A carrier phone deal is worth it only if the phone, required service plan, upfront charges, trade-in, and credits together cost less than a realistic alternative over the same period. A low advertised monthly payment is not the total price: credits may depend on a particular plan or line, arrive over time, and stop if you leave or change service.
Compare costs over the same period
Choose the time horizon you actually expect to keep the phone and service. If a promotion spreads credits over 36 months, calculate the full 36-month cost and also what you would owe or forfeit if you leave earlier. Use the same phone configuration and comparable service needs for every option.

Subtract only credits you qualify for and reasonably expect to receive during that period. Include the cost of any plan requirement rather than treating it as free.

Check what you must do to get the advertised credits
“Up to” and “as low as” describe conditional offers, not guaranteed discounts for every customer. Verify the exact phone, qualifying trade-in model and condition, financing agreement, plan, account status, and any new-line or port-in requirement in the promotion’s terms.
AT&T
AT&T’s offers page describes promotions using 36 monthly bill credits and qualifying installment agreements. Examples can require specific unlimited plans, trade-in thresholds, or a new line. The page says device tax on the full retail price is due at sale and lists an activation or upgrade fee. AT&T’s iPhone 18 Pro trade-in offer is advertised as low as $0 per month after credits, subject to an eligible plan and trade-in, a 36-month, 0% APR installment agreement, and tax on the full price at sale. That is a conditional net monthly amount, not a phone with no cost or obligations.

T-Mobile
T-Mobile’s promotion page shows offers that may depend on qualifying credit and service, a plan meeting a stated monthly threshold, and sometimes a new line and port-in. The page says tax on the pre-credit price is due at sale and a device connection charge may be due. These requirements vary by offer; read the complete terms for the promotion you intend to use.
Work out when credits arrive and what can stop them
Bill credits are commonly spread across an installment term rather than deducted from the purchase price immediately. An older AT&T offer’s legal terms illustrate one timing pattern: credits could begin within three bills after trade-in completion and then be applied in equal amounts over the installment term. That example explains possible timing; it does not establish current credit amounts or eligibility.

Read the exact offer for what happens if you change plans, cancel the line or account, or pay off the phone early. AT&T warns that lowering the plan can stop or reduce credits and that cancelling wireless service stops credits while making the remaining device balance due. T-Mobile warns that cancelling before all credits arrive stops them and leaves the remaining balance on the required finance agreement due; some offers also end credits after early payoff. These are offer-specific conditions, so confirm the terms before checkout.

Service bills can also include location-dependent items. Verizon’s customer agreement explains that service address can determine taxes, governmental charges, and Verizon surcharges, and distinguishes its surcharges from taxes. Use your own address and account details when estimating monthly charges; a headline plan price may not capture every bill add-on.

Use this checkout checklist
- Match the comparison: Write down the exact phone configuration, service needs, and period you expect to keep both phone and line.
- Read the promotion: Confirm the qualifying plan, trade-in model and condition, financing term, credit amount and timing, and any new-line or port-in requirement.
- Calculate upfront cost: Add the device tax basis, activation or connection charges, and any other amount due at sale.
- Calculate ongoing cost: Add required plan payments and device installments; subtract only credits you qualify for and expect to earn within your comparison period.
- Price the alternative: Add the cost of your current or preferred service to an unlocked phone’s purchase price over the same period.
- Check exit scenarios: Find out whether changing plans, cancelling service, or paying off early affects credits or makes a remaining device balance due. Ask the carrier to confirm the selected promotion’s terms before checkout.
