When comparing electric guitars, judge the individual instrument’s playability and workmanship, pickup sounds and controls, and hardware fit for your tuning and technique. Confirm the exact model and production year, then play the guitar if you can: a spec sheet describes components, but it cannot tell you how that particular instrument feels or whether its setup suits you.
What should I look for when comparing electric guitars?
Compare guitars in three separate passes: first how they feel and are put together, then whether their electronics cover the sounds you need, and finally whether their tuning and bridge hardware match how you play. This keeps a prestigious wood name or familiar pickup label from substituting for the practical questions: Is it comfortable? Does it work reliably now? Can it produce useful sounds for your music?

Use this checklist when you have two or more instruments to assess:

How do you assess build quality and playability?
Check comfort and workmanship separately
Hold the guitar in playing position, both seated and standing. Notice whether the neck feels comfortable, the body balances, and your hand can reach the frets you use. Run your hand carefully along the fretboard edges for sharp fret ends. Play notes across the neck and bend strings to check for choking, unexpected dead notes, or buzz that remains after ordinary setup needs are considered.

Inspect the finish and the neck-to-body area for visible assembly problems. Turn each control and test the output jack; they should not feel loose or produce crackling during normal operation. A single buzz does not automatically mean poor construction: it can come from setup, a string, or loose hardware. Identify where it occurs and whether it persists across notes or playing conditions.
Do not mistake setup for construction
String height, neck relief, pickup height, and intonation can often be adjusted. High action may make a guitar harder to play, but it does not by itself prove a defective neck; similarly, low action is not proof of superior workmanship. Fender’s factory setup guidance covers relief, string height, pickup height, control functions, and rattles or buzzing. Fender explicitly calls its figures minimum specifications intended as guidance, not hard-and-fast rules. A player’s attack and preferences matter, so treat reference measurements as a starting point rather than a universal target.

Construction terminology is not a quality ranking. PRS says its S2 scarf construction and manufacturing sequence are intended to produce a durable, comfortable, playable neck while using less raw material and enabling a more efficient process. That description explains the company’s approach; it does not establish that a given guitar is better made than one using a different neck joint. Judge the instrument in front of you.

How should you compare pickups and electronics?
Match the sound and controls to your needs
Compare pickup type, location, output and general voicing, then consider the switching options and control layout. Single-coil pickups tend toward bright, crisp tones, but that is a general tendency, not a guarantee of the sound you will hear. Yamaha explains that a pickup converts string vibration into an electrical signal—“When a metal string is plucked and vibrates, it generates a current.”—and notes that pickup type, controls, strings, technique, and other design factors influence the signal. Use a controlled listening comparison
- Set up each guitar through the same amplifier, with the same settings and, as far as possible, the same playing approach.
- Play each pickup position using familiar chords and single-note phrases; listen for attack, output, noise, and whether the sound is useful for your playing.
- Test the volume and tone controls, pickup selector, and any coil split or other alternate switching. Check whether the options are easy to operate and meaningfully expand the usable sounds.
- If you can, repeat with the amp or recording setup you expect to use. A sound that appeals through one rig may not be the one you want in another.
No pickup type is universally best. Prioritize the sounds and switching you will actually use, rather than assuming a component name guarantees a particular result.
Which hardware details matter?
Check the nut, tuning machines, bridge and saddles, and tremolo system where fitted. Tuners should turn consistently. When tuning, listen and feel for strings binding at the nut; binding can interfere with stable tuning. The bridge should allow the setup and intonation you need. If you want to use a tremolo, consider whether its operation and maintenance suit your playing habits. A fixed bridge and a tremolo offer different tradeoffs, not a universal better choice.

Component specifications are useful for identifying what is installed, but they are not independent proof of long-term reliability. For example, the manufacturer’s Epiphone SG Standard specification page lists Grover Rotomatic tuners, a Graph Tech nut, a fully adjustable LockTone Tune-O-Matic bridge, and a Stop Bar tailpiece. The page’s displayed Pelham Blue configuration is marked no longer available, so it serves as an example of how to read a specification, not a claim that this version can currently be bought.
Why confirm the exact model and production year?
A series name alone may not identify the parts fitted to a guitar. PRS says S2 models produced beginning in 2024 use Maryland-made pickups and electronics; earlier S2 examples may have “S” pickups and SE electronics. PRS also notes that some model parts are interchangeable and others are not, and that finishes and parts can differ by model and production year. Check the PRS guitar specification guidance and S2 and Bolt-on series information, or contact the manufacturer with the guitar’s serial number when the installed specification is uncertain.

For a model-spec example, Gibson’s Epiphone SG Standard page describes a set mahogany neck, laurel fretboard, 22 medium-jumbo frets, ProBucker 2 neck and ProBucker 3 bridge pickups, Grover tuners, a Graph Tech nut, a Tune-O-Matic bridge, and a Stop Bar tailpiece. Those are the specifications of the configuration described on that page, not a promise that every SG Standard year or version has the same parts.
How do you make the final choice?
First eliminate guitars with problems that matter to you, such as uncomfortable necks, persistent playability issues, or controls that do not work correctly. Among the remaining options, choose the instrument that feels right, provides useful sounds, and has hardware appropriate for your tuning and technique. If you cannot play the exact guitar before buying, confirm the precise year and configuration, and check the seller’s return policy and setup support. A specification sheet helps narrow the field; it cannot replace an assessment of the particular instrument.
