To reduce VR streaming lag, first work out whether the problem is limited to one game or affects every PC VR app. Then test the local network, reduce stream load, and inspect PC render and encode performance—one change at a time. There is no single bitrate, router, or setting that fixes every setup.
First identify where the stutter occurs
Before changing settings, note your headset, streaming app, game, PC specifications, and whether the PC connects to the router by Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Check whether the stutter appears only in one game, across multiple PC VR apps, or even in the headset interface. A problem confined to one title points toward a different area to investigate than stutter across all streamed apps; these symptoms alone do not identify a specific fault.

Change one variable at a time and retest the same scene or action. Otherwise, it is difficult to tell whether a change helped or simply shifted the symptom.

Check the local network and stream load
PC-to-headset VR streaming uses your local network; a fast internet plan by itself does not ensure a clean stream. Steam identifies competing wireless activity as a possible source of interference and recommends checking streaming bandwidth, quality, background programs, and router firmware. Steam’s streaming troubleshooting guide is the place to check its current menu labels and advice.

For Steam Link
Steam’s headset FAQ search result specifies a 5 GHz channel, Wi-Fi 5 minimum, Steam and SteamVR installed on the PC, and the headset and host PC on the same network. The FAQ page body was not readable when checked, so confirm the live Steam Link FAQ before relying on those requirements as current.
If practical, connect the PC to the router with Ethernet while keeping the headset on the local wireless network. This removes the PC’s Wi-Fi link from the path, but it cannot fix a PC render or encode bottleneck, or a problem in the headset’s decoding.

Reduce contention and tune Steam Link gradually
- Pause large downloads, file transfers, and other wireless video or music streams during a test. Steam lists competing activity as a possible source of trouble.
- Check whether the router or modem has a firmware update, as Steam recommends.
- Set Steam Link streaming quality to Fast as a test, then check whether the symptom changes.
- Start with low streaming bandwidth and increase it until problems appear; return to the last setting that worked. Choose Automatic to restore the default bandwidth behavior.
That gradual bandwidth advice is for Steam Link, not a universal bitrate prescription for Air Link or Virtual Desktop. A setting that works on one network and headset may not suit another.

Steam names MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner Statistics, Razer Synapse, ASUS AI Suite, ZoneAlarm, Skype or Skypehost, cloud-sync tools, and screen-capture software among programs that have caused issues for some users. Treat them as candidates, not proven causes: close or pause one at a time, then retest. Also check whether other software is using the PC for video, music, or large file transfers.

For Meta Link and Air Link, inspect the performance HUD
Meta’s Oculus Debug Tool documentation describes performance views for latency timing, app rendering, compositor rendering, asynchronous spacewarp (ASW), Link details, and network guardian information. Use the relevant view to see which part of the pipeline changes when the stutter occurs. Meta says to run the tool from the installed Meta Horizon directory so its version matches the distribution; the page was updated September 28, 2026.
Avoid changing several encoder options at once. Meta warns that high encode bitrate can cause instability, and that a larger dynamic bitrate offset can make lags and stalls more visible. If you adjust a setting, record its original value and retest before making another change.

Understand what Air Link Framerate Insurance can—and cannot—do
Meta’s March 15, 2022 article describes Air Link Framerate Insurance (AFI) as an experimental mitigation for some short bursts of late frames during wireless degradation. It may smooth resulting visual artifacts, but the article says it may stop applying when multiple frames in a row are dropped. AFI is not a repair for a persistently poor connection.

The article’s original requirements were Quest 2, PC and Quest software v38 or later, and USB Link or Air Link. At release, AFI was disabled by default, and 120 Hz was unsupported. Because these directions are from an older experimental-feature article, check Meta’s AFI documentation for current availability before looking for a setting or relying on those version details.

Decide whether a network upgrade is justified
Consider an Ethernet cable for the PC-to-router connection when testing suggests the PC’s wireless hop is a limitation. Consider a router or access point only after checking your current network, placement, headset compatibility, and competing traffic. Steam’s cited minimum for its headset app is Wi-Fi 5 on 5 GHz; the available guidance does not establish that Wi-Fi 6 is necessary or that buying a router will eliminate stutter.
Neither Ethernet nor a new access point addresses every part of the streaming chain. If the problem persists across network changes, use the app-specific diagnostics and check PC rendering and encoding rather than assuming the router is at fault.
Use a symptom-led next test

No comparative benchmark establishes that Air Link, Steam Link, or another route is categorically fastest. The useful choice is the route that works with your headset and gives you enough controls and diagnostics to isolate the problem.
