardware: Tune the guitar, play normally, and check whether it remains in tune. Operate the bridge and tuning hardware as you would during a performance.
- Controls: Try every pickup-selector position and turn each knob. Check that the controls are accessible and that switching works as expected.
- Weight and balance: Pay attention to how the instrument feels over a full playing position, not just when you first lift it.
PRS’s 2026 Core buyer guide describes fretwork, neck shaping, final setup, and inspection as parts of its Core process. That is the manufacturer’s description of its own line, not independent evidence that every premium guitar receives the same treatment.
Compare scale length and string feel
Scale length is the distance from the nut to the bridge; it determines fret placement and contributes to how the strings feel under your fingers. PRS says shorter scales require less string tension to reach pitch than longer scales. Use that as a practical comparison, then try the guitar: string gauge, setup, and personal preference also shape the playing feel. Any broad tonal differences described by a manufacturer are guidance, not a guarantee that one scale will sound better.
#1 Best Overall
- Solidbody Electric Guitar with Alder Body
- 1 Single-coil Pickup
- Edge Tremolo - White
- 2 Humbucker Pickups
- Maple/Walnut Neck
For a concrete comparison, the official specifications list the PRS SE Custom 24 at 25 inches and the Gibson Les Paul Supreme at 24.75 inches. The difference is modest, but the instruments also differ in other respects, so scale length alone does not predict which will suit you.
Choose electronics for the sounds and controls you need
Compare the actual pickup types, selector positions, volume and tone controls, and any coil-split, coil-tap, phase, or bypass functions. Consider whether those options are useful with the styles and signal chain you actually use. A broad label such as “premium humbuckers” tells you less than the specific pickup and switching configuration.
Rank #2
- Fast, slim Maple neck
- Beautiful quilted Maple art grain top
- High output Infinity R pickups
The two official product listings illustrate how much implementations can vary. Gibson lists Burstbucker Pro humbuckers and push/pull controls for coil tap, phase, and bypass functions on the Les Paul Supreme. PRS lists 85/15 S pickups, a three-way blade selector, and a push/pull tone control on the SE Custom 24. These specifications describe available options; they do not establish a universal ranking of their sounds.
Verify the exact model and model year
Do not assume that every guitar in a brand family shares the same materials, finish, pickups, electronics, bridge, or manufacturing location. Check the specification page for the exact model and year, and confirm that the instrument being sold matches it.

PRS’s September 2026 specification FAQ says those details vary across its ranges. It states that Maryland-made models have used nitrocellulose lacquer beginning in 2023, while all SE models use acrylic urethane. It also says S2 models beginning in 2024 have Maryland-made pickups and electronics; earlier S2 models, including 2024 and prior-year instruments, may have S pickups and SE electronics. These examples make model-year verification particularly important when comparing a new guitar with a used or older one.
PRS’s Core guide also presents woods, fretwork, pickups, finish, setup, and hardware as design priorities for its Core range. Treat such statements as the manufacturer’s claims about its own products, and assess the individual guitar rather than taking a series name as a guarantee.

Check what the purchase includes
Before paying, confirm the included case or gig bag and ask what setup or inspection the seller provides. Gibson’s Les Paul Supreme listing says Gibson performs a final inspection and setup and includes a hardshell case; the PRS SE Custom 24 listing specifies a gig bag. These details should be verified on the listing for the exact guitar you are buying.
Return windows and warranty coverage depend on the seller and location. Read the terms that apply to your order before purchase, including how returns work if the instrument arrives with a problem or simply does not feel right.
