Before switching to Visible, check your exact phone’s IMEI with Visible’s Compatibility Checker and confirm the phone is unlocked. An eSIM option in your settings only shows that the phone may support eSIM; it does not prove Visible will accept it. If you want to keep your number, prepare the old carrier’s transfer details and leave the old service active until the transfer finishes.
Check the phone before you start
There are three separate questions to answer: does the phone support the SIM type you want to use, does Visible accept that exact device, and is the phone unlocked? Passing one check does not guarantee the others.

1. Look for eSIM support in the phone settings
Visible’s Help Center lists these places to look:

- iPhone: Settings > Cellular.
- Samsung: Settings > Connections > SIM card manager.
- Google: Network & Internet, then eSIM Cards.
Android menu names can differ by model and software version, so use these paths as navigation clues. Seeing an eSIM setting indicates a capability to investigate, not Visible compatibility.

2. Check the exact device IMEI with Visible
Run the phone’s IMEI through Visible’s Compatibility Checker before beginning activation. Visible describes an IMEI as a 15-digit identifier; dialing *#06# can display it. Some phones show more than one IMEI, so use the identifier requested by Visible’s checker and activation flow. Visible’s BYOD guidance says: “Always check your IMEI in the compatibility checker to be 100% sure your phone is BYOD compatible.”
3. Confirm the phone is unlocked
Visible says a device brought from another seller or carrier needs to be unlocked. A phone still being paid off may remain locked. Ask the current carrier whether the phone is eligible for unlocking and how to complete it; do not assume that an eSIM-capable phone is unlocked.

If Visible’s checker does not approve the device, resolve any lock or eligibility issue with the current carrier, use a compatible phone, or consider another device. If buying a replacement, check that exact model’s IMEI with Visible before purchase; eSIM support by itself is not proof it will work.

The practical difference established by Visible’s instructions is how the SIM is obtained and installed. Choose based on what your exact phone supports, the checker result, and whether app-based eSIM setup or a physical SIM better suits you. The available guidance does not establish that choosing eSIM rather than a physical SIM changes Visible’s network service.

Prepare for activation
Visible recommends doing the following before opening the activation flow:
- Install the current Visible app and update the phone’s software.
- Charge the phone and connect it to Wi-Fi.
- Be somewhere with Visible coverage.
- Back up the phone before moving service to a different device.
Activate an eSIM in the Visible app
- On the phone that will receive service, sign in to the Visible app.
- Choose whether the eSIM will be installed on the current phone or a new phone.
- Enter the complete IMEI requested by the app and complete the checklist.
- Verify your account, then follow the on-screen prompts to add and set up the eSIM. The iPhone and Android screens differ, so follow the instructions shown for your device.
- On Android, make sure the downloaded Visible eSIM is enabled and mobile data is on. On iPhone, follow the cellular-plan and default-line prompts.
- If app activation fails, follow Visible’s recovery instructions. The help flow may offer QR-code activation; Android users who cannot display the QR code on a second device can follow the manual-code instructions provided there.
- When setup finishes, check that calls, messages, and mobile data work.
Visible says eSIM activation or transfer often takes up to 15 minutes, but it may take longer. This is Visible’s procedural estimate, not a guarantee that every activation will finish within that time.

Keep your number: prepare the port separately
Downloading an eSIM and transferring a phone number are separate parts of switching. Visible lets customers request a number transfer during account creation or after activating with a new number. Before submitting a port request, check that your number is portable and gather the information the old carrier requires. Visible lists these details:
- The phone number to transfer.
- The old carrier’s account number.
- The port-out or transfer PIN.
- The service ZIP code.
Carrier requirements can differ, so confirm the exact account and PIN details with the previous carrier. Keep the old line active while the transfer is in progress; Visible says the previous account is terminated when the number transfer completes. Do not cancel the old service manually beforehand.

Visible says a port request can take from one hour to ten days, depending on the previous carrier. That is Visible’s estimate, not an independently measured average. Monitor Visible’s Port Tracker or wait for its completion notification, then verify that the new service works.
How to decide whether you need another phone
If your current phone is unlocked and Visible’s checker approves its exact IMEI, the checks described here do not establish a need to replace it. If the checker rejects it, first ask the current carrier about unlocking or eligibility. If the device still cannot be used, consider a compatible phone and verify its IMEI with Visible before buying; a family name or eSIM feature alone is not enough.
Visible guidance and device-specific differences
These steps reflect Visible Help Center guidance for US activation, BYOD compatibility, and number porting. Its iPhone eSIM page was last updated September 16, 2026, and its Android eSIM page September 21, 2026. The BYOD overview was last updated July 30, 2025, and the IMEI guidance September 17, 2024. App screens, supported device variants, and carrier port requirements can change, so follow the current on-screen instructions and confirm details with your existing carrier.
