Choose what to include in the download
Request all available categories if you want a broad personal archive. If you only need photos, posts, or information from a particular period, select the relevant categories and date ranges to keep the request focused. Facebook confirms these scope controls, but its cited Help Center guidance does not provide a complete current list of categories or establish every file-format, media-quality, processing-time, or archive-expiration option. Check the choices shown in your account rather than relying on a specific format or turnaround time.
Download versus transfer: choose the right action
| Option | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Download your information | Creates a copy of Facebook information for you to download. | You want to keep a copy for yourself, such as an archive of photos and posts. |
| Transfer a copy | Sends a copy of photos, videos, posts, or other information to another service. | You want to move a copy to another service rather than download it for local keeping. |
Both actions are in the account-information area, but their destinations differ. Choose the download option for a copy you will keep; choose transfer when the intended destination is another service.

Download your information before deleting Facebook
If you plan to permanently delete your account, request and download the information you want first. Meta’s permanent account deletion guidance says that after deletion you cannot retrieve content you added to the account, including photos and posts. Treat the downloaded copy as your chance to retain that material before proceeding with deletion.

Once downloaded, store the archive somewhere you can access independently of Facebook. A local drive or other storage you already use may be suitable; Facebook does not require a particular storage device. If the archive matters, consider keeping an additional copy in a separate location.
